Kanye West Re-Claims Confederate Flag

Kanye West has been catching heat for using the Confederate Flag on his Yeezus tour merchandise [click here if you missed that].

Get used to it cause  Yeezy says the Confederate flag is his now...

Kanye tells 97.1 in LA
'React how you want. Any energy you got is good energy. You know the confederate flag represented slavery in a way -- that's my abstract take on what I know about it.'
'So I made the song New Slaves. So I took the Confederate flag and made it my flag. It's my flag now. Now what are you going to do?'

Why is he always so damn defensive? WTF is he doing in society to make a positive impact, besides seeming taking a ho off the streets?

The workds keeps turning, Kanye - with or without your monkey ass...

hmmm, interesting possibilities, but still just a show and not nearly as interesting as if he had some detailed knowledge of history and could speak on it intelligently...

you can only take from this world what is yours,

EARTH TO KANYE:

that was never your flag! you must be so small in other areas that you need to drum up negative publicity for something so foolish . . .

get out of here with that mess and while others think this is "brilliant", I bring your attention to the "n" word and ask how do you think this will work out. many people try to fiftytwo fake out that word, and look . .

you are just too stupid, too thirsty for words . . . any one buying into this is just as delusional as he is . . .

people will do ANY AND EVERYTHING FOR MONEY OR FAME.

No one is a slave but you Kanye, you got to put out something that will enable you to pay back all those advances that corporate America extended to you . . .

how sad, how pathetic . . .

This is actually one of the few times I get Kanye. "Its my flag now what are you going to do about it?" said Kanye. I from the South too. Take power & vitriol from the racist. The rebel flag is not actually the flag of the Confederacy

I think he is looking to be lynched by these racist whites.

Your relatives and your father need to sit you down and explain to you what that flag stands for. No amount of you claiming it is going to change the fact that the flag represents the south's defiance to the north and the affirmation of slavery and the right of the south to continue the practice. The flag existed for the expressed purpose of affirming the south's destiny to continue slavery!

if it wasn't kanye i would try to make sense out of it.
that flag need to be a joke of.

The statement I have to make isn't about Kanye its about the Confederate flag & racism. The worse thing as a people that we do is that we give them the satisfaction. Everytime we give we get angry or mad we fall right in their hands. That is what they want. When they call us N that is to hurt us and make us angry. I'm not going ti give them what they want and play their games. I do the opposite of what they expect. I take it back. I've done it on my job years ago. Didn't do the stereotypical black girl thing. Iwasn't called names. My work was excellent & they ended up looking stupid. Don't always fall foe the obvious. If Whites love that flag & it represents them who cares

The Confederate States of America was created by secessionists in Southern slave states who refused to remain in a nation that they believed was turning them into second–class citizens.[12] They judged the agent of change to be abolitionists and anti-slavery elements in the Republican Party, whom they believed used repeated insult and injury to subject them to intolerable "humiliation and degradation".[13] The "Black Republicans" (as the Southerners called them) and their allies would soon become a majority in the United States House, Senate, and Presidency. On the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Roger B. Taney (a presumed supporter of slavery) was 83 and ailing.

During the campaign for president in 1860, some secessionists threatened disunion should Lincoln be elected, most notably William L. Yancey. Yancey toured the North calling for secession as Stephen A. Douglas toured the South calling for union in the event of Lincoln's election.[14] To Secessionists the Republican intent was clear: the elimination or restriction of slavery. A Lincoln victory presented them with a momentous choice, even before his inauguration, "The Union without slavery, or slavery without the Union."[15]

The display of the Confederate flag is a highly controversial topic. It was largely absent during the Civil War, Rather, the Confederate flag was reintroduced in 1956, just two years after the Supreme Court decision Brown v Board of Education. It was considered by many to be a protest against school desegregation.[27] It was raised at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) during protests against integration of schools.[28]

Supporters of the flag view it as a symbol of southern heritage and the independence of the distinct cultural tradition of the South from the North. Some groups use the Southern Cross as one of the symbols associated with their organizations, including groups such as the Ku Klux Klan.[29]

For some, the flag represents only a past era of southern sovereignty.[30] Some historical societies such as the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the United Daughters of the Confederacy also use the flag as part of their symbols. Some rockabilly fans hold the Confederate flag as their emblem as well.[31]

As a result of these varying perceptions, there have been a number of political controversies surrounding the use of the Confederate flag in Southern state flags, at sporting events, at Southern universities, and on public buildings. According to Civil War historian and native Southerner Shelby Foote, the flag traditionally represented the South's resistance to Northern political dominance; it became racially charged during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, when fighting against desegregation suddenly became the focal point of that resistance.[citation needed]

Symbols of the Confederacy remain a contentious issue across the United States and their civic placement has been debated vigorously in many Southern state legislatures since the 1990s.[citation needed] Supporters have labeled attempts to display the flag as an exercise of free speech in response to bans in some schools and universities, but have not always been successful in court [32] when attempting to use this justification.

