Ciara Wades Into the N-Word War

In a recent interview Ciara shares her feelings on the N-word controversy caused by celebrity chef Paula Deen...

Ciara tells Access Hollywood,
"As an entertainer you have fun and it's all about the context it's used in. I am anAfrican-American woman, so I can identify with that word in different ways."
"I know where I'm coming from... If we have fun with it and you can understand where it's coming from, then you can probably receive it in that way."
"I have the power to speak in a light-hearted way about it... (but) I cannot hear another person of another race saying, 'You this and you that'. It's all about how you say it... You know when you're using it one way."

I want ciara to talk about her music, how she is swag jacking from janet jackson on her body party cover, and how she is in a 3 way love triangle with future and his baby-mamma

okay then

Well said Ciara...

Very well said Ciara. As far as "talking about her music". She was doing a interview dumb ass. THEY ASKED HER A QUESTION. I'm pretty sure they asked many questions!

Anonymous said...

Watch all the Ciara haters rush to this post to bash her. Calling her C-Error, like shes personally done something to you. Lol. I dont love her, but i dont hate her either. She's a young black woman trying to make it in a white OWNED music industry. Young girl FROM the South. Besides "Sorry" & "Body Party" both bang!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

@ Dirty Diana you clearly prove your moron status in every post. I thought the purpose of interviews are to ask questions and elicit perspectives from the interviewee?

If your dirty ass wants to hear her talk about her music then go on YouTube and there are dozens of Ciara interviews. Okay Hun??!! Obviously this clip is not about that!

Sooooo when was your last album again? Yeah, go work on your own career maybe. We barely remember who you are and you criticizing somebody? Hahaha have a seat.

Bee Gee said...

Agreed..

Empowering people to use the word? Bitch people have been calling blacks "niggers" and will continue to whether blacks use it or not.

Anonymous said...

The word is simply not a term of endearment no matter what context it is used in.

Anonymous said...

why is that racist white bitch getting so much publicity? if people stop talking about her recipe-stealing ass, all this fervor would die down and most of the population would forget about her! all this asking about use of the "n" word only keeps her name in the spotlight!

Anonymous said...

Damn, can we throw the dirt over this dead ass topic? Anyway...Well said Cici.

ANOTHER BRAINWASHED COON.

When will Black people learn that Black celebrities do not and will not EVER identify with us. Most of the are brainwashed puppets.

Anonymous said...

Ok so I was scared before I read her comment but to my surprise her reply was actually decent...

Anonymous said...

That made me really dislike her even more ms i wanna be white herself giving dumb justification of the word, these species of blacks need to stop calling themselves the n word. Its disgusting!

Anonymous said...

@2:59 straight up truth

Anonymous said...

Oh and she looks really retarded with that thing trying to be hair on her head

Bee Gee said...

@3:07 - "these species of blacks"

What in the hell are you talkin' about?

Anonymous said...

Just retire the word, i can totally live w/o it. In other countries the slang equivalent is "star" and "king." You don't know how uplifting and empowering it feels to have somebody address you as "what's up star" or what's up my Queen" Nigga needs to be gone and buried. And so does the word "dog"

Anonymous said...

not interested in having "fun" with that racial slur, or hearing it spoken/seeing it written in casual speech.

Dirtydianna said...

@2:28 I see I have a fan...You still reading every single word I write. Lmao @2:17 another fan I see... I DIDNT WASTE MY TIME TO LISTEN TO CIARA SPEAK. CIARA NEEDS TO STAY IN HER LANE, WHICH IS MUSIC, NOT PHILOSOPHY. NOW DUMB ASS THAT BOTH OF YOU TROLLS.

Anonymous said...

Ciara is very mature and that was well said.

Ms. Lee said...

I think that it's incredibly dysfunctional of many of us to continue using a word that has such a derogatory under tone. Regardless if you end it with "er" or "a", in my opinion, it is still the same word. So basically, it's okay for us to say "nigga" to each other, in our movies, in our stand up comedy acts, in our rap music, and in every day life, but if a non-Black person says it, it's a problem and we want to protest? This selective-outrage shit (excuse my language) really needs to stop.

