Did You Know Alice Walker Was A Lesbian?

I didn't. Apparently the author of The Color Purple had an affair with singer Tracy Chapman back in the mid 1990's. Anyway, I was trolling my favorite message board and came across this nugget about Alice and her daughter Rebecca.

That was ALL OVER Brooklyn when the affair was going on. When Alice Walker and Tracy Chapman broke up (it was ugly) Tracy pulled her money out of her (Alice's) daughter Rebecca's cyber cafe and got the marshals to come in and seize the equipment. Rebecca's girlfriend posted a letter on the front of the gated up establishment cursing Tracy Chapman out and outing her. It was a scandal. Here is a picture of Rebecca. PSSST.... according to the message board, lesbian Rebecca has had several abortions and felt unloved by her mom.

I knew Alice Walker was a lesbian. Well she isn't exactly a lesbian, she has been with men too, hence her daughter. The Tracy Chapman affair I didn't know about though. Not surprising at all.

Tracy Chapman always looked like a lesbo to me!

I knew about Alice too, but not the scandal with Tracy Chapman. I did read a couple of years ago that Rebecca is in a relationship with the female bass player M'shell Ndegocello and helping to raise M'shell's child.

So, the mother is gay and so is the daugher?

Well, that just proves that gay people turn thier gay.

Alice's sexuality is old news. Though I've never heard Tracy Chapman confirm she's a lesbian, we are certainly not surprised. That said, this is some juicy ass gossip!!!

Isn't she Oprah's BFF?

Her daughter is pretty.

I think everyone over 30 knew that Alice Walker was gay. Maybe not younger ones. She was very open about it. Terri McMillian's crazy ass was also openly Bi.

Anonymous said...

Back the f---up, Terry McMillian after all that BS with that jamaican man, has the nerve to be gay herself?

Anonymous said...

Stevie Wonder could see that she was gay. Come on now...

Anonymous said...

umm...yes. did you READ "The Color Purple"? instead of watch the watered down hollywood version of it?

Anonymous said...

Yes I did, and there was a lot of lesbo stuff in that. I actually read it before I saw the movie. Well it all makes sense now huh?

macc said...

Yes she has been openly lesbian for many years so it's a little surprising that there are those who didn't know when she has been so public about it. She even specified to her biographer the type of woman she is attracted to: young and masculine. But then I am/was totally unaware that Terri McMillan was openly bisexual. Can you site the source in which she came out.

well, duh i heard this shit about NINE YEARS AGO when it all happened. rebecca opened the first black cyber cafe in bk with backing from tracy chapman, who was her mother's girlfriend. tracy chapman and alice walker broke up, she demanded an immediate return on her investment, they had to close down. by the way, alice walker is BISEXUAL, not a lesbian, i ASSUME that tracy chapman is a lesbian, but she has never come out, so nobody can be sure. rebecca walker is also BISEXUAL, meaning she dates women and men. she had a long term relationship (not sure how long it was, maybe 7-10 years) with meshell ndegeocello, who is also bisexual, and they broke up in 2003. i've never heard about terry mcmillan being bi, but even if she is, why is it wrong for her to be angry about her husband REPEATEDLY and OPENLEY cheating on her? hello, she's a human being. to the ass who made the comment about gay parents turning children gay, obviously you don't KNOW any gay people so keep you ignorant (literally ignorant) comments to yourself. i'm a lesbian, who has straight parents. most people come from straight parents, and many, leaning towards most, gay people actually have straight kids. i also don't like the nature of this post. why is it necessary to discuss someone's sexuality like some salacious dirty secret? obviously its not if i heard about it a decade ago. about 10% of every population is gay, thats a given. more are bi or have experimented with the same sex. its part of society and part of the black community. EVERYONE knows someone gay, and if you don't think you know anyone gay, you're probably exuding an "denial is a river, ignorance is bliss" attitude. i wish people would grow up already.

