Okay, great. It's part of history and I embrace that. Now for a period piece on all the MD's who graduated from Howard or Shaw or a drama about how hard Mary Mcleod Bethune worked to get Bethune-Cookman up and running. Or even the Rockefeller'S involvement with Spelman and why they have such a large endowment today...Thanks!
Blacks can always find a role as a slave. Jennifer Lawrence and Scarlett Johanson will never beat a sister out for those slave roles.
^^^Hope that was a joke; Peace and blessings.
I'm working when this comes on sooooo....
I've never understood why so many black people shy away from and are bothered by movies/ shows regarding this subject matter. you'll never hear a jew say " oh no not another holocaust movie" ... These young kids who are emulating fetty way and blac chyna have no understanding and respect for the plight of Af-Ams thus why they are so quick to disrespect themselves and others. Now I'm all for showing af-ams in all and every arena and I would love to see a story on black colleges etc... but we should never shy away from THIS history
11:15 why cant there be a movie on jews being the owners, operators, boats, shipment selling, slavemasters, making money off slaves. Yes we already know blacks were slaves but what else?
11:15am - I understand, but we get to see other aspects of the lives of the groups you just named. Every movie about Jewish people isn't about the Holocaust. Our lives are multi-layered and the majority of Black people I know are married, live in stable communities, go to work and raise respectful children. I just want to see a movie where the protagonists just happen to be Black (a comedy or thriller.) As you know, not every narrative of is that of struggle, so I'm hoping it'll be reflected in our entertainment. Peace.
12:02 - While there were Jewish slave owners (as well as slave owners of African descent) there were very few Jewish slave owners. Actually, there were very few slave owners, period. Slave owning families intermarried to keep the money within those overwhelming WASP and Catholic/French Huguenot/French Creole families. Google it; History is based on facts, not just emotional arguments you wish were true. Have a good day either way!
Seems like Snitch is deleting the intelligent comments anymore. Some commented on Blacks as interesting protagonists in well produced movies and now it's gone
No, first it was "no not another movie portraying us as slaves I don't wanna see that shit. Now there's a movie showing us rebelling and mf's still complaining. You niggas ain't never satisfied. That or eithier the yt trolls are hard at work trying to get black folks not to watch for the fear that we might actually come together and LEARN something that could possibly help us in the future. Damm stfu whining. Watch it or don't ugh!
AMEN!!!!!! @12:02pmcheck out a vide on youtube called "Behind The Curtains" and Negroland
I'm watching it and so will my 7 year old son. He will know what happened when we got here and I will balance it out with who we were before we were sent into slavery and how we disobeyed The Almighty Yah and why we were sent into perpetual slavery. It's hard to watch it but it will help him to understand the Holy Bible a lot better.
I like it because it shows some of us did fight back and whoop arse. So yeah I want to see that. Every slave didn't just take the beatings and I like that it shows these sprites for who they are. Evil
I started watching it on Crackle but have questions as to the accuracy of the story. For example, how could the runaway slave carve the directions into the wood when most slaves couldn't read or write and it was against the law to teach a slave to read and write? And why would he carve them if other slaves couldn't read the words?Had to stop watching when woman drowned her newborn and said: "he's free now." Reminds me of "Beloved". Not sure about this show.I will try again later to watch this when my logical, thinking mind turns off :(
it was better than i thought it would be. the best part. it's showing the hatefulness of white folks of like now in 2016 when they punching us in the face at rallies. there's the white saviors of course, but they aren't the focus so i cant tolerate it. they need to stop with all that hip hop music though. cut it out john legend.
@2:51 The fact that some slaves did know how to read is not inaccurate but that was a good question. There were laws that prohibited it but because the slave owners wanted slaves to follow their interpretation of the bible they had to first teach them to read it. Mistresses often taught the slaves as well because they wanted them to run errands and things of that sort. White children not really undestanding the seriousness of the issue would innocently share books and knowledge as well. Sometimes slaves would sneak and sit outside their classes and listen to the instruction. Most slaves took their gift of literacy and secretly shared it with other slaves as well.
The acting is superb. The cast is tight. I am tuning in next week.
So Wednesday night?hmm.
I'm with you 7:12. Shame on US for wanting to erase our history. My entire life I've kept Roots & Chaka Zulu on my screen. It helps keep my lights on. When I go work and they're smiling in my face, I remember. Unfortunately, the dark is comfortable for many of US.
