Prince Pays Tribute to Vanity

Earlier this week Prince fans were shocked to learn his former protégée, Denise 'Vanity' Matthews, passed away from kidney failure [click here if you missed that].

At a show this week in Australia Prince paid tribute to her memory...

According to multiple reports Prince acknowledged Vanity's passing by sharing stories about their time together and changing song lyrics to include references to her.

At one point Prince told the audience,
"Can I tell you a story about Vanity? Or should I tell you a story about Denise? Her and I used to love each other deeply. She loved me for the artist I was, I loved her for the artist she was trying to be. She and I would fight. She was very headstrong 'cause she knew she was the finest woman in the world. She never missed an opportunity to tell you that."
Prince also revealed how he once threatened to throw Vanity into the pool during an argument but she told him, “You can’t throw me in the pool, you’re too little," adding, “I probably shouldn’t be telling this story but she’d want us to celebrate her life and not mourn her.”

Vanity will be missed.

Just goes to show you can live your life as a ho, get saved and die and very few people remember you.

Wonder how many guys that ran through her are going to be at her funeral?

Probably zero

Sweet...in addition to paying tribute, maybe he could've helped pay her medical bills? Sad she had a gofundme set up asking for 50k and only raised 6.6k. On top of that gofundme can be anonymous. Of course he's not obligated, but you're worth 250-300M. Matbe he didn't know, idk.

Not only that @ 10:56, this woman practically lived on TBN network preaching and giving her testimony often. You would think that prosperity pimpin station would easily pay her medical bill with. Gofundme? Really? They should be completely ashamed...

10:56, I agree he should have helped. They were lovers so he had to know her condition. He is religious as well or does jeovha witness dont help old friends?

Prior to Denice Matthews becoming a born again Christian, she hated the Vanity character she had become and she was very unhappy with that lifestyle. When she got saved, she removed everything physical (records, clothing, etc) that reminded her of Vanity away. Vanity's passing was a home going celebration, unlike what Prince is referring to, in the Christian world. I'm embarrassed to admit I was a die hard Prince fan (back in the day). He represents nothing of substance.

Why do people always expect cause somebody else has more money they should just automatically foot the bill - that's not his wife or relative so they phucked once upon a time so what - he isn't obligated morally or otherwise... I swear to god I hate this kind of i'm down you doing good so help me out mentality - do yourself a favor and help your damn self stop looking for handouts... uugghhh

I dont get you MFers.....so if all the members of Prince's old band 'The Revolution' or Morris Day, or Sheena Easton, or Carmen Electra or whoever Prince made famous or ran thru....if they get sick he's supposed to foot the bill. I like how everyone has their hands in Prince purse. I suppose if your Ex gets sick you'll be rushing over to their bedside with your checkbook ready to pay for their medical expenses. Maybe Prince didnt know she was sick like that. Whens the last time u spoke to your Ex? Clearly she didnt want anything to do with her Vanity ex life which probably included Prince. Ever think of that.

@12:52 PM - You're absolutely correct! If he "WANTED" to help and had done so,then that's fine. But, as you've said, "he's not "OBLIGATED". There's a difference. It's not mandatory for him to do anything. If that was his wife, then that would be different. And, for all we know, he may have tried to reach out to her over the years, and she may not have wanted to be bothered. ANYTHING that had to do with the, "Vanity" persona, she wanted nothing to do with it. And, who knows, that may have included Prince as well. We'll never know. But, other than that, he shouldn't be penalized for not paying her medical bills.

I hear y'all and I never said he was obligated..and I also said he might not have known. All I'm saying is if it hit him that hard for him to say it was 'heavy' for him, and the fact that when he found out he was so touched that he dedicated his entire show to her last minute then she was more than just some discarded ex. And honestly, for me, if someone I was very close with and loved at one time had fallen on hard times and it was life or death...and I had 6000x the amount that they needed, they would have it. That's just me. Again I'm not saying he had to, but doing so would've been just as sweet as the songs he dedicated to her postmortem. Its just a sad situation...but life, I guess.

The thing about Vanity is that she never wrote a tell all bragging about who she fucked. She dated celebs like John Stamos,Nikki Sixxx,Prince but once she was deliveted, she never through stones, never blamed anyone else for her behavior.

When you got the real spirit, you hold yourself accountable for your actions and forgive others.

It's hard to forgive others who did bad towards you. You have to forgive or you'll end up becoming one of them and hurting others.

I understand and agree with everyone who says he didn't owe her and maybe she didn't want anything that comes from the celebrity lifestyle she left behind. But now that she's passed, I'm sure the bills are still there. He could square her debts if he wanted and cared, right?

Anonymous said...

@ Prissa why would he want to square her bills - how many people you know standing in line to pay off somebody else's debt - not to mention who knows what debts Prince has - I don't get it why just cause she happens to have known someone with money that people think that person is supposed to come like fairy godmother and wave the dollar and fix everything - if he does it great but he shouldn't be labeled if he doesn't.... I don't even understand where this type of thinking comes from - I certainly don't expect anybody to come pay off my debt that I created when I pass chit I don't expect it now.... of course the death was "heavy" death is heavy especially when someone dies fairly young but honestly why should he pay her bills - let me put it to you like this - if your cousin Denise had money did drugs lived rough got saved started living right passed away had some debt would you come out your pocket and pay off her debts because you were financially better off than her... easy to say what somebody should do with their money when you got yours tightly stored away in your pocket.

I don't see anything shady about that. Some of y'all be reachin'. Damn!

Ha! She told him he was too little to throw her jn the pool. I can see Vanity, Denise or anyone saying that. It's funny and they are his memories. Their not bad memories even though she changed her life. I don't trust Gofundme accounts. Too many scammers.

I agree with all the comments that stated Prince was not obligated to help her
But why mention her at all?

1 thing I admire about Denise is that she always owned up to her past mistakes and drug abuse until the day she left here
And she was not 1 of those flip flopping Christians
She also never excepted nor or asked for anyone's kidney to help her even though she might had needed 1
Rest In Heaven Ms Denise Matthews and i wont ever forget u or your testimonies :)

The fact that Prince is a Multimillionaire and once banged her in every holes, he could have paid her medical bills.

@10:00PM The Vanity Prince knew died in 1994 when she accepted Christ as her Lord in Savior. Denise Matthews died 2/15/16. Prince may have offered to help (we will never know) and she (respectfully) turned him down.