Anonymous said...

I have always hated the N word! I find it insulting if said by any race! Alot of times when blacks get mad at each other they call one another that word as an insult! It annoys me to see especially a white person riding in their car listening to rap and saying the N word right along with the CD!

Dirtydianna said...

Ciara was stumbling, trying to make sure she was politically correct, when she just should have said nigger( what white people say)and nigga( used by black people) are different. And it is not ok for people who are NOT black to use either one including EMINEM Period...I see they asked about future...and like I said talk about that 3 way love triangle you in...she is a coon in the making.

ThatBKChick said...

And Ci-Errors comment on this is important because?

a. She's irrelevant and needs to be seen?
b. Failed Music Debut album DOA
c. Both A and B

As far as I’m concerned, this will probably always be a ‘to each his own’ issue. Not everyone sees the word the same anymore or gives it the same regard, so it’s impossible to expect everyone to take the same stance on the use of it. To some, it’s a double-edged sword. To others, it has a duality. The real is that the word is a general term of reference that can be weaponized as the first blow in an argument, fight, or worse…Or vice-versa, depending on what your opinion of its primary use is.

I wish brothas and sistas would reserve the use of ‘nigga’ for certain forums/arenas because there’s still so much drama associated directly with the dichotomy of the word, the potency of the word, and the irresponsible use of it. But at the same time I’m not gonna condemn any of my people using it in a context in which they mean no harm or disrespect to someone else. Personally, I use it in two environments: amongst my closest adult friends & family, and on this website. But that’s my prerogative and I can only apologize to those offended by my frequent use of it in here and tell you that unless I’m talkin’ about house niggas or something relative, I mean no disrespect at all.

I love discussing contrasting viewpoints on the topic, but I hate how those discussions often turn into heated personal arguments. So to each his own – I respect you, black man/woman. One..

I use nigga around close friends and family but when I'm referring to a white person I used the word white and not cracka - so what does this make me???? I don't use the word cracka because I feel like I'm trying to get back at the dumb white folks who love calling black niggers.... but my male friends close family we use nigga at times but that's us!

Anonymous said...

Gotta roll w/ Prof. Lee & the person who posed at 4:00 on this one. Yo Bee Gee, so basically you are making a bad word good? That word is not a term of endearment, my nigga. You see that? Why are we embracin' and celebratin' a word that was used [PURPOSELY] to fuck up our mental and spiritual? Those slavemasters knew that calling our people a NIGGER was nothin' more than a verbal slashing. But here our dumb asses are, makin' excuses for this shit because it's so intertwined in our culture. I disagree with you on man.

Tippie Toes said...

@5:20p
I get where you are coming from but most folks who use nigga and while it may not be a term of endearment it is a part of black slang...Nigger was used to berate our black community - and I've been using the word so long that I don't find it repulsive unless used to intentionally be malicious ...But get this - my son won't use the word nigga and he is a black man!

Bee Gee said...

@Tippie, that makes you not racist, queen.

@5:20 - Exactly. I'm making a bad word good. What's so wrong with that concept though? I've yet to meet someone even willing to delve into that enough to explain that one to me.

What's wrong with taking something bad and making it into something good? Isn't that what our people have been doing with the shitty hand we get dealt for more than a century? I think so.

As far as embracing and celebrating a word that was used to fuck up our mental and spiritual, we're not talking about the same word anymore, fam. Remember? I flipped that. That's what my whole point is/has been. I'm no longer defined by any variation of the word. However, if that word is directed at me as a term of endearment (which it often is) or a general non-harmful term of reference (which it often is), I'm cool with it and I accept it because my understanding and my truth about what I feel is the evolution of the word, exists in my heart.

I understand what the word was and I understand that it can still be that. But context can weaponize MANY words that are otherwise seen as harmless general terms of reference.

It's too personal of a thing to really try and impose on someone, in my opinion. Especially someone that feels as strongly and convicted as I do about the whole issue. So I say 'to each his own' and keep it movin..

Anonymous said...

