Although I doubt Diddy knows this but "Paris is burning" is a phrase that was written in a 1871 newspaper about the bombing of Paris by Prussia. Also, Hitler was suppose to have said or asked, "is Paris burning?"
The title of the documentary about gay balls in NYC was a takeoff of these statements. Jennie Livingston knew her history and applied an apt historical phrase to her movie.

It was so sad in the documentary "Paris Is Burning" Octavia Saint Laurent,dreamed of being like the white models of the 80's...she spoke of these white models like they were all that she lived for,eyes all wide and bright, like a little girl,on Christmas morning...She lived a life of fame in the Ball room scene,never to achieve "real" fame...she aged,flawlessly,gained booty injections,not fame, then died....

apparently, the film took almost ten years to make due to financing problems...i wouldn't have known. but, i was impressed with the artistry that the men and women featured showed and expressed themselves. also, what is interesting about the commentary track is learning about what has become of some of the people in the film...sadly, most of them had their fame only in the ballroom and only in this film.

During WWII Hitler asked his chief of staff Alfred Jodl "Is Paris Burning" because he ordered the city to be destroyed rather than allow the allies to take it over unharmed. Luckily, the general who received the orders disobeyed Hitler and Paris was not burning.
In Jennie Livingston's film there is a drag queen whose drag name is Paris Dupree. Paris holds an annual ball cleverly titled ... "Paris is Burning" .....knowing that Paris is the fashion capital of the world he used the phrase to title his ball as if to say Paris will burn with envy after they see what happens at his ball. Jennie Livingston just titled the movie after Paris and his ball. Madonna used the voqueing style from these very balls to aid her career... why would it be so absurd to think Diddy would do the same.. he knows who the trend setters are.
