Lauryn Hill Apologizes to Fans in Chicago

The day after her concert in Chicago Lauryn Hill publicly apologized to fans and blamed her poor performance on technical difficulties, but that's not what I heard...

First of all Nas opened for Lauryn but Ms. Hill didn't go on until 11:30pm, more than an hour after Nas finished his set.

When Lauryn finally took the stage she rambled and ranted and half sang half spoke her songs so quickly the band couldn't keep up with her.

Lauryn also stopped and started songs over and over again and would repeat certain lyrics in a disturbing loop before moving on to the next verse.

In the end many fans walked out in dismay.

The Lauryn we all loved died years ago. Now it's this thing running around with a similar voice and a "shell of her former self" look. I'm jus gonna download "Mis-Education" and keep it moving.

What the hell is wrong with her. More and more I am finding it hard to defend her.

I feel for her b/c she's clearly mentally in need of care...with that said...I've never...ever understood the major appeal to her music...so in a way...i just feel like, what do ou expect from her, really. She had, as far as I know, two CD's (I could be wrong, i don't follow her music)...she's being expected to perform when she's not really into it anymore...I couldn't do it...if I pa to see ou in concert, ya ass better perform like ou want my money...I wish her the best tho...

Funny thing is everything is recorded these days. Why not post a video to support what you just wrote. Lauryn took the stage an hour after Nas left the stage. They had to break down the band for Nas and set up Lauryn's band. The change over was prolonged a bit due to technical problems. I notice you only report on Lauryn when something goes wrong. Lauryn has been all over the world and received rave reviews. Stop trying so hard to tear this lady down. Lauryn has not performed her music like it is on the CD for over a decade. Lauryn is an amazing artist not cut and paste but Amazing.

LMAO!!!!! My friends tried to get me to buy tickets to this shit and I'm so glad I didn't. They were pissed. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!! I don't know why anyone would expect anything different.

How many times does she expect people to put up with this bs. I went to see her and she did the same thing. Came on stage (after OVER an hour late) rushing through songs and sounding / looking crazy. Saying "I'm sorry" would be well received if she didn't let this type of mess happen so often. But, because it does - I feel like she just doesn't give a damn anymore. THATBOYGOTHERHEADSPINNING. I'M JUST SAYING....

In reading all these negative comments I realized that misery, and poverty of substance really Does Love Company. We live in a world where people will kick you even when you down. Dang the economy is really bad because you can tell who is broke and unhappy and want others to be unhappy as well. Where are the positive people that like to encourage folks instead of laugh while their down. Crabs in a bucket. You can only spew out hate when you unhappy. So what she made several mistakes. Some of you dont even know you mothers or fathers. They made mistakes. Some of you havent talked to your own family and lost best friends and lovers because of your mistakes. Time and time again you failed but you didnt want people laughing and pointing. So why do you do it? Its because Lauren makes you feel better when she messes up huh?

Phuck what you heard - Lauryn is amazing.

I wish this washed up bitch would just go away...a friend of mine worked with her in the studio and she was really rude to everyone and would only be addressed as Ms. Hill....I guess you reap what you sow...

I really want to see Lauryn win. I honestly do. I have loved her music since her days with the Fugees. HOWEVER, this type of behavior has been ongoing in multiple cities. Everybody is not lying (or hating as some would say) on her. Haters don't buy tickets to your show!

But when you repeatedly show up HOURS late to a performance and give a half azzed effort once up there, then yes people are going to complain. She says that there are technical difficulties and things going on backstage that we (the fans) are not aware of. You're right! And we shouldn't be aware of them. That's YOUR JOB! It's your job to ensure that your crew has a system in place where they can breakdown and set up the new instruments in such a way that it doesn't waste hours of time. If your crew, sound people, musicians, managers, etc are the cause of your seeming total disregard for your fans and their time and money, then perhaps you need to make some personnel changes. My job would.

Just one more example of how the world can love you oh so much while you're up and then assist in tearing you to pieces when you're down. People are so hateful. Losing Whitney should have opened the eyes of so many people. We lost one of the greatest and people still don't see how much the world added to her sorrows.

Seeing an ongoing pattern like this doesn't say to me she's a diva or doesn't love her fans. It tells me there is a serious problem and that more than anything else we need to be voicing our love and appreciation of her as an artist and person. That's what she needs to see and hear from people. That's what makes you pull yourself together and get the help that you need.

