With 'The Help' snagging four Oscar nominations, including one for 'Best Picture', Mary J. Blige was clearly expecting an Oscar nod for 'Best Original Song' for 'Living Proof' from 'The Help' soundtrack.
Not only was Mary shut out, only two songs were even nominated though there were five nomination slots available....

first!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would not even worry about it Mary! Live Life and keep it moving, these award shows are so bias now it does even mean the same.
Don't sweat it, Blige. It's all good. :-)
This is one of the worst years ever in the history of the Academy so she is in VERY good company as far as snubs go.
Although I didn't love the film, I did enjoy her song and thought she did a great job writing it. Mary is a true talent!
These award shows are like cheap Halloween candy now. There's so much payola and corruption that's come out in blogs and news sites I don't understand why people still give credence to their legitimacy.

The Oscars are not like the BET awards you just can’t get a nomination because you are popular. There is a real system and Mary didn’t get that 8.25 average to get a nomination. Check the criteria below.
While most Oscar categories have a fixed minimum and/or maximum number of nominations (such as the Best Original Score, which always has five nominations), the Best Original Song category can have a number of nominations varying from two to five. This is due to the rules set by the Academy. The rules stipulate that each member of the Music Branch of the Academy is asked to vote for their favourite songs, using a special points system using 10, 9.5, 9, 8.5, 8, 7.5, 7, 6.5 or 6 points.
Only those songs receiving an average score of 8.25 or more are eligible for nomination. If no song receives an average of 8.25 or more, there will be no nominees. If only one song achieves that score, it and the song receiving the next highest score shall be the two nominees (as has been the case in the 2011 Oscars, awarded in 2012).
Not every song used in a film is eligible for this category. According to Academy rules, a song should be "original and specifically written for a motion picture. There must be a clearly audible, intelligble, substantive rendition (not necessarily visually presented) of both lyrics and melody, used in the body of the motion picture or as the first music cue in the end credits."
The song wasn't that great. To be honest I would have only gave a vote of 6.5 vote the song. What number would you have voted?
If 3-6 Mafia wack asses can get nominated and then win an Oscar for It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp, every name on that list should have gotten an 8.25. That was the most embarrassing shyt I've ever witnessed. Dancers dressed up like pimps and hoes with the wackest rappers ever...I haven't watched the Oscars since!!!
@3:46 touché...I stand corrected LOL! I still say mary song wasn't all of that.
^^^ TOTALLY CO-SIGN with 3:46 p.m. After that mess, I knew the fix had to be in somewhere. I don't put too much credence on the Oscars anyway. To me, a good movie is a good movie. It doesn't have to win an award.
Mary's song SUCKED!!! HATED IT!!! I don't think there was a slight at all! The song wasn't Oscar material! Plain and simple!
This is why I don't fuck with the Oscars...old dried up shit. How are you going to nominate 9 films for Best Picture then only 2 songs for Best Original Song (whether Mary was 1 or not). So is the Oscar committee or whatever saying that of all of the films that came out in 2011 that ONLY 2 had original songs? Really? Or is it there were only 2 THEY WANTED to nominate.
I never watch this crap anymore...it's long and boring. I just look online the day after for a list of the winners
@4:17.. I know'd there is a God *in Mrs. Sophia's voice*! I totally agree with you.
@4:24 please see @3:40...thanks!
So what are they going to do for musical performances when the Oscars airs?
The show is like 4 hrs long and usually the nominated songs are performed throughout the show. What are they going to do for musical performances now?
I just know that the Oscar people are not going to ask the non-nominated artists that created original music for movies last year to perform and fill in the gaps when they didn't think they deserved a nomination.
Mary, if they ask you to sing you better keep your black ass at home. I wouldn't go and sing shit for them nutbags!!!!
