The Get Down Falls Short?

Netflix series The Get Down, staring Jaden Smith, starts out strong but then loses steam...

According to reports The Get Down pulled in 3 million viewers during its premiere period but then dropped off by a staggering 40% and kept dropping even further each week.

Comparatively, Netflix series Orange is the New Black and Fuller House pulled in over 15 million viewers.

Jaden kissing that white boy.....kill it for me,it was already corny looking ..

It should have been SO much better than it was. Some of the performances were good, but the writing was marginal. And the storyline with the drug running mother and the guy she was grooming? It could have been so interesting but damn was it boring!

("Roadies" was poorly written and just got cancelled too, so I think TV writers just aren't who they use to be.)

If you ever get a chance, keep an eye out for "Last Hustle in Brooklyn" clips. The full movie isn't available, but it really shows how thriving Bed Stuy was before gentrification.

Too much gay shit on TV. Does anybody notice that MOST of the gay shit and transgender shit involves men? There are VERY few women trying to change into men if any. This is mainly about men

It is a great show akin to a black "Goonies" or "The Sandlot" or "Radio Flyer" an adventure, urban, fantasy show. Extremely creative. The problem is white people and (sadly) even black people only want to see black people portrayed as "REAL" anything other than a gritty urban drama is perceived a s corny or gay. Apparently we like the box that white people put us in.

@10:47 - I agree with some of what you're saying, but as a person of color (or anyone who likes decently written material anymore) you have to seek it out. Network TV and now Netflix and cable have TERRIBLE writing anymore. There's better content online (Awkward Black Girl as an example. And even "New Girl" has a character of color written as a man in full, not a stereotype.)

The Get Down's writing wasn't great and it wasn't paced well. The action was in fits and starts and the club scenes were boring. (How do you scenes in a nightclub boring?) Did they do ANY actual research on the 70's?

I actually liked The Get Down but the pace was waaaaaay too slow and the writing didn't get interesting until the third episode. I actually starting watching it, got bored and didn't watch it again until three weeks later. I forced myself and eventually it turned out well. I had such high hopes for this show but it fell short, way short. However, the historical references and shots of Brooklyn were exceptional.

The boredom of it all

The Get Down was good. I would think viewership would fall when you can watch the entire season in a few hours.

I've tried to sit through the first episode twice now. It's boring as hell, that girl's singing voice is annoying...and all that stuff about the evil developer and my dad only wants me to sing gospel. It's TIRED and formulaic. I wanted to like it but fail.

My homegirl told me it's really good but starts off slow. I haven't been able to make myself sit down and watch it tho. The preview I saw looks corny to me but I still think that I'll start watching and love it.

This is exactly what happened with Empire....Nas is one of the executive producers and it is widely known amongst the ol hip-hop heads that Gay stuff is a "no-no"! Maybe they will cut it off next season. I'd like to see it back and I saw no need for writing the Gay stuff into this much needed show!!!
