Remember City High? It was two guys and a girl and they had that one song 'What Would You Do?' Anyway, the guy who put the group together, Robby Pardlo, is a recovering alcoholic and did an episode on A&E Intervention. Long story short Robby reveals he turned to alcohol after his band mates betrayed him. The girl in the group Claudette Ortiz was Robby's high school sweetheart but she left him in the middle of a European tour for their other band mate Ryan Toby.

I watched this when it came on the other night. For real for real? I blame his mother for crippling him like that. And the way she totally ignored the other brother was a damn shame. Again, I blame the mother.
I was loading up waiting for this.....
This Shit made my eyes water up.
I'm gonna tell you. I know People a little bit.
Something happened to this Dude. Either when He was young or He did something He is ashamed of when He got into the Music Biz. He gave Himself away on that..."Things Turned Dark" etc etc little comments. Now with that said. He know everyone is wondering why he is a drunk so
He is NOT ashamed to use an excuse of
"Claudette" = BULLSHIT.
People get Drunk like that because they not comfortable in their skin, they want to
forget, they want to get away. I don't see that with "Claudette" yeah, It hurt Him what happened
but That aint the REAL REASON He is a drunk. Did You see Him drinking that Vodka straight?SHIIT
This Man was in Serious Pain. In Recovery You have to Man up about your REAL issues so I'm gonna guess He came clean about what was bothering Him so He can begin to get better,
P.S. His Mom was a Drunk Too! Damn...all that smack She was poppin'
WOW! I think something else happened as well, Claudette was wrong but when your not happy with who you are with you move on, something happened to him - he's drinking away the shame. D*mn! His mom did cripple him...this is just too sad, that song was the jam back in the day!
condemnation comdemnation comdenation! So i guess u guys didn't see it at the end where he'd been sober sine 10-10-2009....so evidently he's getting it together...all this rhetoric being spoken should be prayers that he stays sober! God bless him for being released out of bondage! This why people can't forget their past b/c people constantly bring it up....
yeah that was very sad it had me in tears
Yeah I like the woman who held the intervention. She really told them what they needed to hear. Even though I'm sure they were thinking it the whole time but were too weak to actually go through with it. Love will do that to you. Its so sad and I'm glad he is getting the help that he needs and hopefully he wont go back to it.
I WAS DRUNK WHEN I SAW THAT EPISODE...I HEAR HE'S STILL SOBER!
10:17 you tripping. He's the one who put it out there. Wouldn't nobody be thinking or talking about him if he didn't put it out there. And we not supposed to talk. Whatever.
DEAD at him walking into his intervention with liquor. priceless. i can't watch it right now, but does he just sit up and drink all day or something?
I can't see shit but if I could I'd talk shit about evey last one a them City High muhfuckas. The bitch was fly though, yeah I definitely break her off, repeatedly! And she sound hoeish too...even better!
I DONT UNDERSTAND HOW ANYBODY COULD BE A ALCHOLIC..THAT SHIT GOES DOWN LIKE ACID AND IT MAKES YOU MISERABLE THE MORNING AFTER.I THINK IT WAS FUCKED UP HOW THE DUDE FROM SISTER ACT TWO TOOK HIS WOMAN FROM RIGHT UNDER HIS NOSE WITH HIS OH HAPPY DAY SINGING ASS!!!IT JUST GOES TO SHOW THAT YOU HAVE TO KEEP YOUR FRIENDS CLOSER THAN YOUR ENEMYS..
Wow. I groan whenever I see anything is over 3 minutes but that captivated me for the whole 45 minutes. His mother created the Frankenstein she cannot control with all that indulging. I feel really bad for the neglected brother. This whole family is candidate for its own reality show. Can you imagine what his liver looks like?
CutiePie
@ 10:11
TRUE WHEN YOU ARE NOT HAPPY YOU MOVE ON BUT WITH HIS BAND MATE WHILE THEY WERE ALL ON TOUR TOGETHER!!??..WOW THATS JUST LOW.ITS NOT AN EXCUSE FOR HOW HE TURNED OUT BUT THAT SOUNDS SO DEVASTING.THATS SOME BACKSTABBING LOW DOWN AND DIRTY SHIT..
