Zendaya Cast as Aaliyah

Back in April we broke the news that casting was underway for an Aaliyah biopic [click here if you missed that].

Disney's Shake It Up star Zendaya Coleman has been cast in the role…

Zendaya will play Aaliayah in the new biopic produced by Lifetime based on Christopher Farley’s best-selling biography Aaliyah: More Than a Woman.

Zendaya will record four Aaliayah songs for made for TV movie.

Wasn't Missy " Beaver Hunter" Elliott and Timbaland on the radio saying no one talked to them or the family about a script for a movie?! I would think those are the people that knew her best, unless R-Kelly was a consultant (extreme sarcasm)

Anonymous said...

It could work if they are mainly focusing on her early years, but this is rather suspicious timing considering that only her brother is left alive ( her father and mother passed back to back a few years ago); however, I think they should make Zendaya lip-sync her songs like how Angela Bassett did in the Tina Turner movie and J-Lo in Selena. Having Zendaya re-record her music is not right and I just dont see Zendaya being able to match her tone.

Anonymous said...

the continued erasure of black women..the best way to say F you, is to not watch at all.

Aaliyah mom is still alive. Zendaya is a bad choice. They basically just picked selena gomez.

Thanks didn't know her parents had passed. She is a cute girl and with the right attitude and coaching she can pull it off.

Anonymous said...

From time to time I wonder what her career would have been by now, had she lived.

Anonymous said...

No!

Anonymous said...

And I am still asking "why is anybody doing a biopic"? She was cute girl who made a few decent songs but she was no great talent. Awful acting and what seems to be little to no personality. The most interesting part of the movie will be the plane crash and her stint as Mrs. R. Kelly. Snoozer!!!

Anonymous said...

@8:18 &8:19, this is 8:12, my apologies her mother is gravely ill. She has not passed yet, her father died in 2012.

ENOUGH ALREADY WITH THIS SHIT!

Who keeps leaking these damn stories about "Who Will Play Aaliyah". How about not making a biopic at all. I swear, it's like Hollywood waits for pop stars to die because they know they are worth more dead!

Anonymous said...

Why? She's not even black.

Anonymous said...

Hollyweird casting couch and mansion parties canidate wins again smh. They always get the "Disney" ones

Anonymous said...

They couldn't find a black girl to play the part. I will not be watching. smdh.

Ms. Lee said...

Ms. Coleman is the product of an African father and a European mother.

Anyway, Aaliyah was a beautiful woman with several nice albums. Peace to the Haughton and Hankerson families.

Anonymous said...

I agree...pretty young lady but she seemed to lack personality. Totally boring. Where was her spunk? She never really connected with the fans or the public. ,

Anonymous said...

Even the deceased are disrespected. If YOU thought Aaliyah was boring, untalented, etc., fine, but not everyone feels that way. Honestly, if that's how you feel about her, why are you even on this post with your negativity? Niggas are the originators of hating, envy, jealousy, and malice.

Anonymous said...

@Ms Lee yep Zendaya is mixed but you know how some unmixed folks feel. She's Black but only when it's convenient according to the unmixed Black people. lol

Anonymous said...

I am scratching my head that Aaliyah….no disrespect…would even get a BIOPIC. Don't you need to live a little before you get that kind of treatment? Aaliyah tragically died at 22 but BIOPIC material is a considerably REACHING. But since the wheels are already spinning on this will they include how Aaliyah was fucking R. Kelly and gave it to him so good he married her at 15? Are they gonna include her love affair with Dame Dash and purportedly Jay-Z? This is about profit and nothing else. I'm not mad at Zendaya…I think she'll do great but folks need to stop acting like Aaliyah was the Chaka Khan of her generation...

Anonymous said...

No. What's next? Jennifer Lawrence as Esther Rolle? FOH

Anonymous said...

No thanks! I'll pass on this. Zendaya, is a Disney star, plus she was second on "Dancing with the Stars", so I guess they want to strike the iron while its hot by selecting her. To get her fans to watch this biopic. Keshia Chante must be weeping somewhere.

Anonymous said...

Aaliyah was EXTREMELY pretty and that's probably why you jealous hoes are still hating on her. AND her hair was REAL. Yeah, no wonder you hoes are talking about 'she wasn't worthy of a biopic.' Sit down.

Anonymous said...

@9:47, Keshia Chante is somewhere eating a lot of crow.

Anonymous said...

Aaliyah only rocked her real hair during her debut era. Every other era she had pieces or extensions.

Duh said...

All these people saying Zendaya isn't black ... Her dad is African. How much blacker can you get?