I LOVED HER VOICE AND HER STYLE.TRULY ONE OF A KIND.REAL TALK.

That is not a public apology. It is a bloody Tweet. Please don't try to make it appear as if she held some major TV network press conference like FEMA or Kobe Bryant or Earvin Johnson or Eric Holder. This uber sensationalization of a text message is not necessary (a Tweet is nothing but a text message with a trade name). She had yet another bad day. Apparently she's had plenty of them throughout her career. So what? Who hasn't? If people want to keep spending money and taking chances on whether they'll be entertained or disappointed by her then so be it. The American economy could use the money. I hope Nas at lease gave them their money's worth. If this keeps up maybe he needs to look into touring with someone else. Gotta pay that child support somehow.

I'm with 10:45 and 10:46

Y'all can keep your tired ass, washed up pop tarts. I will keep checking for MS. HILL. We all have issues, hers happens to be spread across the entire media for everyone to comment on. Stop trying to break this woman down. Who knows what she is going through?

Y'all didn't believe Dave Chappelle when he told you the industry is evil. Well, it is and Lauryn tried to (warn) tell you too. Who knows what kinds of negativity and demons that she is dealing with? She is also a mother who will be headed to jail soon, so it is quite obvious that there are some personal problems that are troubling her as well. Give that bullshit a rest. Some of y'all love to tear black women down and the saddest part is that 99% of you ARE BLACK WOMEN!!! WOW - GO FIGURE..

Keep ya hesd up MS. HILL..you do have plenty of fans left who love you and what you stand for. Truth. They always call the REALEST ones crazy.

As a BLACK WOMAN I am not holding Ms. Hill to any greater or lesser standard than I would an artist of any other ethnicity. This is her JOB, that she CHOSE! No one is making her tour, she has chosen to do so. It is obvious that people still love her and support her. If they didn't, they wouldn't purchase her tickets.

However, when you CONSTANTLY receive negative reviews due to late arrivals and half-hearted performances then prehaps it's time to take a step back. Stop trying to blame fans for expecting their money's worth from a woman that obviously needs the money. Ms Hill could have chosen any career path of her liking during her hiatus from music, but she chose to return to the mic. Since that's her decision, then do the work and top blaming the fans for not letting you make it with half-azzed performances.

I say this as a fan that purchased tickets here in Houston TWICE, and both times Lauryn left fans waiting for HOURS while making no apology for doing so.

@10:45, 10:46, 11:10 and 12:01 - We didn't land on Plymouth Rock....Plymouth Rock landed on us! For those who don't understand....she CHOOSE this profession - if she didn't want to be a performer then DON'T BE ONE. If it makes me a hater to say I want what I pay for then call me a hater. It's only common sense.

Hell, I love her music too but not so much to be disrespected continuously from city to city by showing up hours late and rushing through songs. You're flat out slapping my ass in the face without so much of a 'thank you' for supporting me through my ups and downs and 'trying to come back' stages of her profession.

Giving our hard earned dollars to see her perform - anticipating a great venue and being constantly let down...I don't understand how it's OUR fault and how we're being trashed and considered to be the crabs in the barrel. Get the freak outta here with that bs. When you want more you'll get more and I'm not wasting no more time, money or energy or Ms. Hill who's trying to get it together. ONTOTHENEXT. Her time has come and gone and she had a great run. NEXT.

@2:01

Sadly, that theory can be said about any so-called "artist" out there. At least those artists act like they give a damn, I suppose.

9:35 got it right. In DC she was way more connected to the audience than Nas, and she sounded better than ever. I saw her twice this year and, believe it or not, there were no signs of this craziness we always read about. Not saying she's the same old Lauryn from '97, but why should she be?
I think calling her crazy is just the cool and sensational thing to do, unfortunately. Not all (bloggers) critics have the capacity to think critically about art. Ironically, some commenters just post about an artist to feel like they have an audience, even though they don't have a message.

Tickets to a concert is and can be very expensive. But as much as I love Ms. Hill, I simply can't afford to waste my time and especially my money. This doesn't mean that I no longer support her, her music and her life. I can relate very well being a blk woman myself always striving to be better and do better. I'll just have to wait until the odds are better for me to enjoy my money that I spend to see her.
With that said, I will continue to pray for her.