^^ Blue Danube - you are stupid. And your comments are like BAP's comments - not needed and make no sense. you must be a white 12 year old little boy lol.
I'm glad this brother is getting help and that he has been sober since October '09. His daughter deserves to have a sober father. God Bless him and his family.
His brother, father and grandfather appear to be awesome men. So he has it in him to be the same.
@9:45 cosign!
@9:33, where was his father? Don't you think that the sperm donor has some responsibility too?
Looks like Claudette chose the right one when she went with Ryan Toby, whom she subsequently married. Who in their right mind wants to be with a falling down drunk driver?
BTW, I bet you dollars to donuts he was drinking himself under the table before he got to Claudette.
What a wonderful episode of "Intervention." I'm sitting here at work (don't judge me!) trying not to cry for this brother. I wish Robby and his family all the luck in the world. God Bless you all!
@9:33, review 6:00 to 9:00 in the video. Robby was a little narcissist since elementary school. He had to be the center of attention. His mother spent all of her time trying to deal with him being disruptive in school and trying to is mother was trying to find a career path for this fool. Coddling him all along the way. Note that no mention was made of his father stepping up and putting his foot down on his azz.
Why didn't Dad man up?
So, he now has another woman taking care of his trifling behind, all while he's whinning over how Claudette Ortiz dumped (and rightfully so). Even his grandfather said that he has never cared about anyone but himself.
Mica, take your baby and leave, PLEASE! I know you love him but Robby lacks the capacity to love anyone but himself. Even when he was whining about Claudette, all he said was that she was so pretty and she could sing. He never said that he loved. To him, women are just things to be owned. Is this why his Mom left her husband?
No pity for this fool. Drunkard. Entitled fool. Drink yourself to death if you will, but go somewhere and do it alone. And don't drive with your baby in the car.
@9:33, notice the interventionist told the MEN to go after Robby if he left and not the women. Perhaps if the MEN had held Robby in account for his actions, then he would be a better man and not a self-indulgent drunk.
Om my that was good!!! That's a must watch. That show deserves an emmy nomination for that episode. I never knew about the top 10 percent of blacks reference before watching this. But above all else, it shows what it takes for a strong family to pull together and that counselor was the truth!
i used to know a girl whose daddy raped her regularly and beat her so bad she fell on her head and started having epileptic fits.
when she told her mom that her daddy was boning her, she got called a liar and thrown out of her home at 16.
she had a reason to drink a litre of vodka a day.
what's his?
Damn, I used to love them. #thatisall
I dont understand addictions.
I remember the City High mess. It was a group but Claudia Ortiz was about to blow and leave both those dudes behind. Wyclef and offered her a solo deal. Word was the other band memeber she was creep with knew that if Claudia did her solo the thing City High was a wrap and he did not want to get left out in the cold with the other guy (on Intervention)so he knocked her up on purpose. But it backfired. Claudia was the stand out (...as is usually the case when there is a lone female in a group...Lauryn Hill, Fergie, etc,...) but no one was interested after her belly started getting big. Claudia is not blameless in the whole mess but the other dude was kniving and gutter...he knew what he was doing and he literally f*ucked himself and everyone else out of the chance to really make it in the industry.
ok, preparing to watch all of it now. so the men had to go after him. it's the men that keep families together. how can any family full of men, brothers, uncles, etc let family fall apart.
i had to have this same convo with one of my uncles because my moms and her siblings are all fucked up with discontent and envy. they're all in their 50's, some 60's and still can't host a dinner without drama. i know that unless they get it together, us grandkids are fighting an uphill battle.
ok, off to the video. tangent over.
A modern take of the prodigal's son. Glad that the mother is getting help as well.
