Keyshia Cole Says Mary J. Blige Never Offered Help

In a recent interview Keyshia Cole blasts Mary J. Blige for never offering her any help or advice in the industry...

Keyshia tells Singers Room,
… I’m very happy to have been compared to such a wonderful woman, a strong woman. The only thing that I would’ve changed, that I am now here to do for those that come after me, is to lend a helping hand. I feel that even if it’s not me saying I’m gonna record with you, I’m gonna work with you or let’s go hang out or anything like that; we don’t have to be friends, but at the end of the day, being able to give advice or help somebody that is coming under you is an amazing gift to be able to have. I wish I would have had that from Mary, but I’m not Mary, I’m a different person and if K. Michelle ever call me or anybody for that matter, for advice, I would absolutely give it to them.

ummmm..who told kisha she could sing ....

She could have easily reached out to Mary if she wanted her help. Would it have been nice if Mary reached out to Keyshia? of course but you don't know what Mary was going through at the time. If Keyshia wants success she has to do it for herself. Can't rely on people.

btw, 1st bitches!!!

Anonymous said...

That's just silly. If you needed Mary's help ask for it. People can't barge in on your life. You wanted to do lunch-call her. If you wanted some advise-call her. Don't dump on people because you didn't get what you thought you shuold've gotten from them.

Mary has her own issues, schedules, needs. Just maybe, you were not at the forefront of her thoughts. Were you the only hip/hop gal on the scene. Are there not many of you out there at any given time. SO what's special about you. I have to admit , I wouldn't know one song you sang. I am decidely old school, 60's, 70's and some 80's music. So you could be the bomb, and Mary should have stepped to you- I don't know.

I do know in this fast paced world we have to seek out help if we wanted. Class-money just can't buy it. Class would have dictated you not try to throw Mary under the bus.

That seemed a little bit random. Especially since when Keyshia came out, she was always being compared to Mary. What was she expecting? Is Mary supposed to be the industry advice giver or something? I don't get it.

Anonymous said...

She look's extreamly different!!

Why didn't she reached out to mary when mary was down?

Anonymous said...

Hey dumb ass folks Mary was given help by Mariah, Chaka, Whitney, and so many others but when Keisha wanted to honor Mary, her idol, at a awards ceremony Mary got jealous and had Keisha fired because she felt threatened by her! Mary aint ish! Everyone who came before Mary helped her crack head @ss and Keisha only wanted to honor her at a ceremony and Mary said they were too similar and she did not want her.Sounds like a jealous old ho to me!Mary cried all on Gladys knight saying, "You saved my life," but yet she is mean to little Keisha!

I feel what she's saying. I'm learning the hard way that in life, you have to be selfish. Not selfish as in hurting someone else, but selfish as in making sure you're ok.

Mary probably felt like this chicks and I are crowing to the same audience. I'm not going to teach you how to take me out. Sure, I can be glad to see you do good, but I'm not going to teach you how to out do me. And that's not a crab in a barrel attitude.

She'll be ok though. Can she stake singing lessons?

Anonymous said...

I AGREE WITH 9:57AM!!!!!

Anonymous said...

I don't think she wanted Mary to teach her how to sing, but show her the ropes or give her the inside scoop that other people didn't or wasn't willing to share with her. There is enough room for everyone; most people can admire more than one artist in a certain genre at a time.

Keyshia got a nose job. And why would Mary help her or advise her, she is coming to knock her out the box, when it boiled down to it she is the competition, not that she had a chance Mary made her mark and is not to concerned about the next bitches.

She's been talking shit about Mary since day 1. If I was Mary I wouldn't fuck with her ass either.

@9:57
Thank you, although I would have put it a little differently. I think most people are missing the point. Keyshia is not asking for a handout, but instead what she is referring to is a little sisterhood and guidance, which is absolutely what many younger artists need and crave when first starting out. Mary had that from the old school divas that she was compared to and whose songs she covered throughout her entire career - Aretha, Chaka, and others were classy enough to lend that guidance and encouragement. We all saw how Whitney Houston did the same thing for younger artists who idolized her - Brandy, Monica, Alicia Keys, Kelly Price, etc. the list goes on. They all spoke about her generous spirit and what a great legacy to leave behind.

