Beyonce and her mother Tina Knowles recently opened The Beyonce Cosmetology Center for recovering drug addicts at the Phoenix House in Brooklyn. Speaking about her inspiration for wanting to give back in this way, Beyonce recalled the days spent in her own mother's hair salon and couldn't hold back her tears.

Bey donated her entire salary from Cadillac Records to the Phoenix House. Not every celebrity has to make a grand announcement when they give back. Some actually do it because they care. It's sad that some folks would rather be negative instead of giving credit where its due.

why didn't we hear about this sooner? why wasn't this project launched sooner? why did she have to do this on the eve of the oscars? is because she wasn't invited to the ceremony or was this her way of trying to take a little shine from Monique and the other TALENTED blacks who were nominated for oscars this year and won? and i can't speak for anyone but i think its very tacky to have your name splattered in big bold letters across the walls of a charitable agency you've started. but then this is beyonce we're talking about: no class, no sense.

This is a good thing. Everybody isn't interested in attending college and we all need to skills to earn a living.

Just what we need, more people running around in lacefronts, tacky getups and clown makeup. not to sound negative, but how many more beauty salon's can the black community have? you already have one on every block. the black communities need more skill set than "beauty" medical assistant, medical billing and coding, daycare, a shuttle service to take the elderly shopping, medical appointments, carpentry, mechanic, landscaping. any type of skill set to improve the communities, how about teaching them to refurbish old buildings and turn them into low cost rentals, or day care centers. I'm sorry these folks really need to think outside the box. the urban communities does not need another clothing store, fast food joint, barber shop, beauty shop, nail shop, they need real sustaining jobs, with skill set that improves the standard of living in those communities.

Anything that gives back to the community is a good thing! I'm sure the women of the center are very grateful. When I volunteered at a women's shelter, I found even the basic things us ladies do for upkeep is a luxury there. Not only will the ladies learn (or sharpen) a skill, but they can have a hand in uplifting each other. When you think you look good, you feel good.
