Recording Academy President Slams Lauryn Hill

Earlier this week Lauryn Hill explained away her absence at the Grammy Awards claiming her performance with The Weeknd had never been confirmed [click here if you missed that].

Later, after it was revealed that the real reason for her absence was that she was late, the President of the Recording Academy speaks out...

Recording Academy President Neil Portnow explained at a press conference,
"When it came to show time, we were told she was late – three minutes out, seven minutes out and she didn't make it. She didn't make the performance, she didn't get into the building on time."
"If I have to be some place on time, I figure out how to do that. But great credit to The Weekend. With all best intentions, things changed, but he killed it."

No Weekend didn't kill it. His performance was straight garbage. But I guess they appreciate he showed up and at least performed.

Why didn't they have a handler for her? Honestly given her reputation if I was doing business with her that's what I would have done.
This is why anybody buying a ticket to her show should look at it like gambling in Vegas. The girl is a mess and it breaks my heart as a former fan.

If they know she takes a a moment to get ready, maybe they should have told her that show time was 1 but really it would be 3 to insure that she would show up.

Lauryn Hill's camp's responded:
In regards to the comments this morning from The Grammys, CBS did announce Ms. Hill's performance, there were official Grammy television ads that ran for a couple of days naming Ms. Hill as a performer on the show. Her camp was unhappy about this. They had made it clear from the start that although Ms. Hill was going to attempt to make the show, she could not confirm, as there were too many logistical issues that could potentially prevent the performance from happening. The performance was also supposed to be a surprise. This was discussed with Grammy organizers, and the TV spots were pulled. As previously mentioned, Ms. Hill attempted a last minute rush to LA, to see if this could happen, but unfortunately timing that day kept it from being a reality. Ms. Hill truly appreciated the invitation, and the efforts made by all parties to try and make the performance happen.

My experience has been that people often don't know HOW to listen and the proverbial ball is often dropped. Although I could be wrong, I'm going to side with Lauryn on this one. Even if Lauryn did cancel at the last minute, I still side with her. Hollywood/the entertainment industry kept her "tapdancing" for them for a long time. She got to the point a long time ago where she could give 2 $hi@$ about Hollywood or the opinions of others. Hell, if she had something to do - she had something else to do! Liberation.

Lauryn was on stage in Boston at 1:30am the morning of the Grammys. She got off stage and flew to LA with her whole band. If they really wanted her to perform they should have let her perform with her band since she did not have a chance to work with the Weeknd before that day.

Liberation is when you can truly and totally ex-communicate yourself from the system and still effectively function. Looks like the responsibility falls on both parties. It appears that both parties were in no position to commit. She could have said no to keep from over-extending herself and they could have sought out someone else. #whatever

Miscommunication lead to complication....

She's unprofessional as hell I would never go see her perform (and she is amazing in concert) - ever - my time is just as important as hers how dare she keep her fans waiting - that is a trait I hate and think its very selfish and rude - BE ON TIME damnit.

Lauren Hill not showing up was the LEAST of the Grammy's problems.

I don't get why most of the comments is about accommodating her. Yes she is a star...but this IS a job. BE THERE ON TIME. Period.