Granted, Mary didn't owe Keyshia a thing, but a kind gesture can go a long way especially from someone who you admire so much. It was no secret how much Keyshia looked up to Mary and the classy thing to do would have been to call up the younger sister and offer that encouragement. Instead, Mary felt threatened and jealous by a younger artist. She also didn't like the comparisons that came almost immediately when Keyshia hit the scene. Maybe it's a generational thing - I don't know, but I feel Keyshia on this one. It's about paying it forward.

Keyshia i wish you luck in the business i like a hand full of your songs' but you will "Never" be on the same level as Mary J. Blige.

What's the 411!

Good luck with your new album and reality show but don't be so snotty to your fans they make you and your fans will break you that's some advice from Tracy!

Ms. Lee said...

I never knew Mary "owed" Keyshia anything.

Anonymous said...

If Mary was secure in her place as the Queen of Hip Hop Soul, she wouldn't have hesitated to show Keyshia the ropes. In fact, she probably would have recorded a song with her and it probably would have been off the chain. Instead, Mary comes off as the same broken, low self-esteem, catty girl from the projects that she is, except 20 years older. If she knew her own power, she would gladly share some of her shine and wisdom, but she didn't and it makes her look classless. What if Aretha, Whitney, Gladys and Chaka had turned their backs on her?

Anonymous said...

9:57am I agree. Each one, teach one. Every other community celebrates their own.. Why do we have the "I got mine, get urs" attitude. There is enough room in that lousy industry for everyone. Hell even fashion designers celebrate the success of each other. At the end of the day everyone is eating. jeesh

Anonymous said...

@ 10:13 Actually there is not enough room for everyone. If thats the case everyone would be selling records and doing big. Only a few people really make money being an artist. There are alot that come and go. Everyone can be admired by whoever, but only so many can get they bills paid.

Anonymous said...

Damn! Keyshia looks hard as hell and she is not even 30. She looks rehab ready.

Anonymous said...

She got her teeth done. Everybody gets veneers nowadays. I'm just glad they fit her mouth, unlike Brandy and TI.

keyshia just has a bitterness and clearly a chip on her shoulder...it just comes thru in every interview and/or performance....such a pretty girl....such a NASTY attitude! i think its why she cant break through and be greater...that STANKNESS just lingers...she need to let go...

Anonymous said...

How amazing it is that Mary J. Blige is being attacked. First of all, everyone knows that Keyshia Cole's attitude is unbearable, hence the REAL reason Manny quit. He didn't get fired contrary to what you all may think.

KEYSHIA NEEDS TO STOP IT. SHE KNOWS DAMN WELL SHE HAD THE MOST BITCHY ATTITUDE IN THE WORLD WHICH IS WHY EVEN MONICA DOESN'T DEAL WITH HER ANYMORE. KEYSHIA YOU CAN'T BE A TOTAL BITCH & EXPECT PEOPLE TO WANT TO REACH OUT TO YOU. PLUS MARY WAS PROBABLY SOMEWHERE HIGH OR DRUNK.

I have a industry friend who tried to help four people in the industry, they all shitted on her, were ungrateful, talked shit and one of the people tried to sabotage a industry connection she had. She vowed never to try and help anyone else. I don't blame mjb.

@11:08 I've tried to help blacks, they have a sense of entitlement, natural born haters who will stab u in the back but they act like, since we both black, u owe me, bs. They are so envious and resentful, they are worse than racists, trying to manipulate u and get your job although u helped get them in. They can't even carry on a decent conversation, they women talk about baby drama and the men talk about hoes. This generation is disgraceful and uneducated with their hand out and black men kill each other daily or they locked up. The women are pregnant on welfare. That's there aspirations, I'm not anti black, I'm anti thug and refuse to deal with them. Good for Mary, why help the competition, like the rest of blacks, she would have been ungrateful talking mad shit. Losers.

