Who’s running Def Jam? Seems like labels are a waste these days.

Yes, labels are useless if your management team is right,  your accountant and business managers are trustworthy, your lawyer on point, your publicist is hot, you record and mix in house, execute and fund your own videos and marketing materials, you put your digital out through tunecore or the orchard, have a fanbase, get a booking agent, cop your own publishing deal, and a distro deal if you end up big enough to have your shit in big box music stores (best buy, target, walmart), exploit all your ancillary income options, and fund pre production/post production and tour support. If you have a big enough fanbase you can afford to pay for big name features just like the labels do. indie touring if its lit can be stupid lukrative and you don't have to give 30% of that tour check to the label off the top before you pay your overhead (band,travel/stay),  manager (10-20%),  tour manager (paid per show),  lawyer (6-10% if aways on call OR by the hour),  and agent (10-6%).

you can't expect a dumb nigga to hands all that mentioned above lead his team and drive that ship. that has to come from the artist. labels make sense when an artist simply can't manage all that responsibility and development of a business on your own. but when you sign YOU ARE NO LONGER THE OWNER OF THE BUSINESS. YOH HAVE SOLD YOUR BUSINESS. Stop complaining August. You dont call the shots. How many times do these guys learn this lesson. wave after wave of shelved, money pit artists end up in this same position.

many people are doin this indie - its possible but hard.  you can't have it both ways,  though. tyler the creator is a good example.  he was lucky enough to have ex universal music execs for managers so they saw the vision and know the business. chance the rapper is doing this now taking other deals outside of the traditional label system. wiz khalifa and mac miller didn't sign until competing sold out tours, releasing some hits unsigned, and aquired millions of followers which totally changes their negotiation position. but even still, mac miller has been completely burried since he signed.

the fact is, thou can't sign a 360 slave contact for 3 albums and 5 options (basically 8 albums they RELEASE) plus a cut of everything you do outside of music and then ask for your freedom. They tellin August hes cut off and he better blow himself up again if he wants that record to drop. HA!

10:10 okay girrrrrlllll so that explains why artists disappear after 2 or 3 albums or sometimes after just the debut album. Especially if they ain't tryin to freak with the people behind the scenes LMAO SMFH

@TeamLesbian exactly right. a label is just an extended line of credit and the music masters, your name image and likeness is held as collateral like a house until you recoup, deliver and release your albums and turn them a profit. niggas really don't understand that, the bank owns the house, and no matter how much ownership you feel over what comes out of your head, yoh still down own the house on paper until its paid for. You can live in it and call it yours but we all know what it is . labels DONT have to actually release your album after you turn it in, that's why A&R have so much power. the label can stop everything if the A&R can't steer an album where the label wants it to go. and all the promises in the contract are one sided. if you aren't advanced (which is how you get your upfront production budget that's not personal use signing bonuses rarely exist anymore) then you may not see another dime EVER as they continue to spend on your behalf. 6k a month label publicist, all hard costs, all label employees hours billed to you for instance - it adds up fast. suddenly that 50k advance on THAT many albums is NOT enough money. its all exciting until you realize you still need a job to pay your rent. that happens ALL the time. then you turn around and find out you have 350k in label expenses charged on your books that you don't even have the right to approve before its spent. You're stick until that is paid hahaha good luck. you pay more, they spend more. You're stuck. This really should be illegal. when an artists changes labels the new label basically buys out their old debt, ads it to new bill. that's not discussed publicly fans wouldn't understand that. so its just "i left now im here"

labels sign artists like august so they can claim losses and make the artist carry the debt for life. Its a lot like when movie studios seem to purposely release bad movies. its all losses on the books and used to lower their massive corporate taxes while still getting themselves and friends paid throughout production.

i used to work at Sony music and universal music group. swiched to movie advertising for movie studios. its a racket.
