Days after Mariah Carey gave birth she was reported to the Department of Child and Family Services for drinking beer and taking pain medication while breastfeeding her twins [click here if you missed that].
The social worker who reported Mariah was fired shortly after and now she's suing for wrongful termination...
Mela Ferrer claims she was pressured to cover up the incident to protect Mariah's image and when she refused she was fired.
In a lawsuit that does not mention Mariah Carey by name, Mela, who was working at the Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center on a temporary assignment when Mariah gave birth, claims she was fired because the hospital was worried that the negative press would deter other celebrities from using their facility.
Mela says she was told the official cause of her termination was failure to follow protocol by consulting with the social work supervisor before filing her report, but Mela insists no such protocol was in place at the time.
68 year old Mela is seeking punitive damages for wrongful termination, violation of several state laws, breach of confidentiality and/or privacy, defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and age discrimination.

People aren't just "fired" anymore in the age of get-rich-quick lawsuits. Chances are this woman had a history of violations and this was just the last straw/an excuse to let her go.
This makes me believe Mela tried to make a name for herself and a big-ta-do out of nothing. She went to the authorities while Mariah was in a HOSPITAL. I'm sure her HUSBAND, DOCTORS and NURSES could have checked Mariah appropriately if they felt her behavior was out of line. Would she have reported a Jane-next-door to the state? Doubt it. Mela got fired for being underhanded and manipulative and her lawsuit using the no protocol defense is good proof. Just like a manipulator to find a loop-hole to justify her wrongdoing. She couldn't get her fame one way, she'll get it another.
I agree with 2:52PM - She had to do something else to get fired - they wouldn't blatantly fire her for something like this because they know that they'd get sued. I think she's just trying to get her 15 minutes/$15 million.

Don't social workers typically need tons of documentation to be able to have children removed from the home?
As other people have said, Mariah was still in the hospital when she reported this. You would think the social worker could get evidence from the hospital, or if they refused, she could have gotten a court order for Mariah's medical records and drug orders to be looked at.
If Mariah was drinking and drugging while she was nursing the twins, the first step to protect the kids would be to stop her from breastfeeding them, and investigate further.
This is the main reason why people won't report any wrong doings or illegal activities of people with money and power. They can end up losing their livelihood or life. But if something horrible would have happened to Mimi and/or her twins because of Mimi's actions and this woman didn't report it, people would say she should've said something beforehand. Then rightfully so she should be fired on the spot.
It's more to this story that is being reported and this social worker is just trying to get something for nothing.

I thought the case worker cleared Mariah of the allegations, not she was the one who made the initial report. Mariah and the hospital are only mad because the caseworker followed through in usual fashion as she should have, documenting her findings, filling out the paperwork.....even if she found the allegations false. They wanted her to shred the paper work as if nothing happened.

Beer stimulates milk production. It's because of the barley I think. I drank a lot of it after I gave birth. It was non-alcoholic; maybe Mariah's was too. She's not an alcoholic. She just wanted to produce enough milk for her babies. Geez people.

First of all, California is an "at will" state meaning they can fire you "at will" or without reason or explanation and still stand a chance in court in a wrongfully termination suit! They can say they fired you for any reason (ie you were late too many times, you didn't take your lunch breaks he ce breaking labor laws or any little silly be reason) and as long as they have proof, you will win and everyone makes mistakes somewhere that can be used against you at work.
Also, nowhere in the report does it say that Mariah was in the hospital when this report was submitted! The social worker might have done a home visit and witnessed the behavior! If Mariah showed up to the hospital with even trace amounts of alcohol in her system before her c-section ( yes, they check and don't need your consent to do so) then a follow-up visit is a state mandated! This woman was just doing her job.

First of all California is not a "at will" state most position such as social workers are required to be with an union any state or county employee. Now they have "at will" positions. Social Workers are Mandated Reporters which means if the Social Worker felt they children were in danger she is required by law to report Mariah celebrity or not. It is unbelievable how ridiculous some of these statements are. No the Social Worker should not have minded her business. She was doing her job and believe it or not whether she wins or not the labor laws if not approached carefully in the state of california she will win.

Wow, there is much talk & little knowlege here. After twin births/c sections, you are allowed to have pain meds- and breastfeed! It's major surgery & breastfeeding is always encouraged to get the mothers uterus to contract to normal The benefits of the milk are to protect the child. Only pain med that are safe are given nursing mothers.
