Former Arista exec Kenneth Reynolds recalls when gay rumors about Whitney Houston began 17 years ago.
In Vanity Fair’s June issue, Reynolds tells Mark Seal that a request Houston made for childhood friend Robyn Crawford to travel with her sparked gossip.
“Whitney had gone on a promotional tour without Robyn in 1985,” he says. “When she came back, we were going to the National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters Convention in Washington, DC.” He adds that suits quietly bought Crawford a plane ticket, too, “because Whitney missed her.”
Reynolds told a colleague, “Don’t make a big fuss about it . . . all you need is a bunch of straight, macho radio jocks finding out that Whitney wants Robyn on the trip.”
But it stoked the rumor mill anyway. “Pretty soon the whole building was buzzing,” Reynolds says. “That was . . . when rumors about Whitney’s sexuality started.”
Houston and Crawford denied the rumors. VF’s Seal sent Crawford a package in hopes of an interview. It was returned with a note, “Refused...does not want.”

Why couldn't it be that they were just FRIENDS and that Whitney just wanted someone close and familiar around to keep her grounded. Best friends do everything together--they can be like sisters. Why couldn't it be just that?? Why did it automatically have to mean the girls were gay??

A friend of mine who was in the music industry at the time told me that whitney wanted to have her killed because she would't sleep with her anymore.

This was the '80s. A successful, young, attractive black woman without a man on her arm just HAD to be painted as a lesbian in the media. Hollywood wasn't sure what to do with Whitney because there wasn't anyone like her before. Diana Ross and Donna Summer both had marriages and kids. Whitney didn't, so they made blanket assumptions.
Whitney and Robyn had been friends since they were teens. Whatever the nature of their friendship, Whitney obviously felt that Robyn was one of the only people that she could trust. It seems that she was right as we haven't head Robyn ever air out any of Whitney's personal business.
Will they let poor Whitney rest in peace?! They bout to dig her a new grave since she's turned around so many times in it.

Umm sorry Whitney. My friend's mom was a flight attendant and told us she saw Whitney on a plane hugged up and kissing the white actress ( can't remember her name) this was BEFORE all the rumors started, like 1984.
ah yeah. Sorry to say but several people in the music industry around that time have said to me they know whitney and Robyn were more than friends. I've heard it spoken about by makeup artists, hair stylists, and diff people in the restaurant industry (you know servers see everything) also way before now. I just think in the entertainment industry creative people tend to explore alot of stimuli whatever form it may take. At the end of the day they choose to walk their own paths.
Who cares if Whitney was bi? Probly couldn't find a man to satisfy her. I know Bobby couldnt lol.

@6:06 DITTO. I have people from Jersey who knew Whitney...ran in the same circles. She had girlfriends even when she was with Bobby. I never cared. I loved her music and movies.
at the end of the day...who gives a shit who/what she loved or didn't. i believe she was bi and that ultimately it was this "dirty little secret" and what this truth might have meant to her family, religion and fans that fueled her addictions and early death.
So sorry to dissapoint those non believers but YES Whitney Houston was very much gay. So is Alicia Keys which both happen to be under Clive Davis. Clive is all about keeping the gay lifestyle in the industry a seceret. Not sure why since his lovers are all males and very young. He does this especially when is comes to marketing his artist. I went to school with Whitney and she was NEVER with a man. Her mom asked a neighborhood friend to take her to the prom. As for Alica I worked for Clives label for awhile and there was nothing femenine about Alicia so they decided to change all that the same way they did for Whitney. The media will cover this story up because they do not want black gays to come out of the closet. This is about to all change. No one is knocking Ellen D. She has the number one talk show and is a major figure for a number one cosmetic company. We will soon stop trying to hide it with all the bullying taking place.