11:22, This is kind of off topic, but I feel you on the Black "issue". I was on Twitter yesterday and so many of my Black followers were bragging about the iPhone 5 and how they're going to get it because it's a "status symbol". I think too many of us are caught up on material things and carnal desires. When my followers aren't discussing material things, the men are discussing "hoes", "fucking" and "fat asses", while the women are doing everything they can to get a "fat ass", a few packs of weave and to be taken out on this new "$500 date".

Bitch you entered a highly competitive field to earn your living in, not the girl scouts! What did you want, for her to come over and braid your weave and make friendship bracelets? You MUST be crazy! Ain't no friends in this game and that's the best lesson she could've taught you!

Now go find your mama's sharp pointy shoulder to cry on!

@11:27, I don't mean to sound snobby but I only associate with educational blacks, and yeah, all categories got drama but the thugs got it on lockdown, we hate each other, if the people I helped would have been any other race I wouldn't have been punished. I can see why well to do blacks don't associate with thugs, only race that loves thugs, crime, out of wedlock and the trifling lifestyle. Shameful, line up for jordans but want line up to learn a trade. I love obama but he takes the black vote for granted and caters to Latino's and gays, he don't even bother with blacks. This race is lost.

As for Keyshia, I understand her point but NO one, including Mary is obligated to reach back and give advice. Yes, it would have been great and a great ending to the story...but in the end - no one is obligated.

By the way...I can see a Keyshia and K. Michelle song coming a mile away AND BELIEVE ME ... I CAN WAIT.

Anonymous said...

@10:53 am I agree w/ you, didn't she even have beef w/ Monica and lil kim over a record? Anyway you can never please ppl - some ppl get offended and think you are arrogant if you try to help them and some ppl think you are supposed to assume they need you. That is why I don't care what ppl think and do what I feel is right cuz if you let ppl's opinion rule you, there will never be satisifaction --Keisha just needs to think God she made it this far and help who SHE can she shouldn't have shaded Mary like that cuz she doesn't seem like that type of person and I don't think K.Michelle would like that stmnt either b/c she has been in the game for a minute

Anonymous said...

lol @ 11:44 I guess they meant she only associates with black teachers I can wait for that sore throat sounding screaming and hollering too

Keisha and K Michelle look alike.

Anonymous said...

Maybe because she came in the game talking about how she's going to be the next Mary J Blige. I wouldn't help someone who is openly trying to come for my spot either. Or maybe Mary just don't like your ass plain and simple. Let's not forget how nasty KC attitude was when she was new in the game. I saw an interview she did on YouTube where she dissed Janet Jackson for no reason. They asked her did she listen to Janet Jackson growing up and her response was "who?!..." then she went on to say nope I dont listen to her music, like she was above Janet or something. Ever since I saw that interview I havent liked her

Anonymous said...

Mary hates that people try to play her like an old school vet. She loves the Queen title but she wants people to still reconize her as young and very much so still in the game. I remember when a younger very talented singer wanted to remake a song from My Life. Mary was furious! She didnt want to be played like she was 20yrs older than the new girls and she felt like remakes of her record would make people feel like she was old.Keyshia is not the best singer but she's an awesome writer and that's where the money is. Her attitude came because she was treated bad and mocked for not having the best voice by her peers. Her reaction was that of a young girl.Mary is our Queen but she gets jealousy spirts like how she flipped out on Faith after Faith arranged all of the vocals and gave her that hot sound on My Life because she did all the background vocals. Mary was recently mad at Missy for having Monica do the Anything song. What KC is saying is not a lie. Yes she did get into it with Lil Kim because Kim was mad she used Nicki on a song. KC told Kim I work with everybody and I helped you and Missy just like yall helped me. Her and Missy have made up and move on.

Anonymous said...

What she is trying to say is that black people are your worst enemies at work. Not all of them. But, the ones that are trying to be cool with you. They wonder why i chill with every other race at work other then them. You don't have to talk about people with them. They will make stuff up.

Bee Gee said...

Maybe we should stop puttin' these negroes on such pedestals like "Queen of Hip-Hop Soul" then? I think Mary was seriously overrated for a good part of her career, but I charge it to that New York state of mind where everything Hip Hop is king/queen in NYC (not throwin' shade at all).

