Lavar Ball Explains Hefty Price Tag for ZO2

Last week NBA hopeful Lonzo Ball's ZO2 signature gym shoe went on sale for a whopping $495 [click here if you missed that].

Lonzo's father Lavar Ball explains the shoe's worth...

Lavar Ball tells Fox Sports
“I expected this reaction. The fact that people are losing sight — they’re looking at the price tag and not understanding that Lonzo’s shoe is symbolic. That comes with a price tag.”
“Symbolic as he’s the first one ever to come in here without even playing a game and have his own brand. It’s not just a shoe you just go in a store or something like that and you say, ‘You know what, let me get the Kyrie (Irving), the LeBron (James) … by the way, throw in the ZO2.’
“ZO2s mean something. That’s why the price tag is like that. That’s what the shoe’s worth.”
“That shoe is symbolic already on the fact that he’s coming in with his own brand. Nobody’s ever done that. So if I sell 50 shoes, who cares? It’s a family thing. It’s for the family, I make them all for Lonzo. Lonzo has his own shoe.”
“It’s a family thing. See, my son will wear my shoe. It’s a family thing. I’m giving him a choice. He can wear any shoe he wants, but why wouldn’t he want to wear something that’s your own?”
The shoe has reportedly sold between 300 and 500 pair.

Meanwhile former football star Chad Johnson proudly showed off his purchase.

I agree we spend it on Gucci and everything else. Might as well support a up and coming black man! ✌🏾

I support high end brands with proven quality. I never wear basketball shoes because I have large feet and I think their design isn't flattering for those of us with big feet, I'll say that Lavar Ball speaks like an asshole and it makes supporting him really difficult.

9:57 makes a really good point. This man has actually said disparaging things about the Black community in the past and now wants our support for sneakers that look like short bus shoes? Nah. He can miss me with this.

10:01 - I remember when Black kids started killing each other Michael Jordan's tennis shoes. When he was asked about it MJ said, "It's not my problem." That mofo didn't care about his people dying over his shoes but I bet you ten to one, you got a pair of Jordan's in your closet.

i don't support high end brands and i don't support a low end brand with a high price point. i think people wasting $500 on a pair of shoes is ridiculous. but i also think that same thing about people spending $200 on a pair of shoes. my opinion has nothing to do with me thinking this male is a complete idiot either.

10:07 and 10:09 thank you. People need to pay themselves first, not just give their hard earned money away for worthless baubles.

I get tired of the "support a black person" mantra simply because they're black. Before anyone spends $500 to make another mofo rich, I hope you pay your bills and have a college tuition going for your kids, or your nieces and nephews first! Hell if you really wanna help why don't you give that money to a charity or something. And no, I don't have a closet full of Jordans, Yeezis, or Gucci or anything else crazy expensive in my closet. People always try to shame you by saying "support a black business" but then some of those same black businesses turn around around and pull a Shea Moisture on that ass! So NO I will not be throwing my money at any black person simply because they're black. And last but not least those shoes are UGLY anyway.

Say it again for the people in the cheap seats 10:43! Re: Shea Moisture, they communicated they don't want my money anymore by whitewashing those ads. Hell, even Target will throw a person of color into a commercial for balance.
