Apparently Shaq enrolled in Barry University in Miami several years ago and recently submitted his thesis on The Effects of Humor and Seriousness in Leadership Styles.
The chair of Barry University's Organizational Learning and Leadership and Human Resource Development program tells Gossip Extra,
“[Shaq] is a very impressive guy, very inquisitive, and it’s a pleasure to have him as a student. I think the degree will serve as an example for others, and he should be very proud of himself.”

If he didn't not have money he would not be a Dr of anything. I know about those "joke" universities. Reputation is a big deal in academia, and you need more than a bought piece of paper to make it through. My mentor's paper was 900 plus pages so you are writing a book when you get on that level. Colleges are political like all things in life and it would help this make money to claim shaq as an alumni. And it takes more than being accredited for school to to provide the education that will advance your career.

Technically, you write a dissertation for a doctorate, but different programs have different requirements/terminology. Also, it's not a direct quote from a news source stating that it was a thesis he wrote, it's RWS' reporting, so what exactly are y'all calling shenanigans on...

i dont get the comments about the school being suspect because its in the hood.... Spelman, Clark and Morehouse are located in what most would consider the hood so location doesnt really matter...
First, I admire any person, esp a Black person who is trying to better themselves through higher education,
Secondly, even if the school is accredited, his doctorate means nothing if he were a regular, non-famous person trying to compete for a job against a person with a PhD from Stanford or UC Berkeley, etc.
Third, I've never seen his text messages nor do I follow his career but texting is usually broken English because people are abbreviating so that doesn't make him dumb.
Fourth, if you have a BA degree, you can be accepted into a doctoral program.
Fifth, a doctorate in Education does not hold the same weight as a PhD. Look it up. It's too long to explain here but I will tell you this; a person with a doctorate in Education usually will not be hired in a college academic setting if they are in competition with a person who has a PhD.
Sixth, I am currently an MBA student with 6 more classes to go before I graduate next year.
Next fall, I will be applying to PhD Business programs so I know the level of work that it takes to even get into programs like this.
Most PhD programs get an average of 500 applications and accept only 2% of their applicants. It's very tough and competitive. People who have PhDs are academics and researchers. They do years and years of research and then try to get it published.

Often times, people get these online PhDs so that they can have the title of "doctor" when they really haven't put in the work. Believe me, it's a lot of work. And I personally get sick and tired of these mofos wanting the "glory" but not putting forth the effort. Example" getting "honorary degrees" when they've never done academic research, never opened a book, don't know Stats. This shit pisses me the fuck off!
Seventh, just because someone doesn't believe that Shaq put in the hard work, doesn't make them "jealous" or a "hater."
Eighth, I'm sick and tired of all these famous people getting "honorary degrees" from academic institutions. College especially at the Graduate level is A LOT OF WORK!
It takes 4 years minimum of full time studies to get a doctorate degree,sometimes even longer but most universities will fund you for 4 years.
During that time, students take classes for 2 years. After that time is up, they have to take comprehensive exams before they can work on their dissertation which is 2 years. Also during the second year, they give you a "mandatory" job as a research assistant or teacher so that you get experience in academia. The accredited PhD programs are so challenging that students are not allowed to work more than 20 hours a week and international students have to work less than that.
Dissertations can be on any topic of the student's choice. The student must be very focused, driven and be able to work independently even though they will be lead by a Professor.
Also, even though I am a business major, I can tell you that ANY discipline you study at the doctoral level will involve statistics. One most know stats for data collection. I'm not saying that Shaq is dumb because I don't think he is. But for some reason, I don't see him hypothesizing, gathering data, managing focus groups, etc. But, I could be wrong.
Ninth, I'm not bragging but if you ever meet someone who has gone through an accredited program (at any university) not DeVry or Phoenix or Cappella, at the Graduate level, it is A LOT OF HARD WORK! I've been in my MBA program since the Spring of 2010 and it's very intense. There are a lot of case studies and reading and projects. I'm not saying he didn't do this but for some reason, I cant see Shaq doing this. But like I said, I could be wrong.
I'm not saying that Shaq really didn't earn this degree but I doubt it. Why didn't he go to the University of Miami? They have more credibility than Barry University and they are in Miami.

Shaq has always had his educational grind. He graduated from Louisiana State University. Before he retired he was the only NBA player w/an MBA (Master of Business Administration).

why does it matter where the school is located? because Yale is in the middle of pistol wavin New Haven, CT so I don't get how location matters. Howard isnt in the best area either.
UOP is regionally accredited. It can be very rigorous and stresses workplace proficiency. Not sure about this school?

Wake up and stop the hate! Dr. O'Neal earned his education if you want a title like his do something about it and stop the hate. The fact is that everyone has choices to make in life no matter where they come from so remember if your not a Doctor maybe you didn't really want it bad enough. Dr. O'Neal used his athletic skills to get him to school and after leaving school early for an NBA career still went back to complete his undergraduate studies which only a hand full have done. There are to many today that get hung up on big name schools like they are the only ones certified to teach and provide worthly degrees. Those of you who are hating because you would optain your degree dishonestly shouldn't place Dr. O'Neal in your shoes because he is not you so why should he be considered dishonest when education is what he wants to do. All Ivy League schools and most Universities that are over 100 years old are located in the "hood", Spelman, Morehouse, and CAU are also. Though these neighborhoods eventually get gentrified; either way, location has jack to do with a school's credibility, unless of course, it has no actual building in the first place, lol.