Someone said they don't understand addictions. Most of the time it's hereditary. My grandmother was an alcoholic in the latter part of her life. Although me, my mother, nor my sisters, turned into alcoholics, we ALL exhibit some compulsive traits that COULD lead to addiction. I believe that the only reason none of us has yet to go totally nuts is because we notice the behavior pattern exists & adjust ourselves accordingly. Not everyone can do that though. It's sad. Addiction is a disease, even if the person is an asshole, self-centered, whatever. It's still a devil's snare grip and nearly impossible to break clean and STAY clean.
i've seen enough. wow, sad story for him. how crazy that he ended up resenting the mom after all she did for him. all that aside, all he could think of was how she divorced his dad, similar to his dealings with claudette.
i didn't watch the ending, but hopefully he stuck out whatever program they had for him. anika move on. when he sobers up, he still aint gonna want her. she was/is the rebound good girl chick from around the way. she was a safe place for him to run to. he will never want her and will move on to another female.
the oldest brother appears to be ok, though there are some evident scars there as well. his mom's relationship with his daughter in comparison to that of lyric, his brother's daughter???? wow mom.
robby needs to take responsibility and get it together. he let a relationship get him to this point? artists turn pain into works of art. he should do the same. i'm not saying lash out at anyone. write about ur pain, sing about it, it's ok. that's what artists do.
best of luck to them all.
This almost made me cry! His Mom was an enabler; however, she see's that she is at fault in a sense. His poor girlfriend and daughter. I hope that he gets the help that he needs, and he allows himself to put the past behind. And another thing, that was pretty fucked up that the girl in his group left him and married the other guy in the group, what a skeeze! I'm rooting for his recovery!
DINT CLAUDETTE GET MARRIED TO THE DUDE AND THEN GOT KNOCKED UP BY ANOTHER DUDE AFTER THAT WHILE STILL MARRIED?
A BROKEN HEART IS A MUTHA FUCKKA
don't blame it all on mom. dad must of did something too. a lady does not leave her hubby of 40 years for nothing.. i can just imagine how that marriage was in turmoil and mom tried to hold it down and finally got tired i don't blame her. he still blaming his mom. like she should stay with his dad because he is sick i bet he does not know what really broke up the marriage.. so he should stay out his parents business and stop blaming others for his drunkardness.it takes 2 to tango so i know both parents messed up royally. he is way too old to still be playing the blame game in this.. sounds like a few friends and an ex i once knew. 40 years old still blaming mommy and daddy.. he is now old enough to know better. this is why people have a hard time getting clean. they never want to fess up to what really brought them in this.. they never say what THEY did. i too think something happened to this man. but he will never fess up. it is all his mama's and claudettes fault.. just like a man. blame a woman because you are living a life that you should not be living..i believe his being in the industry plays a big part also. he needs to confess then he will recover but if he still continues to blame his mother and claudette he will be a 60 year old drunk.. sad..
Never heard of any of these folks so I can't comment. interesting comments though.
I not well either..
I drink to forget. I drink to ease emotional pain that was inflicted on me.. Sometimes life's problems are too much to bare. I'm aware that drinking does not make problems go away, but it does allow you to escape for little while. Maybe I should get professional help, but I won't.
I will continue to self medicate myself with alcohol.. Don't feel sorry for me. I'm accountable for my own actions.
Maybe one day, my pain will go away and I won't need to do this to myself. I hope so, because I don't want to be a drunk..
Didn't Claudette get pregnant by Wyclef as well? Robby thinks that every woman should respond to him the way he wants them to. His momma did, and his doormat girl did too. Claudette was probably one of the few women that didn't give Robby everything he. Move on Robby. Claudette has....many times.
Cosign at 3:07!
@4:14, No Claudette has two children by her husband. Claudette is still married to her husband. Other than that, you are right.
both parents were partially to blame. when you raise your children with no boundaries, you cannot expect them to turn out ok. it's impossible. he's got to take the brunt of the responsibility though. he's grown and he knows damn well what he was putting in his mouth and body. i'm glad to see he's on the path to recovery though, he has a baby girl to live for and that's a blessing. i wish him the best and i damn sure was here bawling watching him interact with his brother...
looking at stuff like that reminds me of why it's important to raise my son to be responsible, and for me to support him, but not carry him into adulthood. we see how well her blowing off school worked for him, since he continued to live off of women while not even respecting them.
the moment he moved back in with his parents, they should have started a plan to get him back into school or get a trade. instead they continued to take care of his ungrateful behind until he was 30.
@3:33
Hang in there.
Life isn't all sunshine and rainbows. It can be really tough at times. We all have our ups and downs, highs and lows.. I swear, sometimes gain a step forward in life, and then get knocked back two step.. But still, I keep moving forward!
