Toni Braxton Ready to Quit Music?

Toni Braxton was on the air with the Tom Joyner Morning Show and hinted that she was ready to hang up the mic...

Toni told Tom,
"I don’t know if I’m going to be doing anymore music, I’ve said that before in the past but I don’t know…"
"I’m thinking, I’m singing in the movie. Ta-Da. Some gospel a little bit."
"I just don’t know. Maybe I’m mad at music. I don’t know what it is. I can’t, my heart’s not in it right now."

Well, if Toni does decide to quit music, she had a great career with hit singles.

TONI HAS A BEAUTIFUL VOICE!!! PLEASE DONT QUIT!!!! WE NEED REAL MUSIC AND TONI KNOWS HOW TO BRING IT

She's too old to market, although she keeps her body on point...the face, now the Braxton's are a perfect example why black folk should stay the hell away from plastic surgery. Otherwise, it's a smart move. She should look at Broadway musicals, etc. She started making this move after "Kingdom Come", but for whatever reasons she stopped acting in the early 2000's. Well, good for her. Many aging singers turned to Broadway and acting when they become less marketable. She really had no other choices if she wants to keep her lifestyle but to keep on another grind. Good Luck Toni...stay the hell away from the plastic surgeons...you and your family!

Translation: I dont know if I'm going to be doing any more NEW studio records since my last shit sucked. However, I'ma ride this "Unbreak my heart" shit til the muthfuckin wheels fall off. I do bar mitzvah's, Saudi prince private parties, super sweet sixteens and Vegas-style burlesques. Happy endings is extra.

It's a generational problem. Older artists (40+) don't garner the young audience which fuels the music industry. she would do great doing the old school concerts, music festivals, etc. geared to an older demo(40+). the days of longevity in the industry is long gone. she had a great run...

@11:45 Although she has had surgeries. I think most of the cause with her face is because of her having Lupus.

No Toni, don't go... give it another go....if not we have to be stuck with Tamar forever :-(

I'm sure Toni can get checks by endorsing some crappy/useless product, like many artists past their prime.

At least she can look back on a very successful, and interesting, career in music.

I don't think there is anything wrong w/ older artist I just think that Toni's material hasn't been as up to par with her older stuff. The last song she did sucked. I love you or whatever it was called.

I agree that some people do get older and lose appeal but some artist don't put out music that is on par w/ their earlier stuff Most artist want to sit and complain that the industry sucks and people don't buy music. Some of that is true BUT many of them fall off but can't admit it.

Hey Toni you had a good career, I think you should just do grown folks music instead of tryin to be market to the younger people because let's face, it they don't know good music I feel sorry for them but oh well.

@11:45 I agree. She is sick and her meds and illness and reall do a number on your features. I think shes just very tired bc of the lupus. She should reconsider

TruthBeTold said...

it's only fair, music done quit her long time ago

I thought she already had retired...

The problem is that her marketing people are lazy and keep trying to shove sexy siren 25 year-old Toni down our throats like they don't know that 20 years have passed since then, and we have Rihanna, Katy Perry, and other age-appropriate artists for that type of schtick.

The artists these days do not evolve (Beyonce, anyone?) are are stuck in a time warp.

You might not like Madonna, or her music, but what other 50+ artists can you think of (besides the always excellent Sade) who can sell out stadiums and be at the top of the charts after decades in the industry. Madonna and Sade also manage to gain new, younger fans each time they release new music.

Toni, and too many other artists, cannot go the distance.

So true on evolving 12:24.

The decision to go the Las Vegas route basically killed her appeal to the market she still craves attention from. Plus her personal problems did nothing to help her garner positive buzz within the industry. And the final death nail to her career was REALITY TV.

CASE CLOSED

I was done with Toni when she came up with that song about pulling her thong up high.

How do you go from singing chart-topping r&b songs and mainstream power ballads to doing booty songs? That's hustling backwards!

Toni's music is classic, The music industry is wicked and evil! You have to be a sellout and kiss many behinds, I don't think she is willing to do that! They wanted Lauren Hill to abort her baby, because she was at the top of her game and she said No! Listen to some of (Vanity of Vanity six)interviews, she had demons in her bed, she almost died messing around with that demonic business. Only until she turned to Christ was she spared from what Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and countless others could not escape!

GTFOH with that conspiracy shit. Toni's career has flopped because of poor marketing and shitty songs.

trying to be 21 forever is a career killer. After 35 people ain't buying that shit. They know you would rather be home

She needs to do what every other female artist has to do - go niche. She can either turn into a dance diva and be bangin in the clubs or she can go the adult contemporary route ... she has to give up the R&B w/ the barely dressed videos.

Anonymous said...

Cosign @1:40

Toni could be a dance diva, traveling all over the world lipsyching to a 2 minute edit of her dance tracks and getting paid big money for it.

She has already shown that she could be an adult contemporary pop diva. She would probably make a nice comeback doing that again, and end up winning some awards for it, too.