Piss off Sloan.
Everybody ain't in the dyke inner sanctum and gay or straight, if you're a celeb and your mama's boyfriend/girlfriend shut down your shit, it's juicy. Get over yourself.
If you don't like gossip take your self-rightous ass elsewhere.

sloane said...

i meant to say most gay people come from straight parents.

sloane said...

first off, BOO, my name is sloane. sound it out, if that can help you spell it correctly. second, it's incredibly immature and bigoted to use a word like dyke when you mean to refer to lesbians. if you mean to come off like you're in juinior high, then good luck with life. third, the sexualities of most of these women have been common knowledge for years because they OPENLEY discussed it in interviews. fourth, i live in new york. many people frequented rebecca's cafe, and many people (as in straight, gay, white, black, purple not just the "dyke inner sanctum")knew WHY and HOW it got shut down. it was in newspapers too so people outside of ny could possibly know that rebecca's cafe was shut down by tracy chapman. that's why i think this story is late, and trying too hard to shock. why should it be a big deal to be gay (or bi), when it is so common? ask yourself that question.

Boo said...

SSSSSllllllooooooaaaaawhogivesafuck.Nine years ago most of us only had access to our local newspapers and tabloids for gossip and in case you ain't notice, they do not care about black people. With the Internet what's old is new, which should make you happy because you sound like an old bitter clam bumper without a clam to bump.

Boo said...

And whatever about that dyke comment Miss Sloane. Some of my best friends are dykes. Yeah I said it. and I call em that to their faces, and they call themselves that. You think it's like the word nigga, where you can only say it if you are one? Get out of here.

>>>SLOANE said...

i guess you do want to come across like a child. clam bumper? you win the award for the most juvenile junk i've ever heard in my life. and is the new york times a "local" newspaper? because last i heard it was a national publication and they did a story on the on the situation between rebecca walker and tracy chapman. maybe YOU only stuck to local news because your lazy ass couldn't be bothered to know what was going on elsewhere before the internet put on it on a platter for you. don't lump other people in with your provincial(look it up, read SOMETHING) views, lack of brainpower(or maybe a lack of intellect?), and initiative. just say that YOU(and only you) didn't know about anything that was going on outside of your BLOCK and leave it at that.

Boo said...

Nine years ago I was 11.

Needless to say, I wasn't reading the new york times yet. Unless it was in Right On magazine, I wasn't up on it.
Don't be so mad about what you perceive to be other people's shortcomings. Take that energy and dry hump your girlfriends leg. You need to cum real bad, release some of that tension.

Anonymous said...

OH PLEASE, nobody wants a straight person calling them a dyke, and if your "friends" sit there and let you call them that, then, lol, it explains why YOU are friends with them. anyway, i'm not your friend, and YOU DON'T KNOW ME, so its silly to think that if you call me or somebody else you don't know (as in not your "friends") a dyke they won't call you on that shit. by the way, i don't call myself or anyone else nigga, because i think its an ugly and simple word that will ALWAYS have the purpose of oversimplifying and stereotyping black people. you can be the ass using all the feebleminded, simpleminded, foolish, idiotic, imbecilic, moronic, ignorant, illiterate, lowbrow, uneducated epithets to characterize people if you want. i refuse to use that type of language, because I know it actually reflects on MY character to say words that have usually been used to subjugate and destroy the self-worth of people.

sloane said...

nine years ago I was 11...and i didn't use that as an excuse to not be engaged in the world around me. and if you were "only 11" how do you know what people were actually reading and what people knew. you obviously didn't, so i'll repeat what i said to another ass (like yourself), keep your ignorant comments to yourself. and like i said only children like yourself resort to cheap shots, like your jokes about my sexuality. you really don't know if i need to cum or not, but i certainly know for sure(from your stellar arguements) that you're not the sharpest knife in drawer. so i'm wasting my time talking to you. fuck off and go read something besides right on!

boo said...

I never called you a dyke So-alone. I refered to a dyke sanctum. I used nigga as an example, I didn't call you anything but a clam bumper and i thought that was pretty funny.
I'm bout to go fuck my girlfriend.
She's such a dyke.

sloane said...

1. you could have easily said "lesbian sanctum" but you didn't, you chose to use the offensive word dyke
2. you would think clam bumper is funny, kids laugh at anything
3. you didn't know whether or not i used the word nigga, if i found it offensive, or if i thought only black people should use it

in essence, you are operating on ignorance, your arguements suck, and you shouldn't have started with me. and honey, i'm not alone...i'm tired of this topic and you, so good night.