I don't know what you are going thru. but, yes..
you do need help. Self medication with alcohol is not the answer. Many have done this, but the toll it takes on and inside your body makes it not worth it. A doctor will prescribe you what you need to get thru this "hurt" that you are going thru, without the damaging effects of "alcohol self medication"
Hit me up on email for more info..
Robby was taking that bottle staight to the head no chaser. One thing I noticed he blames everyone for his down fall. What he needes to do is look in the mirror.
when he sobers up he gone realize how ugly his bitch is and leave!and that brother needs help as well..he has jealousy issues towards his brother that has been brewing since they were kids
well, word out here in jersey is (and has been for ages) that roby was a monster to claudette as far back as high school, and that as a couple they had issues with his attitude and behavior before they even became a group and blew up. now, in no way am i making excuses for her or ryan's actions because there is a time and a place for everything, and i think it was totally foul to make a break for it the way she did and when she did (as far as with who it was...hmm- i wanna cry foul but maybe you can't help who you fall in love with). i'm just saying he needs to take a long, hard look in the mirror and not only accept responsibility for the person he is, but also for the person he was then as well. maybe that is the key to moving on.
I believe you 8:18. I'm amazed that Claudette had the self esteem to move on. I don't necessarily agree how she did it, but Ryan was there and helped her begin to feel good about herself again. If you don't want to lose the love of your life, be sure to treat them like they are the most important thing in your life. I know at some point, Ike Turner wished he had. Or at least pretended he did.
I liked that one song and Claudette's verse on "911" with Mary and Wyclef.
@8:18, thanks for confirming what I already suspected. Robby has been a bully just about all of his life. He was too good at putting his mother and woman down not to have been doing that shit all of his life.
I think that whatever time and with whomever Claudette made a break for it with, it was way overdue.
And if Claudette saw the intervention on TV, it should confirm to her that she made the right decision. I hope that she appreciates her life with her husband and babies and is thanking God that she is not in Anika's shoes.
@ 4:45PM
You are partially WRONG...
Yes, Claudette has two sons with Ryan and they are still married, but Claudette also had a daughter in 2008 (Aug 2008, to be exact) by someone else while still married to Ryan. Of course, knowing their background, I do not exactly feel soory for Ryan. Karma is a bitch.
@10:17PM - If Claudette made the "right choice" and "appreciates her life with her husband," she would not be creeping out on him and having babies out of wedlock. I know it is hard for many women to concede, but some women are just hoes!
anywho congrats to the brother for ocming up from the dirt clean. you people sit here and shit on him as if your doo-doo dont stink at times. at least he had the will to accept the gift that was given to him by his family. hell im glad he has family unlike so many other addicts
This was very sad, but a very real thing. I wish him all the best with his recovery. I love Intervention. It really shows how addictions affect not only the addict, but also all who love them.
If you ever get a chance, watch Bret's story. Now, that one had me in tears.
There's a lot of judgemental nigga up on here!
I had a tear in my eye while watching that documentary. Sometimes making the wrong choices in life can lead to mental hell. Fortunately for Robby he had a strong family to help pull him out of the mire.
He'll never get the ten years back that was lost through addiction but at least he now has the opportunity to pack all his time productively.
Robby, thank you for sharing your very personal experience. This is made even more significant by the sheer cynicism and negativity that exists within the black community; to 'come out' in such a manner will always bring out a glut of niggardly crabs to condemn, point the finger and to demean. It is a social trait that permeates vast tracts of the black community and is clearly evident by most of the posts on this forum.
This was a very sad story, how a person can be on top of the world one moment and then fall from grace the next. I'm praying for his family as well as Claudette and her family, God Bless! Thanks for sharing this on your blog...
