^^^Cubans come in all shades from the lightest white to the blackest Black. All shades are considered Cuban and people there are very casual about color. Cubans in the U.S. are a different story. Most of the Cubans who fled when Castro came to power were wealthy, educated, and light skinned. The darker skinned Cubans in Cuba were largely left behind because they lacked the resources to flee the country. There's another reason why *some* African's don't particularly care for African-Americans: When large parts of Africa were occupied by Imperialist Europe, those of mixed race were given special privileges, that their Black African cousins were denied. Also, these mixed race Africans weren't considered Black - by neither the Europeans nor the Africans - they were considered "Coloured". All this nonsense was part of the "divide and conquer" strategy that the British came up with, and implemented everywhere they went. They did this to keep themselves in power even though they would be a minority in the places they occupied.
Now, since the vast majority of African-Americans are mixed - whether they even realize it or acknowledge it - to an African that lived under such apartheid systems, we would not be true Blacks, but Coloured. And, we would represent an oppressive system that they had suffered under.
Now, all that being said, I've, personally, never encountered an African, down here in New Zealand, that had a problem with me because I was born in America and am of mixed race. And, the majority of them I've met have been really nice people. However, I don't try to represent myself to them as a "brother". I know I'm not, and they know I'm not, so I see no need to put up some sort of facade simply because I share some physical characteristics with them. I just represent myself to them as someone who perhaps shares a distant relative and a few elements of culture - in other words, a distant cousin.

In terms of appearance, it's at the most diverse in the world, when in comes to the people of the African continent. This is understandable really, when one considers the fact that Africa is the birthplace of humankind.
Africans' complexions range from tan to blue-black; their heights from very short to very tall; their hair from very kinky to slightly wavy; their facial structures from very broad and thick to thin and aquiline.
The whites that say the things you have mentioned are uneducated about this as well. And, we all know what happens when one starts to lesson to stupid people: One becomes just as stupid as them.
P.S. While Obama does have a mother of European descent, his features are predominately African.

President Barack Obama is not a "first generation Kenyan." He is an American, specifically, an "African-American." President Obama "looks" Black. Culturally, he is closer to his American (including Hawaiian) roots. He is a person of mixed descent, but he LOOKS Black. Africans, especially Kenyans, who are trying to "claim" President Obama should take into consideration that his Kenyan biological father was more like a SPERM DONOR and DEADBEAT who abandoned President Obama's biological mother, Stanley. Also, let us take into consideration that persons on the continent of Africa include dark-skinned Blacks, light-skinned persons and Whites. However, because President Obama is a strong man (and a classy and diplomatic one at that) he apparently didn't hold any grudges and he embraced his Kenyan roots (despite his biological father's absence in his upbringing). However, President Obama's WHITE mother and his WHITE MATERNAL grandparents should get significant credit for raising the current President of the United States in a fairly stable, loving and supportive environment. President Obama's Kenyan father was not actively involved in the President's childhood and adulthood. Some whites want to conveniently disregard the "one drop" rule when they say that President Obama isn't really black. The KKK would consider President Obama to be a Black man by just looking at him.
Why can't all Black people just try to get along? If you are Black and carry yourself with dignity, who cares if you are from Africa, America, the Caribbean, Europe or Asia. Black people may be culturally different, but we share the same struggles.
I am paying attention to President Obama's latest speech in which he stressed the importance of an education and encouraged ALL Americans (including Blacks!!!!!!!!) to ensure they complete high school (or EARN a GED - don't just pay for that diploma) and then go on and get some higher education - community college, trade or vocational school, university and so on. Just make sure you do something meaningful so that you can be more marketable and won't have to blame anyone else if you are not successful. Each individidual is responsible for realizing their American dream. If you don't take heed to the President's words, you will just continue to live an American nightmare.
I am extremely proud of President Barack Obama. Keep in mind that there are many successful African-American individuals and families; however, the media prefers to bombard us with images and sounds of coonery and negativity in the Black community. There are good and bad elements in EVERY community, culture or subculture. There are plenty of examples Africans who are embarrassments to their continent.
