Oprah Winfrey Stars in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

Oprah Winfrey is starring in and producing a HBO movie about Henrietta Lacks...

Henrietta Lacks was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells—taken without her knowledge in 1951—became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, and more.

Henrietta's cells have been bought and sold by the billions, yet she remains virtually unknown, and her family can't afford health insurance.

Oprahs HBO movie is based on Rebecca Skloot's book, "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks"

@10:23 I think shes playing her daughter not Henrietta...

@10:16 back then you didnt need consent to take samples... So they have no legal right however I do agree morally something should have been given... Her family does control certain rights however that dosnt always equal money.

Oh no not Oprah trying to act with that corn ball southern accent, she is a brilliant business woman but she sucks at acting.

i hope she gives the family a cut of the profits, otherwise she is the same as the people she's trying to condemn.

I just learned about this lady this semester! And the part about the family not being able to afford health insurance is BULL. I'm sure they've been well compensated for Henrietta's contribution. Not nearly enough as it was worth, but enough to have health insurance.

They have not been compensated. If you read the book you will know that the medical community says with the types of cells she has, there's no way to calculate what she'd be owed.

They honored her by naming the cells after her, more or less.

Also, the family is very uneducated on all levels. We';re talking about 1st cousins getting married and having children together uneducated.

Again, It's a really good book, Henrietta's youngest child has a lot of anger and rage and they think it is because of his exposure to cancer while his mother was carrying him. Also, Johns Hopkins treated a lot of black people and for free and they are long rumored to have experimented on blacks. You were often warned not to be near the hospital late at night for fear of being kidnapped.

When Henrietta died, her cancers were still metastasizing and growing, her cells were that fierce. Her cancer, they believe was a result of many STD's she got from her cousin/husband.

Again, her story is a very good read - you won't put it down. Shouts out to Rebecca Skloot for writing it.

Thank you 2:31pm.

@2:31

But one of Henrietta's sons, Lawrence, recently wrote a book about the family in 2013. It's called "HeLa Family stories". Can't be too uneducated.

@3:52
They probably told their story to an author that more than likely sought them out.

I'm happy they're coming out with a movie. It's sad how they used this woman's cells and didn't compensate her family. I read half of the book and couldn't finish it....I was bothered. But I will watch the movie.