he's putting his mother down and making his dad a saint. his mom should tell that nigga to stay out her business and handle his own.. he treats his lady like shit. still harping on what claudette did years ago.. get over it.. sometimes when we get into a relationship or marriage thinking we are god's gift and that we can treat our mate any kind of way, we get so pissed when they decide to leave our asses.. we want to BLAME them for all the problems in the relationship and one thing i have learned in my 45 years on earth is that the one who is the most angry over a break-up or divorce and are still dwelling over it, it is at least an 80% chance that he or she is the main reason everything ended.. he and claudette have been apart for years. she married and had babies.. he is still harping on it.. it seems like his mother did spoil him. father included and this may be why his brother has some resentment.. they may have seen his talent at a young age and focused more him instead of the other brother. that happens in families where you have a smart child and an average child.. the brains of the family gets all the attention and accolades.. the author i think eric dyson talked about that.. how he has a brother who is in jail for the rest of his life and he(eric) had all the privledges from his parents because he was the smarter child in his parents eyes. he received awards at an early age.. he even said being as that he was lighter and had that "good" hair that also played a part.. he is really hurt over his brother being in jail and he was at the jail visiting him while discussing this.. he feels maybe if his parents had just paid a little more attetion to his bro things may have been different. but still bro has to take responsibility for his actions.
@11:38, how do you know who, if anyone, Claudette is creeping with? Is it you? Again with calling a woman's reputation into to question in order to descredit her.
But even is she is creeping on her husband, which you have no proof of, would you prefer that she dedicate her life and bear children for a drunk who's most recent career has been drinking and blaming women for his problems, primarily the women who have been housing, feeding and catering to his ass?
@bigga thomas, Robby judged himself when he treated the two women who love him most like shit.
Think about the years Robby has taken off of their lives. Think about the 10 years these women won't get back. Both his mom and especially his girl look beat down and tired.
Think about those first years his baby won't get back after hearing her father berate her mother and grandmother.
I got tired just watching that fuckery and thanked God that I didn't have to grow up in a family that believed in wiping their children's butts until they were, well, dead and buried.
However, I do hope that they ALL recover.
And BTW, I can have some sympathy for a drunk, druggie, prostitute, whatever.
I just don't understand how anyone can have sympathy for a bully and a domestic (meaning in the home) terrorist. Yes, he terrorized his family, especially those women, even though it was their fault for tolerating that mess.
@5:07, cosign!
@12:47, his reason was that all 6,692,030,277 human beings on the planet did not cater to his ass as he expected. Or maybe it was some shameful shit that he did while discovering the "darkness" that can be showbusiness. I could feel pity for him, EXCEPT he took his feelings out on the people who love him the most.
@6:23 bigga thomas, you mention the word, "demean". Robby gave us a masterful dissertation on how Black folk can demean other Black folk. With an emphasis on verbally and metally abusing women and children, I might add. He earned that Ph.D. of his in Bullying/Entitlement.
But I hope that he has given that degree back after the intervention.
No one should judge Robby unless you have walked in his shoes. I myself was a hopeless alcoholic. I do know one thing though, JESUS SAVES. You should not use your words to tear him down nor condemn him but rather to build him up and encourage him to stay clean. It wont be easy, but it will be worth it Robby my heart felt prayers go out to you. YOU CAN DO IT
man I wasn't ready for this tonight...his brother just about did it for me with his speech!! That was powerful! If anything the most positive thing about this was his family coming together, all of them and speaking to him articulately and from the heart. There was no ghetto show down, no speculation, it was beautiful everything that was said during his intervention. I hope he stays on the sober path for the sake of his daughter and his girl because she is a different breed of woman to stay with him honestly through all that!
That is the KRAZIEST bit of irony, because City High had a song on their first album called "Best Friend"...And basically, in the song the 3 of them are acting out a situation where Robby is miserable thinking Claudette's cheating on him. So he turns to his best friend,Ryan, to help figure out what's going on. And of course it turns out that she's been cheating with Ryan all along....Damn....
Have we as Black folk lost our way? So much so that no one is asking why did the father not take a stand in this matter given that he and mom where under the same roof? Do we no longer see our men as protectors, only mewling little kittens that need protection from us women? An why was this father's foot knee NOT deep in his son's ass for disrespecting HIS wife. What kind of man allows this type of fuckery in his household? I know that the old man is sick now, but he hasn't been sick for 40 years.
^^^ And why was this father's foot knee NOT deep in his son's ass for disrespecting HIS wife?
This has NOTHING to do with the way one is raised. No one raises an addict. I don't speak for every black person that ever lived, but based on what I've read, seen, and heard... Hear no evil - See no evil - Speak no evil is the motto of a lot in the black community when it comes to homosexuality, sexual abuse, child abuse, obesity, substance abuse, and mental illness.