Ciara explained it quit well I think, But UM, whose still booking Ciara for shows/events?

How does this celebrity thing work. Is it once you're in good then YOU'RE, IN for life?
or is Ciara still on the call list because the list of black crossover female stars is empty. They know they can't call Rhianna because she's out of control, Nicki is disgusting, Fantasia is... and Beyonce tired of picking up the phone to do every damn black female thing in crossover land.
The pickings are really slim, I get frustrated at the overexposure of beyonce, but when you look at it, ain't no damn body else available as far as civilized goes for POPULAR black female artist and they can't just book white popstars because that will be a problem. Ciara is civilized, beyonce and... O_o.......kelly Rowland/janelle monae, but they're not that popular.

I think Ciara is still on the list because the list is empty, lucky break for her career.

Tippie, ma you make no sense and that's okay because we all have out "I-said-some-dumb-shit" days, right? If you understood where I was coming from, your response would be totally different. The word [NIGGA] is NOT a term of endearment, but ignorant Black people tell themselves that in order to justify uttering that word every second of their lives. The only differenc in [NIGGA] and [NIGGER] are the endings. Like I said, nigger was used to demean the fuck out of us and like the dummies most of us are, we allegedly "took the word back" [LOL, what?] and made it mean something different. Nah playa, that shit is not different, it means the same as it meant 400 years ago. Can you explain why we never hear of Asians calling themselves "chinks" in public? Why don't we hear Jews slandering themselves by publicly calling each other "kikes"? What about out Latinos? Do they publicly call each other "wet backs" and "spics"? Y'all gotta do better. I'm not trying to be offensive, but any Black person comfortable with the word "nigga" is just another brainwashed, post-traumatic-slave-syndrome-having lost individual.

Nigger = used to demean those Black American slaves of African descent.

Nigga = used by the descendants of Black American slaves who are no longer physically enslaved, but are mentally and spiritually enslaved, hence the delusion of trying to sugar coat a word that once humiliated the fuck out of their ancestors.

Since we're making bad words out to be good (I'm looking at you Bee Gee), how can we make the word "devil" good? I mean shit, it's the same context as the nigger/nigga argument, right?

*Waits for the misinformed, irrational "niggas" to come spew their retarded logics*

My son doesn't like the world and as a Black MAN that is his perogative...

@5:34 - So no matter how much people "casualize" the word, you insist that it only has one meaning?

No diss at all fam, but you sound like the brainwashed one. Think about it. You're literally defending the very ignorance and evil that the word was intended for despite the FACT that its use has been modified by blacks over time.

This is where some of my people lose me. I swear it's like some of us crave to be defined by the word in only it's original meaning, and will accept nothing less. That's brainwashed and shackled if you ask me..

And as far as other races. Asian peoples are among the most racist on the planet. Ever studied the racism between Japanese and Chinese? Ever studied how Japanese, Chinese, and Korean barely disregard other "lower-on-the-totem-pole" Asians like Cambodians, Vietnamese, Laotian, Thai, Filipino, etc.. as sub-human? Ever read about Pol Pot and the killing fields? The muthafucka was basically Hitler the Asian version. Ever called a Mexican a Puerto Rican or vice-versa? See how they respond. You think other Hispanics don't refer to Mexicans as wetbacks? You think Mexicans that regard themselves as higher don't refer to the less fortunate of their people as wetbacks?

C'mon man..

We love each other from a conscious e-sister to a conscious e-brother, right? One of the classes that I teach is on Black Linguistics. In fact, half of my PhD research was dedicated to Ebonics and our entire Black vernacular system of communicative expression. Anyway, there are countless studies showing how the word "nigga" has driven many of us into a voluntary mindset of self-oppression by trying to vehemently mask, justify, alter, and modify a word that was so incredibly cruel to us historically, culturally, and socially. I respect your opinion, but I just wanted you to know this information. I don't love you any less for using the word, but please stay open minded.

