Troubled Former NBA Player Dies In Train Crash

Former Minnesota Timberwolf Eddie Griffin died last week when his SUV collided with a train. There was no identification in the truck and his body was so badly burned he had to be identified by dental records. Eddie ran into a gang of trouble in years past, ranging from being dropped from his team for failing drug tests, to crashing his car while, umm, pleasuring himself. Some suspect his driving into the oncoming train may have been suicide.

This was an accident. I met him before and he had a drinking problem.

I remeMber when the story broke here in Houston and they couldn't identify the body. I would have never imagined it was him!!!

RIP!!

An accident? I don't know about that, unless you think he was drunk and trying to beat the train. Because anytime a train is coming, the black and white bars come down across the tracks to block cars from crossing (He would have to have gone around the bars), red lights be flashing, plus trains are required to blow their whistles while crossing over streets. Not to mention trains are really loud.

this is really really sad. i hope it wasn't suicide, black men who kill themselves make me the saddest of all.

whatever the struggle, i hope he's in a better place.

Morgan @ 1:29pm.
If this wasn't an accident, Hell is the only place he would have ended up..

HE CLEARLY HAD ISSUES....im sorry but beating off in the car while driving and crashing drunk is a sign of something. maybe if he had an intervention or something it wouldnt have went as far as being hit by a train.

this is sad and god rest his soul and peace to his family.

@ morgan

He probably isn't. The greatest gift we've been given is life. To throw it away is inexcusable. To me. I hope that brother believed in reincarnation because if not he is fucked.

You're trying to tell me a rich Bball player couldn't get psychiatric help. Please.

C'mon now...You can get all the help you want and still not get rid of your issues

ya'lls God teaches you to think of someone and determine where he'll end up?

i think not.

MY God is love. Obviously this dude needed love (in a God-given way). Who am I to condemn him to hell?

...and don't even start w/ me about Jesus. Because what I believe he said was, 'Don't worry 'bout what aint cha business, It's mine to take care of anyway.'

So as woman with love in my heart--I'm going to wish him a beautiful journey to heaven...and leave it there.

boo...they really didn't know if the train lights were working properly but the gate was down.

When you are drunk...you are not thinking properly.

Just like when a cop is pulling someone over on the shoulder a drunk driver will side swipe the car. They are drawn to those types of things!!!

I would hope it was an accident!!!

Your words are very encouraging and I bet his family appreciates them.

I just met him and he was a very kind guy. He even helped my mom for 30 minutes inside of a local pool store and loaded our car for us about last Thursday. I was so suprised to hear this and wish him and his family the best. None of us are entitled to judge him b/c of his flaws, we don't know everything, only GOD does. May God be with Eddie and his family doing these very difficult times and I'm gonna be keeping him and his soul in my prayers.

RIP EDDIE- ONLY GOD CAN JUDGE YOU

2Thick4u, I too live in Houston. Infact I work very close to that accident location. I was shocked as hell when I found out it was him. SHOCKED.

But I do think it was a drunken suicide, even if it wasn't purely planned out. I know you've heard of addicts, especially alcoholics, being overly emotional and suicidal at the same time?

This made my heart sink. Eddie was like so many kids I know. They are dealing with a lot of issues already. Ask any teacher out there, kids today are a new breed. Dealing with some crazy shit. The pressure can be hard, especially if you're given a lot so young. In the end, you have so much more taken back from you. I just hate it had to end this way for him. Eddie, his family and friends are definately in my prayers.

Anon 2:59, it's not about whether he could afford counseling, maybe he did not want it. There is still a stigma in the AA community regarding psychiatric problems and intervention. Someone else mentioned that counseling is not foolproof. He could've been in counseling, we don't know. What we do know is that he was in a lot of pain and he felt there was no other answer but this, which makes it so, so sad.

I've seen people drive around the baracade many times at that location. This is usually in the broad day light and the train is like a hundred feet down the track. Me? When the gate down, fuck that! I ain't budging until it goes up.
