Lenny Kravitz Snags Marvin Gaye Role

Rocker Lenny Kravitz snags the coveted role of Marvin Gaye in a film about the Motown legend's tragic final years...

The London production staring Lenny Kravitz will focus on the time Marvin Gaye spent in Belgium in 1981 drying out from alcohol and drug addiction.

Marvin's second and final wife, Janis Gaye, has said she is 'very skeptical' about the new project.

Thats like Keyshia Cole singing at the Cotton Club or Wesley Snipes getting a tattoo...just wont work..smh! damn shame

He can sing but I don't see Marvin in him.

Mo Chestnut shoulda got a shot...or Mos Def.

NO. I love Lenny but he is too light skin to play Marvin. I'm sick of Hollywood getting light skin people and painting them in blackface to play darkskin characters. There are many good actors out there who resemble Marvin's color who need to be given a chance.

What the whole fuck??? Are they serious with this choice? This is just as off the wall as Usher portraying Marvin Gaye on that now defunct show, American Dreams. Was there no one else?

Mos Def! Love Lenny to pieces, but he should sit this one out...

I wonder if this movie will cover the molestation and Marvin's love for young girls.
And will it cover his father's gay behavior and his strange affection of love from his mother. What about the son that was birthed by a niece of that Gordy wife who was barren.

Hi Sane!

"Marvin's second and final wife, Janis Gaye, has said she is 'very skeptical' about the new project."

She meant to say it's not enough money on the table yet to fill her pockets.

I thought Marvins sister was the one protesting a bio-pic because she didn't want it to shade her little side production play she's been producing about his life. And not only did she want any family dirt revealed either.

Marvin is by far my favorite artist of all time. I like Lenny but I think he needs to sit this one out. Why do they need to do a Marvin movie anyway?

@1:08 I agree I can see Maxwell before Lenny

TruthBeTold said...

i can see this

Lenny has acting experience

UM....nope

I thought Jesse Martin from Law & Order was playing Marvin Gaye

Anonymous said...

They should have gotten Maxwell. He looks like Marvin

"Marvin's last wife, Janice Gaye, is saying she is very skeptical about Lenny's ability to pull off the part."

Not sure I understand the point of this film, but hollywood loves to focus on the most fucked up and degenerative times of these entertainers' lives in these biopics..

@1:45: I thought the same thing too. I love Lenny but Jesse Martin would have been a better choice..

Check out Marvin Gaye's "Here, My Dear" LP for a good understanding of his life of fuckery. Didn't he meet one of his wives when she was 13 or some nonsense like that. Same as Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis.

Kravitz is too eurocentric looking to play Marvin.
Marvin had these African King look to him. Morris Chestnut would be a better fit.

This choice is almost as bad as Zoe Saldana playing Nina Simone. Why are they picking African-American actors to play roles of people who they look nothing like? I just dont get it.

12:57 please tell me more. I feel the same way about the Teddy P movie. Are they going to talk about his homosexual ways and the men that were in his life. Isn't funny how men that we considered sex symbols are really wanting what women want...a strong hard man ;)

12:45 PM, Chestnut? No way! Jesse L. Martin? YES!

Anonymous said...

The one and only person that can play Marvin Gaye is:

Jesse L Martin.............PERIOD!

@12:57 PM I read Marvin Gaye's biography, "Divided Soul" and it addresses all of the comments in your post. First off, there's no mention of Marvin being molested. Yes, his father was gay. His father was also very jealous and very abusive towards Marvin. This so called 'strange' affection you claim he had for his mother was his safe haven and way of dealing with his abusive father.
The Gordy woman he married was barren and they adopted a son. There's no mention of him impregnating one of the other Gordy women.
He did marry a lady way younger than him, but the way the book described the relationship didn't lead me to believe he had a thing for younger women. He loved Tammi Terrell. After her death, he fell deeper into his drug addiction.

good idea! I used to have a major crush on him way back!

Lenny is a good choice, this is your big break Lenny good luck.

Mo Chestnut is more of a theatre draw than Jesse Martin...Martin is more of a TV / stage actor.
JM looks more like Marvin, tho.
I would watch with either actor JM or Mo C.