I disagree with her comment. The word nigger and humor are not symbolic. The sole purpose of this word is to degrade and belittle black people. I'm sure our ancestors didn't find humor in this word while the slave master worked them like a mule calling them a nigger. I used to cringe with anger and embarrassment when I rode public transportation. Every morning (and evening) The Black teenagers on the bus cursed and called each other nigger. They had no shame and didn't care who heard them. Ciarra needs to ask her senior relatives from the south (if she has any in the south) or any senior black person if they find humor in this word. I'm sure their answer will be no.

The KKK was having fun when they were lynching you from the tree as they shut out die nigger die. What an endearing word! I straight up tell people do not call me a nigger. I know who I am and what I am and it's not a nigger. 9:42 PM
___

yes, quite endearing. perhaps if the kkk had uttered, "die, my nigga, die," the lynchings would have been more tolerable, more endearing, to those whose necks were in the nooses...

You hit the nail right on the head. People take what someone says on the internet so serious. BeeGee could be logging in from a mental hospital. For all we know.

@7:54pm and 10:17pm (probably the same person) - Is that refried troll shit all you have to lend to the topic? You don't care what I have to say butcha ass do nothing but comment at me as soon as you notice anybody dialoging with a nigga. Fuck yo couch..

For anyone that fathom how a word like nigger can be modified over time and given a dual meaning/use, I can't really help you. But the FACT is that people now use the word as a term of endearment and as a general term of referencing an individual or a group of individuals. I and others do it on here all the time, and some of you niggas in here frontin' like you're disgusted at the concept probably use the word more than you'd ever admit.

But regardless of how preposterous you think it may be that NIGGER could evolve into something less than the single-purposed word of degradation that it was, time to wake the fuck up because it has. If you don't agree with that, cool, but it doesn't change the fact that the meaning of the word has been given a duality - this is not speculation, this is what has actually happened.

Some of you females in here that spit flame at the concept probably use the word "bitch" or "hoe" to address your girlfriends in a playful way that's understood between the two or the lot of you.

Somebody asked me earlier to take the term "axe murderer" and make it good. It's not much of an argument, but I'll fuck witchu anyways. People use the words "murder" and "kill" in ways that are harmless like "he murdered that track" or "she killed it at the awards tonight".

So just like some of you think it's stupid as fuck to think that "nigger" could be modified to mean something good or general, I think it's stupid as fuck that some of you seem to want to protect the word nigger like it's our special word and should never mean anything but what it was originally intended to mean.

Fuck that mindset. If you feel defined by the word to the point where you think that no matter what context it's used in it's the same demeaning and hateful dart it was intended to be...that's your prerogative, but you sound way funny calling somebody that considers context "closed-minded". Stay hung up on that shit and it'll be a card that muthafuckin racists can play on you til the day you die. Not me.

The word is no longer simply a racial slur intended to demean black people, no matter how much you insist it is.

Do you..

Bee Gee said...

@11:05pm you're absolutely right. The point is that it shouldn't matter who I am or where I'm posting from.

But it matters to the trolls and stalkers, doesn't it? Matters like a muthafucka? Matters so much that they consume themselves with it. It always matters to the sociopaths and probably always will. Oh well..

So when a mother yells at her son, " nigga git yo ass ova here", thats meant in a warm and loving context? So when someone says they wanna buss a cap in a nigga, that's just a lighthearted threat? So when Snoop raps, "brace yoself nigga for u make me take this to another level", he's just expressing brotherly love?
Lol. There should be a psychological research study on Blacks and our Incredibly persistent defense of usage of N I G G A (and other issues that do not elevate us in any way.)
I would PAY to read that shit!

The biggest turnoff, ever... Is hearing a grown ass man, especially one that outwardly appears like he has some semblance of intelligence and poise, blurt out nigga in mid-conversation.
The biggest disappointment is seeing an old man, in his 60's using the word nigga as if that will amke him seem more youthful.
The biggest embarassment is hearing a group of teens compulsively say the word nigga while in public, for all to endure.

So when a mother yells at her son, " nigga git yo ass ova here", thats meant in a warm and loving context? PROBABLY NOT, IF SHE'S YELLING AT HIM. I DOUBT IT MATTERS WHAT TERM SHE USES. IN THIS CONTEXT, NOTHING IS ENDEARING.

