WHAT you DIDN'T see on TV! OPRAH WINFREY's mother collapsed after a painful secret from her past was revealed on the talk-show diva's recent family reunion show - and now close friends and family members are terrified she's going to have another stroke.
On Jan. 24, Oprah surprised the nation by revealing she had recently learned she has a half sister named Patricia - whom her mother Vernita Lee secretly gave up for adoption at birth.
Oprah, who met Patricia over Thanksgiving, persuaded both her half sister and her mother to appear on The Oprah Winfrey Show - something Vernita didn't want to do.
"Poor Vernita never wanted the show to happen," a family insider told The ENQUIRER.
"She had kept the secret of Patricia's birth to herself for 47 years.
"She never wanted to meet Patricia and certainly didn't want Oprah involved."
But once Oprah learned about her new sibling, she realized it would be a ratings blockbuster to introduce her on national television.
"But no one ever took Vernita's feelings into consideration," maintained the source. "Once Patricia agreed to do the show, Oprah had tunnel vision - big ratings were all she could see."
Vernita, 75, is in fragile health. She recently suffered a stroke and is slurring her words, say sources. She also has high blood pressure, diabetes, and uses a cane.
"Vernita does what Oprah tells he rto do - because Oprah pays the bills," divulged the insider.
"So when Oprah told Vernita they were doing a show and she wanted Vernita to appear, she felt she had no choice. They even taped a segment at Vernita's Milwaukee condo, because she was too weak to travel to Oprah's Chicago studio.

This is only a "private" situation if her half sister wants it to be. If oprah said she wanted to do a show about reconnecting with her sister, and her sister agrees to do it then what's the problem? Both Oprah and her sister are grown women and make their own decisions. If anyone shamed the family it was oprah's mother. If she would've told the truth years ago, before oprah even had a show then it wouldnt be a big issue now.
Vernita was a Black single woman in the '60's, in the South. No one knows how Patrice was conceived or who the father is/was. It could have been rape, and even if it wasn't the issue of birth control (or lack thereof) for poor women in general, Black women in particular, during those days was a huge problem.
And.....I want to know what Pro-lifers have to say about this. Calling Vernita loose because Patrice is proof of a sexual encounter, forced or otherwise, is beyond unfair.

You're right in one aspect, if I put a kid up for adoption, I wouldn't want to see him/her down the line asking me all types of questions. Think about this situation, you might be in an abusive marriage, end up pregnant and put the child up for adoption. Would you really want that child coming back to remind you of that bad marriage? I gave my daughter up for adoption at the age of 24 to my 2nd cousin, and it's the best thing i ever did. It took me another 5 years before I could get my life right. I went from homless shleter to another abusive relationship. My daughter deserved better. She's 12 years old, in private school, and very much loved. That's precisely my point--you quoted a KID. Who knows what he will grow up to become? Kid's are prone to be dramatic, and he probably was crying out for attention. Surely he would've killed himself otherwise.
at any rate you quoted one kid and if you claim to work with foster kid's it's YOUR job to make that kid feel wanted. Find a new job if you lack empathy because saying that all unwanted kids should be aborted is foolish. There is always a purpose in our lives; our goal is to figure it out. if you're supposedly working with with foster kids--do your damn job and help these kids find their way instead of claiming they should all be aborted/dead!

thats the problem right there nobody takes the time to listen to the kids they just assume things then they wonder why they grow up with issues. My job is to motivate the kids but also be a good listener/friend/role model someone that they can confide in. I cant motivate them unless I take the time to hear their story and what they have to say/how they feel. Before I even talk to a new kid I have to study their file just so I know how to approach them. You cant just lecture them you have to try to relate to them and since i was adopted its a little easier for them to confide in me. And just because your foster house was filled with silver spoons doesnt mean everyone gets the same treatment.

@5:08 age 14 is a child and as i said it's your job to help him find his way--i didn't say anything about 'lecturing' him. you should be encouraging him. most kids are resilient and as long as they know that someone cares for them they can make it--it doesn't have to be a parent. Liz Murray was an abandoned, homeless child with drug addicted parents--yet she went from homeless to Harvard because people took time to mentor and care for her. But had it been your way, she would've been aborted. You said it yourself.
Just because a kid experiences hard times and shares their pain with you doesn't mean these kids should've been aborted. Life is painful and you're a fool if you think anyone makes it through life without pain--pain builds character and strength. Perhaps if you do your job right some of the kids you mentor will make something of themselves--otherwise you're in the wrong line of work.
