My baby was born in a pool at home with a doctor! not in some cold hospital bed with my legs straped up in the air! no drugs, just loved ones and my husband! no extra nurses and interns looking at my cooch! my other female friends have had the same luck! there is no proven data showing that babies born from home with the proper medical care and experienced health professionals your baby will be born fine! babies die in hospitals all day, I'm a nurse, I see it all the time.
My sister was born "at home" {by accident of course" and I witness the whole thing and my mother did have any medication. You hear of women giving birth all the time and they are nowhere near a hospital.
Drugs are nice but they certaintly aren't necessary to have baby. You could have that baby in a car/cab trying to get you to the emergency room.
someone choosing to not feel what is quite possibly the worst pain possible for a human to feel doesn't make them "ignorant." getting drugs doesn't mean you won't feel any pain. but what is the point of dealing with pain if you don't have to? my mom had me and both of my sisters and she had drugs and we're all grown and healthy. having a natural birth doesn't make you better than women that choose drugs. i chose them for my birth before and i'll do it again. for many years folks had their tonsils taken out without drugs. would you do that to?
no one is saying that mothers who give birth without drugs are better than those who use them. But you cannot compare taking out tonsils and root canals (man-made procedures) to giving birth. A vaginal delivery is not surgery (cutting into something that nature meant to stay intact). i was drugged during my first delivery and had complications due to the fact that i was not in my right mind (drugged). i said never again. but to each their own.
it should also be said that different women experience different degrees of pain. i was in labor for 33 hours and i was in so much pain that nurses from the hallway kept stopping to check in on me because i was screaming so loud. i've heard women say that childbirth didn't hurt that much. but either way, modern technology was used to make human the human condition more tolerable, whether it be for childbirth or surgery.
Women give birth with painkillers all the time. I'm not saying I'd want to experience it, because it would be like trying a pass a bowling ball out of my asshole. :X Ouch! Oh, the pain, the pain!

I wouldn't do it. I think it is way too risky, nurse or not. If the baby got stuck in the birth canal and the doctor had to do an emergency c-section or give you a blood transfusion, then what? It would take a minimum of 5-10 minutes for an ambulance to arrive, then mother and baby would be gone. Hospital births can be very comfortable and personal. You just have to choose the right hospital and get them to follow your birth plan. I had everything I wanted.