I'll play devil advocate up in this bitch for a minute. Them mofos snubbed Mary's song for an Oscar because it would kill them to give a Black woman her proper due for doing something creative and positive. They love giving out Oscar nominations to Black women for typical hooker, hoe, dopefiend, housekeeper (Olivia and Viola), abusive Black mother (Monique for Precious), nappy headed plantation woman (Oprah for Colored Purple), white man's sex slave (Halle for Monster's Ball) portrayals, but they love to shut Black women out when it comes positive, intelligent roles and things. Let a sister do something positive like write a nice song for a movie and them mofos turn a blind eye. But they had no problem giving 3-6 one for that bullshit "Hard Out Here..." Why? Because they love to see negroes talking/singing about pimping and hoeing and bitches. I'll bet if Maxwell or John Legend, or Eric Benet ever wrote a nice song for a movie, they'd get snubbed, too.
Thank you. That is all.

I agree, but you wrong on the "white mans sex slave" in monsters ball. By no means was the character a slave to anybody. and she pushed him into sex when he was trying to leave, he turned on his racist father to try and have something with her, but he had to wait for her to agree before they could have anything.
niggas need to stop hating on that film, the story was deep. it was about 2 people comming together at the darkest point in thier lives. so what she had sex with a white man, she half white any damn way. I suspect that most of the hateful comments on that film come from those that didn't even bother to really watch it. I also found that the story went right over some people's head cause they not that bright. oh well.
Now ask yourselves why "It's hard out here for a pimp" won-- See comments on Oscar nomination for the movie. I haven't heard Mary's song or any new songs in a minute( yes, I live under a rock) but I bet the message of the song was not Academy approved.
^^^^"Precious" was far more offensive than Monster's ball
-evil, abusive, dark skinned mother - Mo'Nique
-good, saintly light skinned teacher - Paula Patton
-good, saintly light skinned male nurse - Lenny Kravitz
The same pathetic stereotypes portrayed in most Oprah & Tyler Perry productions. Those two fools are color struck. Plain and simple.
Just checked out the lyrics on "Murray's" song it was far to positive to even be considered.
I'm sorry but Monster's Ball was some bullshit. Slingblade was way better. I like 'fried taters too' LOL
Don't ever expect to being nominated for an academy award and make it public, they will ignore you.
Madonna made a proclamation like that for " Evita" , her name wasn't even mentioned as a possibility.
Devil's advocate, here: I stand corrected. What I should've said was "white man's cum dumpster" for Monsters Ball. My point was that they can't be bothered to honor a Black actress unless she showing her ass and titties to the world, and that Black actresses aren't even thought of unless they're playing some subservient, negative role. They don't even make movies with positive Black female characters as the lead, and they damn sure don't make intelligent movies written by intelligent Black female movie writers. Intelligent Black women get shut down real quick and Black female actresses get relegated to the types of stereotypical roles mentioned above. Please name ONE movie that was made that was written by an intelligent Black female screenwriter, or ANY movie written by a Black female, period, that was considered for a nomination. I don't think you can, because they wanna hear from intelligent Black women. Black women basically can take their scripts and stick 'em up their Black asses is what the message really is from Hollywood.
^^^sorry, meant "they DON'T wanna hear from intelligent Black women." typo
After reading her tweet. The mind is a terrible thing to waste. Stay in school and get an education.
Mary don't get mad because alot of people get snub so don't even trip.
@3:40
The rules even go further. The music cue at the credits is timed so if the music doesn't start in a certain number of seconds after the start of credits it's not eligible. I think Madonna was disqualified because of this.
I Looove Mary, But That Song Was Horrible. Mary Has Started To Write Her Own Material. She Can't Even Write A Twitter Message.Production On Her Albums Is Cheap Also. Mary Can't Even Sing. That Is Why Writing And Production Are Important. Despite All Of That I Still Love Mary. Get A Team Of Writers Like Taylor Swift Has.
I thought she had a song stating she wont cry no mo. How old will she be when she STOP CRYING? I mean dam!! Her and T.O. Cry more then a new born.
