12 Years A Slave Wins Top Prize at Toronto Film Fest

The film 12 Years a Slave wins The People's Choice Awards at this year's Toronto Film Festival...

12 Years a Slave starring Chiwetel Ejiofor is a true story based on the autobiography of the same name written by Solomon Northop, a free man of color who was kidnapped in 1841 and sold into slavery where he remained for 12 years before his escape.

Solomon's brutally honest book shed light on the horrors of slavery and shocked viewers at this year's Toronto Film Festival.

According to reports many movie goers walked out unable to deal with the brutality.

The People's Choice Award winner is often a precursor to an Academy Award, but some fear the Academy may be turned off by the film's violence.

12 Years a Slave is set to debut in theaters in October.