Please read ^^^^ and understand the issues behind the adopted symbol of Kanye West and why many find it un-appealing and un-dignified.

I agree. Kanye doesn't even look like he used to. That vacant look in his eyes is scary. Where is his family? All them aunts he talked about in his song...where are they? This idiot needs his village. Somebody please help him or wire his jaw shut again at minimum.

YES!

HOPEFULLY HE TAKES THE SWASTIKA NEXT!!

Maybe now the Kanyettes will stop coming to his defense every time someone calls him on his bullshit.

@1:46 excellent point. There shouldn't be any single word or symbol that has the power to diminish to affect you a person and get you angry or make you feel ashamed. Allowing it to get to you takes away your power. That's why words like 'cracker' doesn't even affect white ppl - it rolls off them like water off a duck's back and they don't allow it to hold any power over them whatsoever. Kanye is a truly free man. The bondages that bind folk down and 'cause them to walk with shame or self doubt or labels no longer bind him. He should feel secure in the knowledge that there are those (very few) who get it.

And then, if he is at all interested in saving his career, try to tone it down because most people just don't understand and he can't force it.

I get it....he's trying to rid the meaning of what the flag represents to us blacks and whites...attempting to dilute the hatred it reaps, thus making it powerless, while (in some sick way) take ownership of this dumb as X, but it's not working. He looks like a fool. I seriously think he's going crazier, right before our very eyes. The mofo was born crazy; it's just getting worse.

KANYE NEEDS MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES, REAL TALK. TO ALL OF YOU WHO THINK THAT HES A GENIUS CONTINUE UNDER YOUR DELUSIONS BUT TO THE TRAINED EYE, WE CAN PLAINLY SEE THAT THIS MAN NEEDS A 72 HOUR HOLD TO ASSESS WHATS GOING ON AND TRY TO GET HIM MENTALLY STABILIZED. REAL TALK.

The man is crazy, but I see what he's trying to do here. I think I like him pissing off certain people.

@1st 12:28 You summed it up perfectly. Coonye doesn't have the intelligence or historical reference to even talk about the impact or significance of the confederate flag in reference to his "art."

He's just doing anything he can to shock and stay relevant.
But anyway, black folks supposedly reclaimed(in your own mind) the word "nigger," so you might as well reclaim the confederate flag too.

Kanye is doing nothing but repeating what has been done before.

White hipsters in the 1950s called themselves challenging racial rules and stereotypes, and pretended to befriend blacks and "take back" the hurtful expressions and images that were used against us for centuries.

Some unfortunate blacks who were desperately seeking validation from these "edgy" white people played the game and were more than happy to coon for the whites, with the black people thinking they were being clever and cerebral, and the white people pretending to be.

Kanye is just a new millennium Bojangles tap dancing for his corporate masters.

Kanye West is a militant black man with a white woman trying (what appears to be trying) to take the sting out of racism for his people...WHEN IN REALITY, Kanye is with white trash and now that everyone is turning on him (since he started on the pro-black platform) is trying to get whatever fans he has left to support his new "pro-black", by accepting his girlfriend. This is all a ruse to get us to acknowledge KK as someone of substance and importance.

"Enter the kingdom but watch who you bring home
They see a black man with a white woman at the top floor they gone come to kill King Kong"

I used to love Kanye...he turned out to be the biggest joke in Hip Hop, but I shoulda KNOWNT (yes knownt) it; look at his best friend Consequence the color struck Muslim :-/

Imagine all we could accomplish if we weren't bogged down by the notion of being Black. Truth is, most people love & welcome the inferiority complex because it gives them an excuse to be mediocre. If it didn't matter anymore, people would actually be forced to take control, truly live and excel to levels of creativity & ownership but that sounds too much like hard work for most. As a person, there should be nothing that you allow to make you feel less than - that is giving away your power. A good message is still a good message even if it's coming from the hated sell-out 'yeezus'. Look at the message, not the person

What's the big deal about inter-racial dating though? Why would you hate someone just for dating outside their race? I'm sure kim's ass size and independence is all that mattered to kanye, not her race. I believe he was also turned on and intrigued by her being such a hoe. Some men like that. I just don't understand why ya'll so pressed about him being with Kim just 'cause she's white. That's racist. Timberland's ex-wife had two kids by other men before marrying him yet no one was up in arms about that! Atleast Kim has one babydaddy. What's with the double standard??

The "democrats" and "republicans" of today are support different political policies than they did at that time. During the early 20th century there was a "role reversal" so to speak. This lead to the parties as they are today.
