The London Times reports
Beyoncé did not sing the national anthem live at President Obama’s inauguration.
Millions of viewers around the world were stunned by the singer’s spectacular rendition of the anthem but The Times has learnt that she was lip-syncing to a pre-recorded backing track.
A spokeswoman for the Marine Corp Band said ti was standard procedure to record a backing track and Beyonce decided shortly before her performance to rely on the studio verserion rather than risk singing it live on the Capital.

No...not everyone in the industry uses a backing track. There are singers who still stand on stage flat foot and sing without any assistance. Most of the entertainers using backing tracks are those who are dancing while singing or entertainers who have suspect voices anyway. In a outside stadium type setting (one not built for performances) it's best for an entertainer to use a backing track because the speakers and acoustics are not very good. Their voice ends up bouncing off of every piece of metal in the area.

Yeah, it makes sense, because you wouldn't need sheet music to rehearse singing for a live band. You need the live band everytime. Even a live band isn't completely consistent with every run, because since it's live, it's open to slight variability because humans are not machines. So that was a clue in hindsight.

I was watching parts of that the other day. I am not a big Diana Ross fan. I think she did the other Supremes dirty but I'll have to say I was impressed by that concert. How she handled herself on stage with the crowd and her performances. It showed you Diana was willing to be vulnerable because that concert was no where near perfect but her ability to pull through showed that she was Boss.

Yeah I doubt she could read sheet music too--I saw that somewhere that she can't. But there were other pics of her with headphones with a couple of the Marines in the background with no instruments. But the fact remains that it is pointless to listen to anything recorded if you're going to sing live. I know this because I'm a modern dancer, and whenever we hear we have to perform with a live band we scowl because no matter how many times you get coordinate the movement to the musical cues, when it comes closer to the performance you have to keep rehearsing with the band and abandon the track for this very reason.
Beyonce is a performer and knows what each situation would entail. She's used to her own band. She didn't want to take the risk in performing live with another band and make an error. So she played it safe and used the recorded track but still wanted to get the same accolades for performing live, so she pulled the earpiece.
There was a disadvantage in each situation. She was simply trying to have her cake and eat it too. But she didn't realize that was the biggest risk because the public is not stupid and now is getting bad publicity for that decision.
I know people think that most of us are hating on Bey but it's just gotten to be too overwhelming with her shenanigans. Beyonce can sing and she can dance. Bey is not the best singer or the best dancer. I would say she's a pretty good performer and she puts on a great show. What's annoying is that she wants to be more than what she is. I'm all for having a goal but you can't be doing theatrics while singing like you're belting when you're not even singing. I'm not saying be stiff. Even if she was actually singing live her moments were waaaaaaaay over the top for even the track. After I finished watching it I was just sort of confused like wtf did I just witness from an average vocal performance but movements like she was tearing it up. I'm just thinking there were so many other talented singers that could have benefited from that appearance that would have done a better backing track and or live performance.

I'd have to agree I did choral and solo competitions in school and we would generally have an accompanist for every rehearsal other than when I would practice at home alone. It wouldn't be a good idea to rehears with a tape and then try to show up for the day of the performance and think you'll have your stuff together. I don't know her schedule but for something so important she should have made time.

Say what you want about Michael Jackson. Yes he lip synced during his Dangerous and History tours. No MJ didn't write all of his songs. MJ didn't create all of the dances that are attributed to him. But you know what MJ gave writing credit to people who wrote his songs. Most people know that Toto wrote Human Nature and Rod Temperton wrote Thriller. Quincy Jones has given credit to MJ for the songs he wrote himself and brought to the table when he worked with him. MJ didn't create the Moonwalk it was shown to him by Jeffery Daniels but he made sure Jeffery had a part in choreographing many of his performances in the 80s. I think he and the First Lady wanted to have a fresh, young person to represent the generation (18 to 40 year olds) that voted him into office both terms. This can get really complicated when you factor that 1 album could have numerous different song writers. I'll try to keep it simple. This example is based on if there is only 1 or 2 song writer on an entire album
From the sale of a 10-song album, a record label will pay a royalty of 91 cents per album sold, for which 45.5 cents is paid to the songwriter. Co-writers on an album split the 45.5 cents between them.
What I don't know is if they mean Beyonce is only getting 20% and nothing more or if Beyonce is getting the standard % cut based on # of song writers and also requesting 20% on top of that.
It gets more complicated when you factor in publishing because a cut goes there but above is just a basic gist of how it breaks down.

That's the stuff that pisses me off. I won't say it's necessarily "black people" because there are a lot of black artists that don't try to steal writing credit. I think we have a segment of black artists all vying to be the next MJ and think they can make it there by being known as these great song writers that they're not. And like he mentioned Usher and Beyonce both come to mind as two of the biggest offenders. Usher has gotten a big pass on claiming song writing credits for things he didn't write.
It's really disrespectful to the craft of song writing. Before the 90s song writers had a lot more control of music and I think that switch has really hurt the quality of music since then.

The big deal is not exactly that she lip synced. There are several valid reasons she could give for her last minute decision to do so. The biggest deal is yanking out that ear piece as if she was actually singing. I could give her a pass for just acting like she was singing. But going as far as to yank that ear piece which also by doing so makes it seem like the audio and sound people made mistakes was totally wrong to do.

It was so obvious the moment the silence came out of her mouth. I don't see how anyone watching/listening couldn't tell. You could hear the track. You could tell she could tell you could hear the track because she looked a little panicked for a second when you could really hear it.
I tweeted during her performance asking "why is bey singing over a track?" and I got flamed for it! I wasn't hatin' on her. I was just stating my observation, which was correct!
The reality is Beyonce is an amazing performer/entertainer who happens to sing pretty well but not incredibly. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Being an entertainer is hard. But listen to any of Kelly Rowland's recent stuff and you can tell she was carrying Destiny's Child the whole time and behind Michelle, Beyonce was a weak link when it came to voices. My issue is that Beyonce should not have been the go to for this type of performance. Jennifer Hudson? Yes. Kelly Clarkson? Yes. Christina Aguilera? Yes. But Beyonce? No.
Her voice isn't powerful enough to do this as well as any of the other 3 ladies I mentioned could have done. It's clear she was chosen for her popularity and her contributions to the president's campaign. Again, not hating and I can understand why they chose her, but in the end, it was a bit sloppy.