Not feeling Lenny for the role. Like that poster said, can the actor at least somewhat resemble the real person? It's Nina Simone all over again.

Carmela Carter said...

Hell no, to Lenny playing Marvin. That choice is defiantly a #fail
And it sucks that our black artists who are legendary and actually possessed talent only get films made about them to show the negatives in their lives. SMH.....why not just make a real film about this man's life. We know the drugs & alcohol were a part of it, but that isn't all he was. I hope this film never sees the light of day.

Isn't he spanish or some shit? Whatever. I say hell to the NO. They stay lightening up my sisters. now the brothas? I just can't.

Quiana said...

Hell to the naw, Lenny sory but NO on this one. Shit Hollyweird can't get shit right to save their lives damn.

Yall trippin...Lenny is an excellent choice and to answer someone's question, Lenny is Black (His mother was Roxy Roker on the Jefferson's the black woman married to the white man Tom) and his father is Jewish. Very much like his Ex Lisa Bonet's background. Lenny has the sex appeal that Marvin commanded on the stage, he can sing and play the piano just as Marvin. Just for these factors alone, he is probably the most talented to play Marvin's bio pic. Lenny claims his Black heritage and I think he is just for the role.

Dgrrl said...

Lenny is the most talented, yes,but Jesse L Martin is perfect!

ThatBKChick said...

Jesse L Martin is a runner....he does favor him and has more acting chops than Lenny @Drrl.....however, when it comes to performing and the whole 9, Lenny still is the man for the job. I feel you though! At Peace!

Lenny is a good choice. Denzel has played the roles of men who were actually much lighter in reality (Malcolm X)and darker (Hurricane Carter) and were nominated for Oscars for both. If the talent is there it can be done and Lenny is a good actor and great musician. I think the Nina Simone biopic is the exception because being dark-skinned was an important part of her story. Zoe's makeup looked horrible and borderline "blackface".

I don't think Lenny is such a bad choice. Yes, he is lighter skinned than Marvin, but his talent as an actor AND as a musician somewhat balances it out. They don't look so dissimilar...there's a vibe in common or something. We could maybe argue for Some other actors, but it's ok. That Nina Simone shit on the other hand...

Anonymous said...

@Jazz, I agree. Mos Def would be good. Lenny Kravitz is too light and there are plenty of men who would be a better fit.

Anonymous said...

Idc who does it I love love love love me some Marvin Gaye.

Hollywood loves to white wash blacks. Hence biracials taking all of the roles smh.

I'd choose Kravitz over Maxwell, but Martin would be my first choice. Marvin' life was a mess whoever, plays him. A piping hot cup of special blend and brew of Marvin Gaye tea can be found here:

Stick out your pinky finger and enjoy a cup!

Lenny Kravitz is a white man with brown skin...you are what you father is.....Num 1:18 And they assembled all the congregation together on the first [day] of the second month, and they declared their pedigrees after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, by their polls.
Niggers will accept anything ...even letting a cracker play them in movies and altering their legacy

@6:55pm. Thanks for your recap of reading that book which fail to reveal the truth to all rumors surrounding my favorite legend. The TRUTH hurts sometimes the best of us.

There's an old video on YouTube of Marvin & his father which shows how flamboyant his dad was. I've read somewhere he and his Moms relationship was thought to have been one of incest like. Moms was an alcoholic too.

too bad the book didn't really address the rumors around that adopted child, however Wikipedia did. Much as we love Marvin, he & R. Kelly had something in common we all try to ignore. His fans and the author of the book you read are all in denial of the FACT that Marvin screwed with young underage girls.

Just google Marvin's real bio & it may shock you. His sister knows the family dark secrets, that's why she's been so against any bio pic , despite of her own little chitterlings strut production of Marvin's life she's been filling her pockets with.

Geese! Marvin's life was a hurricane . Who knew he had sex with a young niece of his wife, sister of Berry Gordy, Anna & then adopt the child. Strange.

Who knew later his second exWife started dating Rick James...

"“We need to talk as men. As long as you are with her, you need to take care of her.”
— Marvin to Rick James about Janis Gaye prior to accepting his Grammy Award for “Sexual Healing”, 1983 (according to Zeola Gaye in her book, “My Brother, Marvin”)