@451
Co sign. Bottom line is Hollywood want to only give props to black folks when they fill those stereotypical roles! This is why she was snubbed. This is why the help---- got nominated because the role--- black women as MAIDS. It is never a role for black people where we are represented in a positive light and not no coon shit either. Like Denzel should of won for Malcolm X! But no--- it would kill Hollywood to honor Denzel for that role. But him as a crocker cop..... Rewarded with an Oscar?
Same for Hallie Berry---- rewarded for acting like a slut with a white man on camera......again why she wasn't rewarded for Dorthery Dandridge?
Monique given an Oscar to act like a LOUD MOUTH ghetto abuser! Seriously why every time a black person get an Oscar it is to fit the roles!?!
Jennifer Hudson----- given Oscar to be a loud mouth singer in a movie.
I want one dam movie with a black actor or actress to get an Oscar without them playing a maid, a slut, a pimp, child abuser, fat person, crocked cop, coon shit, cross dresser Tyler perry Madea, and so on. Can black folks get the opportunity to play a role without this crap?
I want to see if Red Tails get any nomination next year!! Smh
@910. ROTFLMAO! For real.... I love Mary but to be honest I am feeling her old stuff better than this shit. I think what happen to Mary is that she has no "real emotions or hunger for the game" anymore. This is the reason her songs all sound like fillers to me. Great voice.....but the songs are blah to me. Her new album is a mess. My life part 2 should never been done. It is an embarrassment to My Life part 1!
@9:10 I was thinking the same thing. There were so many Snubbs and Surprises this year Tree of Life for real. Tom hanks paid big bucks for his movie Incredible stupid and dumb was added with bad reviews.
"Same for Hallie Berry---- rewarded for acting like a slut with a white man on camera again why she wasn't rewarded for Dorthery Dandridge?"
@ The Real Fed Up:
She won the Emmy for that performance. The Dorothy Dandridge movie was for TV not for the silver screen.
@3:40, You were way too generous. I would have given it a 6 (and I usually love Mary's music).
@3:46, I still side eye the Academy to this day because of that fiasco.
YOU CAN'T WIN EM ALL SHE'S NOT THAT GOOD ANYWAY.
@11:57 pm. Go fucking die somewhere. Mary is ALL that. You wish you could maintain a solid 20 yr career. My Life 2 is almost gold for all of you haters on here. Mary will always shine & reign supreme regardless of the Ocars. Her career speaks loud & clear. Stay mad haters.
Mary sounds like shit. Always have. She ought to be happy she got this far with that mess she's been screaming for years. Ugh!
Irene cara, prince, lionel richie and stevie wonder have all won oscars for their songs.
Although it may be nice to receive recognition of your hard work and efforts, I believe success is not measured by your destination but progress. Same with music, good music is not determined by awards/accolades but music that comes from the soul, that your people can relate to. Good music that stirrs up emotion deep down within us, music that helps us get by in our day to day. Music that you can come home to and just chill. That to me is a true artist. I wish Mary and others like her stop letting awards define their craft.
^^^^TRUE!
But Mary need to stop whining all the time! DARN
Jenn was good in Dreamgirls; better than Bey, and Denzel was great in Training Day. He was good in X, too. Halle was much better in Losing Isaih than Monster's Ball. I didn't care for that film. At its core, Precious is a positive movie. (Lenny Kravitz isn't light skinned, but does it really matter?)
I don't know about Mary's song, but this isn't the way you go about things. You have your PR put something out or your surrogates make statements, not you. Stars need to stay off twitter whining. ( Are you listening Aurthur?)
~ Wild Safari~
Lenny Kravitz isn't light skinned, but does it really matter?)
lenny isnt lite skinned??? then what is he??

Very right 5:25. I thought it was a great movie also. You took the words right out of my mouth.
Mary ,can sing now but in her earlier years she just screamed.
first of all mary is to old and has been to long to be crying a over a grammy snub bish you done had your success what the hell is grammy snub compared to all of your other awards and achivements.mary is not in her prime any more like that i mean her cd flop on the bill board and hot 100 thats what she should be crying about.