Anonymous said...

Aaliyah's hair was long when she was 3 years old. Enough with the hating. You bitches need to be dropped off on a remote island. Her hair was longer than yours regardless.

Nasir Saadiq said...

@8:29 at 15 she sold 3 millin copies and second album sold 8 millon, total she has sold 52 millon and billboard named her the 10th most successful female r&b artist of the past 25 years and she did most of this b4 22. Thats probaly why, but nice way to throw shade at the deceased!!

Anonymous said...

Yeah Zendaya is black but I think they should just let her lipsync to Aaliyah's music. Zendaya loves hip hip. I watched her on DWTS and they playe her song Replay in the opening on the view almost everyday.

@9:28am

What you call un-mixed black people is incorrect. Most blacks today are ''mixed" due to the raping of slave women generations back and mixing with native American tribes. Pure blood blacks in this country is a myth. What blacks you describe as unmixed black people are people who IDENTIFY as black and a lot of that was due to Black Pride which use to be strong and positive. Sadly a lot of today's young blacks are lost because of the chains on their minds. That INCLUDES a lot of your so-called "mixed" blacks.

10:39, Most Black people don't look mixed, nor are their hair textures evident of an obvious mixture. I'm talking about unmixed Black people with two Black (unmixed) parents. I don't care if your great, great, great grandparents were Native American or mixed with French or whatever else Black people claim. I'm talking about a Whoop Goldberg, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Tasha Smith unmixed person versus an Alicia Keys, Halle Berry, and Tracee Ellis Ross mixed person. There are very obvious differences among these 6 "Black" women.

Lol. White people made that rule up to keep the White race pure. The one drop rule is discriminatory and very ignorant, yet Black people still embrace it. I'm not surprised though. Black folks really embrace a lot of socially and culturally destructive things!

Black folks invented hate, envy and malice?

And I guess when white Europeans decided to colonize the Americas and Africa, they danced around the Maypoles with the Native Americans and Africans and brought gifts? I guess American slavery never existed and they brought millions of Africans overseas because they were giving then a luxury cruise to the Americas for a life of milk and honey...

Better yet, in the Bible, Judas never betrayed Jesus and Judas was the best man in Jesus's wedding? Satan was never kicked out of Heaven but was promoted to Earth because God thought he was so amazing?

Leave it to the ignorant people to turn this into a racial debate. The girl is black and white who cares. Anyways. I watched her in some interviews and dance videos and I think she could possibly do this role justice. She obviously has to lose the Disney flow and step her sexy, mellow vibe up a lot. But regardless of the casing I just hope they maintain the respect for baby girl. Seeing as her father is dead and her mom and brother have been shutting down projects with aaliyah's name on it for years, I'm sure they had nothing to do with it. If this is not done in a tasteful manner I smell law suits.

Anonymous said...

Y'all are way too caught up in this casing. Granted we want someone to resemble Aaliyah but we all know she was truly one in a million. It didn't matter who they picked they was going to be backlash. Aaliyah was more than a pretty face and for all of you asking why she's relevant enough to have a biopic, without her a lot of r&b artist wouldn't have the style they have today. Her sexiness was natural, she didn't try hard she just vibed and did her own thing.

Look at this ignorance right here. "Mixed" is just that, meaning two or more substances joined together. Alicia, Halle and Tracee are all BIRACIAL as well as being mixed. Biracial implies exactly two races coming together. That's why they all appear equally European and black. Whoopi, Sheryl and Tasha may or may not be mixed but none are biracial so they wont have a biracial appearance.

Just because aaliyah chose to put education first and before over-saturating the market doesn't mean that she didn't have a connection with her fans. With each album she dropped she would take a long break but in between those breaks she would drop a song or two for a sound-track. To add to that, there is simply no denying that aaliyah was well on her way to bigger stardom, she had A+ MOVIES lined up and was going to gain more endorsement deals but unfortunately her life was cut short in the midst of it all. Hollywood would not waste their time doing a biopic on aaliyah if they felt they couldn't tell a story regarding her life. END OF STORY!

Aaliyah is black and Indian :) and before you get so caught up in my proper use of their and they're (you understood what I was saying though right?) which was clearly a mistake, you should double check YOUR logic to make sure YOU’RE making sense. If you believe Aaliyah's grandmother was white, how the hell does that make both parents black? Are you using the 1 drop rule? If so, then Zendaya is black as well, according to you, seeing as though her father is black, further confirming my initial point that they are both the same (either black and black or mixed and mixed) and people should be more concerned whether or not she can pull off Aaliyah’s style and vibe. Thank you.