I come here because I like gossip, I could care less what color it comes in, but after reading some of these close minded comments, hmmmm...no wonder racisim, homophobia and ignorance is what makes Americans so ugly to others in the world. I'll get off my soap box and go to Perez were no one throws around racial slurs.

Perez? You gotta be fucking kidding me. Perez has the most racist comment around, unprovoked I might add. If you notice, white people start that shit on this board, don't get mad cause we finish it.

It was revealing to read all the comments before my post. It started out as a reaction to Alice Waler/Rebecca Walker/Tracy Chapman situation and quickly devolved into race baiting and insults. How did you all manage to get so far off topic?

Now, back to the beginning. I didn't know that Alice was bi-sexual or lesbian. As an artist, I thought she was sufficiently off center to be brilliant and weird. I like that about artists. I read her daughter's story and could understand why she felt neglected by her Mom and her father (let's not leave him out of this). The gossipy part about Tracy Chapman was great gossip and would be in the hetero world as well.

That said, let's all take a deep cleansing breath and kill the insults. They aren't needed.

FloridaGirl said...

Stop with all the nastiness and name calling. Does anyone remember why they came to this blog? The gossip, and yes, it is gossip and juicy at that, is about Alice and Tracy. Those of us not in the know are surprised is all. It's not a judgement of anyone's sexuality, just a surprise because we didn't catch the info before. Everything I have been reading after a Google search finds that Alice outed Tracy when Tracy had not specified her sexual preference. Perhaps that is a more fruitful discussion than slinging mud at each other. Everybody take a deep collective cleansing breath and let go the hostilities.

angela said...

...you better believe the first thing is a racial thing. They don't take the stories and reply on them. Its very much a black and white thing. And guess who start it? I mean if you don't care about the topic, don't post on it.

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha i think this is great. I am bisexual and have been open about it for many years. I don't know why people get so sensitive about stuff... lol. And to make it so bad, i am black white and puerto rican so i can't even really claim one race... lol. I make fun of everyone, gay straight bi, latino, white AND black. People need to chill and appreciate the little giggles in life. O yeah, i knew about alice a grip ago. peace.

this is why we as black people have the problems that we do. we need to rise to a higher standard. we have alwayse had to work harder than anyone else just to get over.the stereo types are still there that we are getto and violent; we as black women have bad credit; that we dont accept our own people dark skined verses light skinned gay or straight.we can just say to white people if you dont like whats on here get off but the truth is we still get hurt because the same stereo types are still perpuchated now by us. we need to love our gay sisters and brothers, we need to love us as a people. we need to be in college so that we can compete. i love my black sisters and brothers.just saying

I was just hoping that Tracy was married to some man and maybe had a family. I know she looked like maybe she don't like men but, I was hoping against hope. I don't want believe that gay is that popular. I see it but, wow, it is a bit much. Are you serious Alice Walker?

Gloria Adotevi said...

I wouldn't doubt it for a second....i watched the colour purple like 3tyms and its totally gay...i love Tracy Chapman though..great lyrics..

I had no idea Alice Walker is gay/bi-sexual until June 2013.

track4127 said...

I have this theory that MOST strictly gay/lesbian people are too ugly to get a straight person for a partner. But it may be different for bisexuals. Tracy Chapman appears to be quite pretty. Unfortunately she is probably bisexual

Anonymous said...

Alice Walker is bisexual and so is her daughter you monosexual moron.

Meshell Ndegeocello is bisexual too. I don't know how Tracy Chapman identifies.

If you think lesbians and bi women are the same thing you're wrong. A lot of lesbians don't want to know you if you admit you're bisexual.

Lesbian is a monosexual identity - just like straight and gay. Bisexual is a non-monosexual identity.

Mind you, you're probably so stupid that you think Barrack Obama is black even though his mother is white. So how can you be expected to understand?

Anonymous said...

I don't recall them using the words gay or lesbian in the 60's. They were called bulldykes, you cannot compare dyke to nigger. Nigger was always derogortory, for they were called colored/s then. .

Anonymous said...

Well " A lot of lesbians don't want to know you if you admit you're bisexual" that is because THEY ARE MAN HATERS!
