Aaron McGruger Addresses Boondocks Season 4

Last week The Boondocks fans were stunned to find out creator Aaron McGruder would not be involved in the fourth, and likely last, season of The Boondocks on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim [click here if you missed that].

Aaron McGruder opens up about his departure...

Aaron writes on Facebook,
"As the world now knows, The Boondocks will be returning for a fourth season, but I will not be returning with it. I’d like to extend my gratitude to Sony and Adult Swim for three great seasons.
I created The Boondocks two decades ago in college, did the daily comic for six years, and was showrunner on the animated series for the first three seasons. The Boondocks pretty much represents my life’s work to this point. Huey, Riley, and Granddad are not just property to me. They are my fictional blood relatives. Nothing is more painful than to leave them behind.
To quote a great white man, “Hollywood is a business”. And to quote another great white man, “Don’t hold grudges”.
What has never been lost on me is the enormous responsibility that came with The Boondocks - particularly the television show and it’s relatively young audience. It was important to offend, but equally important to offend for the right reasons. For three seasons I personally navigated this show through the minefields of controversy. It was not perfect. And it definitely was not quick. But it was always done with a keen sense of duty, history, culture, and love. Anything less would have been simply unacceptable.
As for me, I’m finally putting a life of controversy and troublemaking behind me with my upcoming Adult Swim show, BLACK JESUS."

This is going to be interesting to see how this plays out without its creator. Of course, they are wanting to capitalize off his success but I put money on it that they totally fuck it up

Thanks for the memories AM. Hope he was being facetious with the "great white man" comment.

My husband loves 'The Boondocks,' but once he found out that Aaron would not be apart of this new season, he declined to watch it. I told him to give it a try and he agreed, but I personally think that Aaron and his creative rights were 'bought' literally and figuratively.

so he sold his show? but why? it will not be the same without him.

Unfortunately that's Hollywood. In order to succeed he had to sell rights for one show so that they can support another one. If this is his passion he didn't want to burn any bridges. It is what is is.

@952 he always is lol!

I'm going watch the first few and see where they take this without AM. I got a feeling it wont be as hard hitting as before and they probably screw the whole message of the show up. Remember alot of young kids enjoyed this show! With it also having a positive message you can gurantee the powers that be wanted to get there hands on it

This shit is gonna FUCKIN SUCK without its creator. I remember when Dragon ball z got picked up by different creators & it was A SHITY MESS! family guy also sucks ass now

Magick said...

@10:33, wait, what?? I haven't seen the new episodes of Family Guy but Seth McFarlane no longer does the writing??

Wash and repeat....same thing happened with The Game and every other successful show that original writers leave and let the PTB get their hands on.

^^^^Im not sure But I sense he doesnt because the last few seasons aint been funny worth shit. Maybe Seth McFarlane ran out of Ideas. Happens to the best of them. Same happened with The SAW franchise, First 3 movies were great then Began to fall off imo

@10:44, I have been watching the old ones that they show on TNT nightly so I am not up to speed on the new ones. I do remember the killing off of Brian was a really stupid idea but other than that, I have not seen any of the newer ones. I will check into that...Family Guy is one of my favorites when I just want to crack up laughing.

I have only seen maybe the first two or three of the Saw franchise (was a few years late even catching the first one) so I will go ahead and take your word on that one. You are right, it happens to the best of them...

Lol @ the great white man comment..we know damm well what he meant and it was funny!!...imma let somebody else review this new boondocks..i ain't got time to be sifting thru their version of what was once great..seen enough of that already..as for Black Jesus I read that he's supposed to be livin in Compton with a few homeboys as disciples navigating thru the madness

I cannot see how this show is going to be the same without AM.

That's like Family Guy without Seth McFarlane
That's like The Simpsons without Matt Goering
That's JUST LIKE In Living Color without Kenan and Michael Wayans.

Just ...won't be the same.

....it be like Corn flakes without the milk...

....Peanut butta and no Jelly.

I mean come on! Some things just go together!

Whenever you take the originator..the creator out of the equation...it's never the same.

On another note...He must be talking about that same "great white man" that steals, kills and destroys everything he can. Sounds like him...

Hey Aaron,
The period goes inside the quotation mark, your ass is not British.
#Punctuation101

That is all.

No doubt The Boondocks is going to suck worse than The Cleveland Show!

There are rumors that he did take part in this season. He took part in writing at least half. What's in dispute is whether Aaron or the network exercised their option to cut ties. This season was supposed to air in Jan. He was on board and the person several cast members mentioned as who told them about season 4. Also Aaron bumps heads with a lot of people and he's hard to read. He can come across as lazy, afraid of success, or a perfectionist. He's been working on Black Jesus for 4 years. It doesn't take 4 years to cultivate a show. Whatever his issue he's not Stanley Kubrick so nobody has sympathy over his eating of time.

Anonymous said...

He's left Boondocks in the hands of some white men and he's walking away with his pockets full of money. He can focus on Black Jesus as much as he wants, but he'll still have a hard time looking in the mirror when he thinks about what he's left behind. Pity.

How does a comment get stupider after each punctuation mark?

His leaving doesnt sound contentious. Creative types like him usually like to put their all into one project at a time. The boondocks has enough material for the fourth season to draw from. By now all the writers and directors should know how to let the fourth season play out.

Anonymous said...

people are still under the guise that he left because "the boondocks is going to be the same" in season 4, because the new direction will be in line with the last 3 seasons? even after reading aarons exact words?? silly wabbits. boondocks season 4 should be boycotted...if its CREATOR left, its obviously because of CREATIVE differences lol smh....