Not sure why Cole felt led to name-drop Mary, but to each his own. I think Mary paved certain roads for youngins like Cole whether she said a word to em or not..

Anonymous said...

Mary doesn't owe her shit and Mary helped tons of artists when she was younger to the point of singing damn near for free on other artists cuts some of them getting amnesia and not returning the favor when she needed them. Key left a lot of people behind so she has no room to talk about how someone should help others.

Anonymous said...

she shouldn't have called mary out in public like that. she should have said she wished she'd had more of an opportunity to learn about the business from mary or would love to have mary share her own stories or something like that. in that case, she would not have closed the door on that relationship the way she did. and did she actually reach out to mary or not? if not, then no right to feel bad.

Yes. And maybe we should look at these people for what they truly are: ENTERTAINERS. Nothing more. Nothing less. Not to be idealized, idolized, adored, or exalted. Because outside of their jobs they are human beings as well.

Anonymous said...

I don't see anything wrong with what Keysia said. I think some people are being a little harsh on her. Yes, she's a little rough around the edges and may have an attitude but she's human and she's real. Not everyone can have a robotic plastered smile in their face 24/7 like Beyonce. Sheesh, you people complain when they smile too much and come off too nice and complain when they are hard and cold. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Maybe if Mary reached out to her she coukd've given her some tips on media training. They're both fr the hood and have the same attitudes, it's just that MJB has been trained over the years. There are a lot of woman who are fans of hers and carry the same disposition. I don't think all the shade in here is warranted. Mary was her idol and Mary knew this chick loved her. Can't stand an insecure diva. Whitney was never threatened by younger up and coming artist. Clearly Mary was and is. After 40 you'd think she'd be confident in her talent. Smh

Anonymous said...

No, Mary doesn't owe Keyshia or anybody else anything, BUT it would have been nice for Mary to "pay it forward" & give Keyshia some advice, especially since Keyshia expressed her admiration for Mary ... Keyshia & Mary's "hard-knocked" life pretty mirrored each other & they most def mirrored each other when it came to the kind of songs they would sing, even style & attitude & it would have been nice for the veteran, Mary to give/offer "advice" to the then newcomer, Keyshia ... Mary saw Keyshia & it was like looking in the mirror & she was not about let her "mini-me" STEAL her spot (in her mind away) ... yeah Mary's insecurity was showing a lil' bit back then!!!

Anonymous said...

Mary should have showed her how to land a crispy chicken, mc patties, 3 cheeses, wrapped up in ahhhh tasty tortilla deal *shrugs*

Why is she blaming this all on MJB? There are plenty of other singers who could've given her advice. C'mon Keysh.......be real!

Anonymous said...

Maybe Mary didnt feel like helping Keyshia. Does Mary get a say in who she does or doesn't mentor. Mary had no problem reaching out to other young artist like Jasmine Sulivan. Maybe she felt a certain type of way about Keyshia and her nasty attitude. Ask anyone in the industry Mary is real ,Mariah, Whitney, Aretha all the greats before her have said so, maybe she just wasn't feeling Keyshia as an artist or as a person she has that right you know.

Anonymous said...

It's clear by most of the comments that almost no one clicked on the video to actually HEAR what she said and how she said it.

Anonymous said...

Keisha looks a mess with that skunk on her head...never have tough she was much in the look department! Just another below average hood bird!

Anonymous said...

I can't stand this ghetto bird. No one owes you anything. Sit down somewhere!

First off, Keyshia is a phony snake bitch. When she first came in the game she was gunning for Mary. Ppl were gassing her up telling her she was gonna be "the new MJB" & she ran with that shit. Then her & her management at the time (Manny) were trying to get in contact with Mary's old management & ppl that worked with Mary early in her career. Keyshia was trying to be Mary #2 & Geffen was behind that shit. Remember the song with that Kim Clone bitch Nicki, Keyshia was going at Mary sideways & then tried to play it off when everything fell apart for her. After the song dropped & she flopped she did a Ustream & her exact words were: " I want to apoligize for trying to start trouble". She didn't say MJB's name but everybody knew who she was talking to.