So when someone says they wanna buss a cap in a nigga, that's just a lighthearted threat? IN THIS CONTEXT, "NIGGA" COULD EASILY BE REPLACED WITH "DUDE". IT SEEMS TO BE A GENERAL REFERENCE IN THIS CONTEXT, NOT REALLY IMPORTANT TO THE STATEMENT.

So when Snoop raps, "brace yoself nigga for u make me take this to another level" SAME AS ABOVE. IT'S GENERAL.
----------------------------

I got a text from my older brother last week. He, as he often does, signs off with "Love you ma nigga or Love you little bruh" In that context, it's nothing more than a term of endearment. When me and my best friend part ways at work each Friday, he typically says something like a hug and "You ma nigga, B, thanks for everything this week, black man." Again, in that context, it's used as a term of endearment.

Context allows one to use variations of a word or words, and mean the same thing. It's context.. I don't see how this is so hard to fathom as something achievable. Plenty of brothas and sistas speak in the context i just gave as an example.

I see it in here (for example on a Naomi Campbell thread):

"That's a bad bitch" - In this context, "bitch" is not demeaning in the least. It's used as a compliment, it's endearing.

now (usually found somewhere in the same Naomi thread - probably even by me lol)

"Man fuck that bitch with her crusty toes" - In this context, bitch is absolutely not meant as a compliment and the poster is not endearing his/herself to Naomi.

In many cases, context allows one with an understanding of it the ability to weaponize and disarm the same words or terms. The famous saying "It's not what you said, it's how you said it" refers to context. How you say something can be the difference between getting dap'd up or catchin' an ass-whoopin.. Context, fam..

Anonymous said...

Oh shit, thats right-context.
So that means the word CAN be used interchangably as a term of endearment OR in a Contempuous manner.
Right.

Bee Gee said...

^Absolutely.

The thing that gets me is that white people say it, regardless of how black people use the word. They created the word. They created racism and racial superiority, they live and breathe by it. Why the hell is this even a discussion.

Yo, BeeGee! What's up, Nigga? Just wanted to say that I've been reading your posts for a year and you seem to be a very intelligent person; However, I really think you blew it with this thread, brotha. Black folks have been through too much (slavery, civil rights, et. al.)to 'accept' the word nigger coming from anyone's mouth, let alone, treat it as a term of endearment when greeting anybody. I purposely started my post greeting you with the word nigga. Believe it or not, this is the first time I've addressed someone on RWS with this word and I must say I don't see the humor or understand how a person feels endeared with this type of greeting, whether you're a peer, family member, or a cyberspace blogger. I will always see this word as degrading and will always view it as a racial slur.

@12:15 am Exactly, but you wasting your time trying to explain it to the basic muthyfuckas in here.

i have never had a black or white boss call me nigga. stop comparing this bitch to the streets.

@6:40 i get the feeling there are a lot of people, employers, just like her: racist and clueless or pretending to be clueless. so sad in 2013.

not a fan of "bitch" either. i don't care what the "context" is.

Bee Gee said...

@1:24am - I don't see how I blew anything. You stated your personal feeling about the issue and I respect that. Blacks have used 'nigga' casually amongst one another for more than 40 years, if not longer. A lot of us grew up hearing it used casually, but not everyone's story is the same. That's life..

Anonymous said...

@BeeGee, Ima have to disagree with you on this one. I have never used nigger/ga/gah as a term of endearment, nor have I ever used bitch/biach, hoe, etc. on any of my female. My friends, family, etc., never used it towards me.

I don't care how anyone spins it, how much respect do you have for your own people/women in using these words on your loved ones.

From Day 1, I thought that "take back" the word movement was bullshit.

Bee Gee said...

@8:14 - Peace. That's thing. It's not spin to everyone. Not everyone sees it the same way. I don't know about any movement to take back the word, but I do know that we're all individuals who experienced our own separate upbringings. Because of that, people are gonna feel differently on this. Hopefully we can agree to disagree and maintain respect for each other. But I understand it's an emotionally charged issue. So be it..
