Last month we talked about Jennifer Hudson winning the role of Winnie Mandela in a new film about the former South African First Lady's life [click
here if you missed that]. And while that was all well and good for Jennifer, it was not so hot for South African actors. The Creative Workers Union of South Africa are threatening to sue for an injunction against the film unless a South African is cast in the title role.

Hollywierd will create whatever it wants, just like it always has. If they can't take the filming to South Africa, it will set up shop in Hollywierd or someplace else. If there's money to be made in Hollywierd, someone will find a way to make it.

Where we these people when Morgan Freedman got handed the Nelson Mandela role in that new movie with Matt Damon? Weren't they outraged about that either? I didn't think so!

2) Will anybody except Oprah and her "white guilt-let's see what the blacks are up to" fan-base give a fuck about this movie?
3) Shouldn't the Africans be more concerned that wack ass Jennifer Hudson is the best they could get.....wait...maybe that's why they want someone else.

The are not dumb. They know the movie needs Hollyweird star power as the lead for there to be any US or international interest.And they won't jepordise the movie being made in the RSA, when it can give jobs to local folks and local actors.
Just reserve enough roles and/or pay the right people enough money.
actually a lot of people ARE upset about morgan freeman playing nelson. his horrible "south african" accent is one of the main complaints. and i don't think jennifer hudson should get this role simply because she cannot act. (spare me the oscar talk, she got that b/c she sung the hell out of those songs. also, "monster's ball" is one of the worst films i've ever seen and halle got one for that, too) i find it interesting that we have gone to nitpicking about where a black actor hails from... i bet they mad about jill scott & no 1 detective agency, too?

When south africa get their own movies houses then they can talk, we got alot of african actors here and no one talks about them going home to make a movie. I loved Jennifers acting and she's sure is hell better than others so give our young people a chance and in years to come see where they are---hope not some stuff like monsters ball.

I understand where they coming from. This is a movie that could become a major hit that many ppl are interested to watch. So they want to showcase their own talents and give the part to a black south african actress. I don't see why ppl would have something against that.

People would be less likely to get upset with Morgan Freeman being cast as a South African because he CAN act! Although from the trailers alone his accent does seem off. However, I will protest Jennifer Hudson being picked for any role since she CANNOT act! The only reason she was aight in Dream Girls is because she mostly just had to sing, which is obviously her strong suit. Hated her in "Sex & The City." She almost ruined the whole film for me and I love me some S&C!!! So, I also would like for them to go ahead and choose someone else, they don't have to be from South Africa, but damnit they need to be able to act. How about hiring an actor???
Alfre Woodard played Winnie years ago and knocked it out the park. I don't know if ANYBODY can top her in that role.