Second, Mary is NOT insecure or jealous of any of the female singers. She always gives props to the other singers ie; Bey, Alicia, Rhi, MiMi etc, etc. Mary has built a solid, consistent 20yr career & she did not come in the industry disrespecting the women before her. Keyshia is just mad because she's a wannabe who aint gon be. Trust & believe Mary knows she is a snake, her attitude is real stink & she hasn't done a damn thing in the industry like Mary. Lesson 101 from MJB : Build your own fucking career. When you accomplish that, this is what you will get in return.

55 Million ablums sold
15 million singles sold
8 multi platinum albums
9 Grammys
10 Billboards
4 American Music awards
BET Wins
MTV Wins
Soul Train Wins
VIBE Legends Award
ASCAP awards (4)
Worlds Music Legends Award from London
Many Endorsements
Source Awards
Get honorned by the industry left, right & sideways
FiFi awards (2 of her perfumes)
Lady of Soul awards (3)
NAACP awards (6)
Record breaking first wk sales (The Breakthrough) (Growing Pains)

So again Mary was never jealous or insecure about Keyshia Flop. This bitch has been coming sideways at Mary for a long time & this new interview shows how she is pressed. Mary has built her legacy step by step, Keyshia Clone needs to build hers step by step.

That's MJB's advice & stop being a snake behind the scenes.

I grew up when Mary became popular and she was a diva. For example, she did not like Faith because she felt diddy was trying to replicate Mary (blonde hair and same sound), yet Etta James and T-Boz had blonde hair. Mary is insecure and wants to be in the arena all alone as the Queen of Hip-hop Soul. I personally couldn't bring myself to like her music because her "kiss my ring" attitude was disgusting. I remember she threatened to punch out Veronica Webb during an interview all because Veronica asked her a personal question.

Years later, the chickens coming home to roost, and ironically, with a Bk chicken sandwich commercial. One thing Mary hates is when the public and the media talk bad about her. She cannot handle bad publicity and critiques. I'm not hating on Mary, it took me years to get past her stink-box attitude and listen to her songs, but this is from observing her through the years because Mary's brand was forced down my throat the during the 90's. Besides, waiting for a Sade album is like waiting for Halley's comet, such few pickings.

If she didn't or doesn't like the way her career is going or has gone so far, maybe she should have sought out different mentors or chosen another career path. Is she doing what she's doing because she wants to or because she has to?

Why should anyone else be concerned about her career or relationship with Mary when they have their own career and professional relationships to be concerned with? Her checks definitely don't come to my household and I certainly don't waste my hard earned money on either of them. Please! Upset about not having Mary as a mentor? Perhaps she should consider not having her dumb ass as a mentor a blessing rather than a curse.

Mary should NOT advise phony, snake bitches like Keyshia Flop. She has built her career & legacy. Why can't Keyshia do the same. It's funny how alot of the younger singers give Mary props & look up to her. Why is Keyshia having such a problem?

Another point, Mary had NO problem reaching out to Jasmine Sullivan (who is a vocal powerhouse) herself. Again Keyshia is phony. Was she looking for Mary's advice whe she "had" a little buzz in the beginning? *I'll wait*

Mary is the Queen of Hip Hop Soul. Period

Her consistent 20yr career speaks volumes. Keyshia better go find hers.

Once again Keyshia is a wannabe who aint gon be. That's her real motive behind this shit that she's doing. Doesn't she have a new album coming out soon. What a coincedence

Again was she looking for Mary to reach out to her 6 months ago, how about a yr ago? When she first had a little buzz in the very beginning was she looking for Mary's advice then? *I'm still waiting*

Mary is notorious for being jealous of female up and comers, especially girls who have either admired her coming up or might have gotten some sort of comparison to her. She single handedly put the slow kill aka limbo on a good friend of mine's record deal back when MCA was still around. She saw my friend as a threat. So, good on Keyshia for speaking up and deciding to turn over a new leaf. Trust me, Mary deserves all the negative press and image perception she's been getting lately.
