BET Founder Defends Zoe Saldana as Nina Simone

This week the trailer for the new Nina Simone biopic staring Zoe Saldana received huge backlash after Zoe appeared in blackface and a prosthetic nose [click here if you missed that].

BET founder Robert Johnson, and the Nina Simone biopic distributor, speaks out in Zoe's defense...

The statement from RLJ Entertainment reads,
“Zoe Saldana delivers an exceptional and mesmerizing tribute to Nina Simone. She gave her heart and soul to the role and displayed her extraordinary talent. The most important thing is that creativity or quality of performance should never be judged on the basis of color, or ethnicity, or physical likeness. Quality entertainment should be measured by the sheer force of creativity and the commitment that an actor or actress brings to the performance. We are proud to distribute the film headlined by Zoe Saldana and David Oyelowo on April 22, 2016.”

Where is the quality when all I can see is that caked up black face makeup on her face? I acknowledge that Zoe is black of Latino ethnicity but this is still black face and frankly insulting to our darker complexion sisters. Hell it's insulting to me and I'm shades lighter than Zoe. It's an insult to Nina and an insult to talented sisters who bare Nina's resemblance and could have portrayed Nina with dignity and grace instead of as a side show.

I don't have a problem with Zoe displaying her artistry for a role. The problem should be with Casting as they did a horrible job selecting the actor for the role...if she has range, then she should kill the part...but knock it off, pointing the finger at Zoe....

I wouldn't call a billion dollars "pocket change", but I definitely look at Bob Johnson differently because of that decision.

This isn't the fault of Zoe or her acting skills, this is a complete f*ck-up on casting. There are plenty of dark-skinned actresses who also can sing and pull of portraying Nina Simone, but Zoe was chosen because of....apparently she was the only one who auditioned?

the actress who plays "Crazy Eyes" would be spot on! plus she's a classically trained singer too! I like Zoe but they dropped the ball on casting. Period.

I don't give two chits who they cast as Nina Simone because it doesn't change the fact that our government is poisoning us and we all potentially risk being governed over by Donald Trump.,.... phuck a biopic and anger about black face - Zoe still getting paid so why waste your time screaming about chit you have absolutely no control over... all we can do is go see it... or don't go see it... all this internet chatter is doing is free promotion for a movie so many feel shouldn't be made.... so stop talking about it and perhaps it will go away - if they make it and nobody sees it you win ... but if you keep talking about it you will drum up interest ergo you lose....

Why does she make faces in these stills like she's purposely trying to look retarded or high.. like that is a look of someone who has that soul and depth of Nina. Looking slow does not equate that depth Nina had..

@ 8:58: 'Ergo' is one of my favorite words!

Exactly 10:51 - Why does it seem like they're trying to marginalize Ms. Simone in every way?

It's Bob's job to defend the film, hell he produced it. Remember Wendy Williams defended that Aaliyah movie on Lifetime as well. Why? Because she fronted it. I'm still pissed at him for selling BET to the white man, and I somehow doubt he got a billi for it.
