WGN Canceles Underground

Earlier this month there were rumors WGN was planning to cancel runaway slave drama Underground [click here if you missed that].

The hammer has fallen...

WGN execs announced yesterday the network was moving in a different direction.

Meanwhile Underground producer John Legend assured fans the series will find a new home.

This could actually work out better for them... Now that they have a fanbase a more established network could pick them up and increase views... not to mention netflix...

Pick cotton elsewhere!

I keep hearing this show is great... but I havent watched it yet. I'm in slave movie overload. One part of me feels this resurgence of slave movies and TV is a subtle jab to remind black folks to "know our place" and be happy with what we have now...cuz it could always be worse. The other part understands the importance of keeping our history alive (because these kids are learning a severely whitewashed history calling slaves "immigrants and ish) but I feel like everyone forgets about the history we had BEFORE we were slaves.

It was that rich history that led us to us becoming slaves. We were the best architects, agriculturers, mathematicians, healers in the world. That's why we were enslaved....because they wanted qualified and capable peoples to build this country from the ground up because they sure couldnt do it. They hated us for being smarter, stronger, and resilient and obviously still do to this day.

When people say other Africans sold slaves to the US and Britain that's only partially correct.... Africa traded slaves with Britain IN EXCHANGE FOR LAND OWNERSHIP IN THE AMERICAS. Most had no idea the slaves were being tortured and mistreated in mass and when they found out, they stopped trading with them. This led to white folks straight kidnapping Africans and conquering civilizations who were planning on coming for that ass to recoup their "investment". That's why we asked for 40 acres and a mule in recompense for slavery. They owed us that!!! Still do....

Make a movie or TV showabout THAT shit!!!

R in NYC says:

I'm over the slavery genre. We have other stories to tell.

All I want from the TV gods is for NY Undercover to be released on DVD and seasons 2-5 of Living Single to be released as well. Not interested in any new content.

For those who are in slave narrative overload, I understand because I too was in the same position.

After several people encouraged me to watch this show, a few weeks ago I binged watched Season 1 and 2.

Take a chance and watch this show.

The storyline and the actors portrayals’ of historic figures are spot on (Aisha Hinds plays the hell out of Harriet Tubman).

Before you just say “nah, I’m good” just watch it. If you watch it and still feel that way, cool, at least you can say you gave the show a chance.

I am hopeful that another network will pick this show up.

I also agree and applaud Magnus 21 Gunz comment as well as the comment that we need more shows/ doc series that deal with today's stories.

The entire Atlantic slave trade narrative is a BIG FAT LIE! Stop expecting white folks to tell you the truth about who you are.

I love this show because it shows how smart and self reliant we used to be. I love to see black men kick scary whitety arse.

For ppl who created ALL of civilization we consistently define our ancestors being enslaved.

I understand paying homage to the ancestors once a year or so. But picture this, thriving civilizations, governments, universities, family lineage since the ooze. Crops as far as the eye could see.

White ppl were jealous as fuck. They didn't have the knowledge or backbone to create their own society. So they stole us. Because a bitch don't steal land, to buy ppl. Of course some Africans sold others. But I believe the initial money paid by YT was just to pretend they were going to be fair.

IJS WE have been here since the dawn of time. The mouth of the Nile is in Africa. Let's start there.

Fun Fact: Julius Caesar and his soldiers would ride to Africa for trade, especially wild animals used in the colliseum. Because the African men and women were very capable troops. Caesar reportedly said something to the effect, "get what you gon' get and leave because everybody down there knows how to fight. Ahaaaa. That was respect. We are and have been everywhere.

I encourage anyone that has not seen an episode to please watch. You will be hooked/compelled to watch another episode and another. I will definitely support Underground on whatever station/platform it lands. It was great to for me and mom to watch together & begin to explore our family tree's slavery branches.

@9:14am please listen to 11:06am. That's exactly what I was going to reply to you. It's so much deeper. Slavery is just the setting. This show focuses on the fearlessness, mental, spiritual, and physical superiority and resilience of the Black race. That's why they're trying to cancel it.

Believe me, if it was the same weak, tired, "yezzur bawse" slave narrative we all know, it wouldn't be at risk for cancellation.

@9:14

I feel you 100%! Great analysis.

For those who haven't seen the show it is about the resistance, something many of us know very little about these days. It demonstrates how people in bondage can escape their captors--once you understand realize you're in bondage. This show is well written and action-packed. It's not a "typical" slave show/movie (as if there is anything typical about slavery).

That show had 400,000 tune in at its last episode, the ratings declined. Millennials don't give no phucks about tv and baby boomers too old to watch and too broke to pay, and 25-39 yr olds are tired after work. Get rid of tv all together, especially these slave shows. Most millennials aren't even racist this is theirclast ditch attempt to keep racism alive

Black history didn't start with slavery it was interrupted by slavery...

I troll it like I see it. said...

Good!!! I'm over the slave shit, that's goes for the hood gangster movies and depressing ass movies with black folks being oppressed and looking depressed and crazy like that damn Fences movie. These kinds of movies keep us in a sunken place mindset I'm over it. I will only support positive, uplifting movies. We have had enough trauma and depression since colonialism. I'm tired of reliving trauma, I want to deal with the now!!!

I heard it was a good show but there just weren't enough viewers to translate into $$$ gorgeous the network. Plus a lot of people just aren't interested in slavery themed TV shows or movies

How in the hell did my phone auto correct "for" to "gorgeous"?

Where is Oprah when you need her lol...She can pick up all those BS Tyler Perry drama's but can't air the truth. I support underground but fact is I never knew of the WGN network until they started airing this show. Typical when you start making white folks some money they will drop your ass as if you never existed.
