Clearly, neither her alternative educational experience nor her travels have allowed her to write at 12th grade level, however, they could possibly have given her something interesting to write about (have yet to hear what that is, though).

Don't knock K-12, though; it has it's place when done correctly. Rarely do students who have not completed K-12 attend college, and our US graduate schools are FULL of foreign students, especially in the sciences.

K-12 education is not about memorizing textbooks - it's about learning to read, learning to write, and learning mathematics. Add to that science, history, art, music, citizenship, fitness, discipline of the mind, etc. And that costs $$$.

I think people need to read and travel to find an interest (and hopefully a practical one) and hone that skill to be beneficial to themselves and society. I do agree with you, at least in regarding to your last sentence, because I don't find Beyonce to be all that bright. I honestly think, IMO, she is just a mediocre businesswoman who has familiarity with the profession she's in but has many handlers who carry her along the way, however she can only make vacillating nebulous assumptions or opinions on other issues, current, cultural or otherwise.

Sure back in the day some judgmental a**hole manipulated the world into believing community college was low-level and a 4-year college was the key to success (Bullsh*t), but as we can all see now, that's not the facts, in fact if you're lucky and have a connection you can skip college all together and work your way to the top if you're smart and creative. 4-year colleges was just another mind f*ck America dropped on us as being absolutely necessary, and now students are jobless and forever in debt for a 4-year degree that has yet to change our lives. Meanwhile, the community college student is working with zero to minimum loan debt and their school probably actually gave them job training, meanwhile at the 4-year college you can come or not come, change majors 12 times, major in something stupid that doesn't have a promising future and your professor/adviser won't say sh*t to save you, they just take that tuition and let you run free and when it's all over they don't even offer you job placement. I know 2 people whose 4-year degree offered them nothing, so they decided to do that alternative teacher certification program so they could start a career. this new age of community college is way better. Less money, career training and maybe some job placement. All that past hype about having a Bachelor's vs an associates is played out. And some employers that use to offer employees extra benefits for having a degree, don't even do that anymore, the person with the bachelor's and the person with the associates or certificate are on the same damn level these days

It depends on what type of education you are talking about and what the educational goals are. Clearly, neither her alternative educational experience nor her travels have allowed her to write at 12th grade level, however, they could possibly have given her something interesting to write about (have yet to hear what that is, though).
Each person has to decide what their educational goals are, then choose the type of educational program that will help them achieve that. Don't knock K-12, though; it has it's place when done correctly. Rarely do students who have not completed K-12 attend college, and our US graduate schools are FULL of foreign students, especially in the sciences.

Not all schools do it that way. There are different types of schools. Some are more successful with their particular methods than others. Let's not make the mistake of branding all schools with the characteristics of the less successful ones.

K-12 education is not about memorizing textbooks - it's about learning to read, learning to write, and learning mathematics. Add to that science, history, art, music, citizenship, fitness, discipline of the mind, etc. And that costs $$$.
There's nothing wrong with the concept of K-12 education, but there is something wrong with the quality of education that is available to most of the children in this country.
BTW there's nothing wrong with memorization - it has it's place and time, too. I want to say that I am happy that my surgeon took the time in med school to "memorize" each and every part of the anatomy, and then took that knowledge into the practice of medicine.

That is so, SO, true. The national college debt "bubble" has surpassed national credit card debt, to the tune of $1 trillion. Yet America ranks damn near last in education.
What's sad is that while the economy is collapsing all around us (businesses are closing/outsourced, schools are shut down), people are still pushing the idea(l) that going to college and getting a $110,000 piece of paper saying "Ah's diss smaht" will get you that dream job (that is now in China or India).
Don't get me wrong, I subscribe to the fact that regardless of formal (aka government mandated/funded/fascist) education you should never stop learning. I think people need to read and travel to find an interest (and hopefully a practical one) and hone that skill to be beneficial to themselves and society. I do agree with you, at least in regarding to your last sentence, because I don't find Beyonce to be all that bright. I honestly think, IMO, she is just a mediocre businesswoman who has familiarity with the profession she's in but has many handlers who carry her along the way, however she can only make vacillating nebulous assumptions or opinions on other issues, current, cultural or otherwise.
That said, and as Marvin and Tammi sang it, Ain't nothing like the real thing, baby. Reading about an experience and actually living through it makes a world of difference. There's only so much vicariousness a book can give you but you living that experience makes it unique to you (and doesn't give others the suspicion that you are perpetrating a fraud).

when i was in high school I did work study and had a job assignment at a community college bookstore and they were there doing big sh*t like engineering,computer science,nursing and accounting. Sure back in the day some judgmental a**hole manipulated the world into believing community college was low-level and a 4-year college was the key to success (Bullsh*t), but as we can all see now, that's not the facts, in fact if you're lucky and have a connection you can skip college all together and work your way to the top if you're smart and creative. 4-year colleges was just another mind f*ck America dropped on us as being absolutely necessary, and now students are jobless and forever in debt for a 4-year degree that has yet to change our lives. Meanwhile, the community college student is working with zero to minimum loan debt and their school probably actually gave them job training, meanwhile at the 4-year college you can come or not come, change majors 12 times, major in something stupid that doesn't have a promising future and your professor/adviser won't say sh*t to save you, they just take that tuition and let you run free and when it's all over they don't even offer you job placement. I know 2 people whose 4-year degree offered them nothing, so they decided to do that alternative teacher certification program so they could start a career.
this new age of community college is way better. Less money, career training and maybe some job placement. All that past hype about having a Bachelor's vs an associates is played out. And some employers that use to offer employees extra benefits for having a degree, don't even do that anymore, the person with the bachelor's and the person with the associates or certificate are on the same damn level these days
