“A lot of the time you want to hang out or have friendships with people. If they're famous and I'm single it's an automatic, automatic 'they're on, they're dating and I hate that. I don't even want to date. I'm single. I just want to have friends. That's a hard pill for some people to swallow."

She's getting off easy. Folks are just wondering if she's dating him. George Clooney has had to deal with gay rumors for years. She's not helping herself by avoiding the question. It's just going to make people get even more nosey. Sometimes honesty is the best policy, even though her personal life is no one's business.
