The losses at Oprah Winfrey’s stumbling cable channel are approaching a staggering $330 million, according to a report over the weekend.
And now industry insiders are predicting the Oprah Winfrey Network will not be able to survive another year if it does not find a hit show and make a dramatic turnaround.
Discovery, which partnered 50-50 with Winfrey to launch the network and has been underwriting its costs, has invested nearly $600 million in it since 2008, according to an extensive report in Businessweek magazine.
But since it started on the air in January 2011, “OWN may have lost as much as $330 million,” the magazine reports.
The magazine quotes one Wall Street media analyst calling the channel the most “successful failure in television today.”

I actually like OWN. I love Unfaithful, Masterclass, and Lifeclass. However, although I like those shows I do realize that the target audience is very limited. Something is missing and I pray she finds it soon. I would hate to see her fail in the effort.

When Oprah was by her-self she did well. When Discovery wanted in and own half of own it is doing poorly. Maybe it is the people that own more shares make poor decisions regarding her vision for a t.v channel.

Getting a channel that is not on basic tv, or even basic cable, was her problem. People would have to pay extra to just to get that channel, and in this economy that aint happening.
She thought she was a deity and that her droves of mortal fans would follow their god to OWN. But in a world where even basic cable has hundreds of channels, there's took much other good shit to watch. With on-demand (comcast), a nigga can watch all the re-runs and free movies possible. I gave O shit about OWN at first then I started watching to support her. I really like OWN as well and when you watch you can tell this whole thing is humbling her to no end. Either way I hope it makes it b/c we (as humanity) need more positive television.
The problem is, Oprah is too whitewashed. She's not black enough for the black community - and not yt enough for the caucasians. The programming on OWN sucks b/c Oprah wants to have this "high level" of broadcast w/ out being stereotypical - and I applaud her for that - but - she has to realize that if you want to make money sometimes you gotta get in the gutter - and unfortunately - some of the most successful shows are streotypical, reality tv shows that are gutter! She better pull her head out of her ass.

I took the time to read the entire article thie morning and RWS has completely distorted what was actually written. The article does talk about the challenges it's been to create and grow a network from ground zero but it also talks about the sucess the network has had too including several hit show like Master Class, Lisa Ling's America and of course the biggest hit Welcome To Sweetie Pie's. And the ratings are up significantly since last season. RWS seems to think that we are all dumb and will simply believe any and every thing they post, however distorted. No I'm not Oprah and I'm not a stan but I do like a little accuracy in what I'm read on this site.

exactly 1:06. Her talk show being on a basic, non cable channel was a huge selling point. her main audience are stay at home moms who probably dontt have extra $$ for a deluxe cable plan. That is a HUGE leap to jump from non cable tv to a cable channel that you have to purchase an extra, expensive plan to watch. idk why she thought it would work.