If Madonna, Sade and Barbara Streisand can still make cds then so can she. I know she is sick with lupus so that probably has a lot to do with it too. But, she just needs good producers to make excellent music for her. This is the problem with producers of this generation. Unlike the 80s and even 90s, where producers had respect for older female artists and knew how to market hits for them, this generation does not. They want everything young. It doesn't work that way. If Charlie Wilson can be almost 70 with great songs, making hits with a top 5 cd on Billboard anybody can!

I think that she should try her hand at a broadway show or something in vegas. And she needs to stop letting her ex-husband help her with her career I don't think that he is truly for her. She needs to get with an agent that is fresh and new and ready to get her a really good PAYING job that can help her to take care of her family and to support herself.

I miss the Toni years. U_U I feel so bad for her regarding her illnesses.

she thought she would come back & make a bunch of hits & money aint but handful of artists really getting money in music rite now

She's a great singer still but has been wasting her gift in more recent times chasing chart success. Chart success is only fleeting, ask The Rolling Stones, Diana Ross, Bob Dylan etc. The latter has been known to still make new music but he's well aware it will barely figure as far as the charts are concerned. The best thing she could do now is go indie, where hopefully she can have more autonomy as far as which direction she takes her music in and can concentrate more on the quality of her output instead of using the same templates as Rihanna and Beyonce to recapture commercial success again.

Toni is a good actress, she will make a name for herself as an actress. getting work won't be difficult to get because she's already let Hollywood know that she finds white men attractive, and has openly dated a white man, and is willing to do IR romances. So , she's marketable in their eyes. like Sanaa Lathan said, after she did something new, she had more opportunities in hollywood. plus, tony is marketable, she's not ghetto, or . She'll make a good actress.

NO BOO BOO YOUR MAD AT ALL THE FORECLOSURES!

Child please...you don't need to quit music...music done quit you years ago. Stop calling and texting music...it's ignoring you.

Toni seems very tired because of her illness. You can tell she is not up to anything really. On the reality show she look exhausted, like she had brain fog (probably from the medication she's taking).

It would probably be a good idea for her to get herself a good agent and try to do a TV series, game show, something that would not be so hard on her body. I think her trying to do a Broadway Show every night or Vegas would not work with her current medical condition. She really should retire from music, that industry is just too grimy and she doesn't need that at this point in her life.

[Blind Gossip] Inside a green room at a recent big event. Three women, one man, all celebrities. Several relatives of one of the women were also in the room, along with a child or two, a couple of personal assistants and a few venue staffers. There was going to be a big audience, and nerves should have been riding high.

But the three women were all remarkably calm. Two were sitting quietly chatting with each other. The third woman was texting someone on her cell phone.

However, the man was not as calm. He was pacing back and forth, barking instructions at the third woman.

He became angry that she wasn’t giving him her full attention, and he grabbed the mobile device out of her hands. He discovered that she was texting another man. He started going through all of her texts. His voice started out low and he was swearing: “You mother f*ing b*tch!” As he scrolled through the texts, his voice got louder and louder until he was screaming at her. “YOU MOTHER F*CKING BITCH!!! YOU MOTHER F*CKING BITCH!!!”

The staffers looked nervously at each other, but no one else in the room seemed surprised by the outburst. No one moved to defend the third woman.

Apparently, they didn’t need to, because she jumped up and got in his face and started yelling and swearing right back at the man! She tried to grab the phone back from him, but he pushed her away and continued going through the phone and screaming at her, pushing her away, berating her, and started calling her every derogatory name for a woman in the book.

While it was shocking to the staffers that the two were going at each other so viciously, it was even more shocking to them that the two other women and the relatives and the personal assistants just sat there quietly the whole time, minding their own business through the screaming and the grabbing and the shoving! No one tried to shield the child/ren from what was going on, and no one tried to intervene in the fight. They have known the woman since she was single, and they have known her as part of a couple. The controlling behavior and the physical altercation and the swearing were all apparently just routine to them!

So, the next time you see this couple acting all sweet and loving and trusting and supportive and high class with each other in front of the cameras, know that it’s apparently a whole different story behind the scenes…

Loved TB's music back in the day. I've always thought she was a fabulous singer. If they were going to change the direction of her music genres, they should have directed it towards jazz. I've always thought TB had a jazzy type voice. She and Sade have a similar singing style.
The lesson(s) learned here for black recording artists is to always have another skill set that you can use in the industry besides singing. Secondly, invest your money wisely. For example, Donna Summer didn't die broke. She recorded her new album, Crayons, waaaaay past her prime and it did pretty good. It wasn't a chart stopper, but her loyal fans saw to it that she would make a pretty good chunck of change from it.
She also had other musical and artistic skill sets that gave her an additional income. In other words, she was very savvy and smart with money and she had a back-up plan post music.
TB had a great musical career. She will do fine post music, too.
