Gabrielle Union's scripted drama 'Being Mary Jane' is having trouble hanging on to viewers...
According to The LA Times ratings for the second week of 'Being Mary Jane' pulled in 2.8 million viewers, down 15% from last weeks 3.3 million who turned in the for premiere episode.
Over 4 million viewers turned in for the feature length pilot that aired last May.
That's because no mature adult watch BET...the show would stand a better chance on TVONE, VH1, or OWN network. Not to mention Gabby's decision to stick w D-buck$ has probably lost her a few women fans.

It is a good show. The problem could be that after the cheated on-baby news and sudden engagement, women are a bit pissed at Gabby and her "It's me, not him" attitude. I saw her on a few interviews promoting her show and she looked pained and embarrassed. She knows what others are thinking about her right now. Unfortunately for her, not only does she have to suck it up publicly, but it could possibly be hurting her ratings as well.

ReplyDeleteI think the writing and plot is realistic. But her so-called acting adds nothing to the show's plot, which is why it has little depth. The struggles of a successful, intelligent and beautiful sister having to lower herself enough to settle for someone else's man really could have resonated with the audience if they had picked a talented actress with more range than this this lock jaw, tight-faced stoic.

This is one of the reasons Savannah doesn't mess w/ her bc she went behind her back saying Lebron would never marry her and tried to hook him up with Sanaa. This is a fact. Cadillac Records:current DWade situation, Tyler Perry Movie: refer to mary jane w/o family issue. I don't think they will cancel the show, but the Akils write well for only a few seasons (The Game) IMO. I hope they give it at least 3-4 seasons.

I also think MOST of the ownership in this debacle should be placed on him. He's the one that apparently has ZERO self control, self respect, or self esteem. He was the one that grew up with a jacked up family and even w money and fame he is creating the same jacked up family dynamic for his own children. Not saying he should have stayed w his ex wife...but there IS a proper way to exit a relationship believe it or not.
Furthermore, the mother of this newest baby...ppl are saying he should pay up. I think he should pay a FAIR amt for his child's well being, but it should mirror exactly what she contributes. There shouldn't be a monetary reward for bringing a child into the world based solely on the strength that the dad is rich bc if he was poor what would she/us be saying? Well the kid prob wouldn't even be here.
Gabby isn't a victim...i think she is going through escalated commitment. She is riding w it bc she's fought so hard for it, eventhough it appears to not be the best thing to do w regard to her career.

ReplyDeleteI pretty much knew this was going to happen. When they bring in something that rivals Breaking Bad, Mad Men, or Nip/Tuck is when I'll tune it. Why don't they just take some black author's work (like what FX is doing with James McBride's Song Yet Sung) and call it a day? These books already have the fan base and the foundation needed.

science fiction > alternate history ), or The Cutting Season (mystery).
They could even use non-fiction and turn it into something. Capital Men (not written by a black author, but dammit it's good). You can't tell me they couldn't make a mini series documenting the black congressmen of the Reconstruction Era like HBO's done John Adams (based off David McCullough). How about The Hemingses of Monticello or The Warmth of Other Suns?
It's almost like they don't care about their reputation (are they even trying?). Oh well. All I know is that I refuse to watch this garbage they keep putting out and I refuse to budge until they get on AMC, FX's, and HBO's level.

Maybe people who know this story as real don't want to watch it because it sickens them or makes them uncomfortable. The mature type of people that would best understand the storyline are the ones complaining about tv not having any quality characters so why the hell would they want to watch Mary Jane when damn near every character is trifling? The movie was actually enough, 2 hours of this storyline was all that was needed.
I mean really, who does this show appeal to? Not white people, not married men/women, not victims of cheating and homewrecking, not the typical BET audience and it can only attract the portion of Tyler Perry fans that don't mind the pathetic black women storyline that he LOOOOOOVES, but that's probably not enough watchers to make the show a long running success. Not many black people want to watch a show that's going to make them disgusted, so oh well for Gabby, she should have talked them into making a tv series out of something that the black audience was actually demanding, QUALITY characters with morals, there's not a demand for this kind of story so why do it???? Didn't THE GAME start losing because it had too much trifling whoring ghetto antics

Mary Jane is a Stereotypical Joke on "Successful" black women. I thought the show was a comedy until I realized Mary Jane is 80% of my college and grad school exes. I was immature but now they are blowing up my phone playing themselves as I'm getting married. This show is satirizing a sad time for black women...

If she had played the quiet mistress role and waited until the divorce and custody situation had settled and then present herself as his new lady no one would have such harsh words for her now. ReplyDeleteGabby lived for the excitement of being the winner! She made subliminal remarks and directly disrespected Mrs. Wade whenever she got the chance. She was photo shopping shit, giving interviews and taunting this woman with her own children. So THAT'S why the whole town laughing at Gabby. She deserves it and a lot more. Nobody really cares about her or her "decision" to stay. What the moral of the story is, is that she for some strange reason thought she was hot shit and that dwayne wasn't happy with Sio that's how she had the opportunity to infiltrate. But it had nothing to do with Sio, it has to do with Wade. So know Gabby's self esteem has been deflated, you saw it in that humiliating walk to the car that TMZ shot. It's no longer funny now that there's another winner! And this winner won the jackpot because Wade isn't taking anybody else's kids after this behavior hit the net. Gabby is humble now, even quiet. The unnecessary taunting tweets have stopped. It's not about the ring the HEAT told him to give her to soften his image. She isn't laughing anymore, she gets it but refuses to admit it. There was no break while filming think like a man or why post pics of him helping with the lines. He fucked this lighter girl (her weakness) around valentines day and nutted all up in her. That's it and it's good for her and she deserves the pain.
So the reason nobody gives a fuck about wade and or blaming him for his part in the situation is because even if him and Sio were at war, bitter ex's Gabby had NO business in that what so ever but she made it about her and that's why SHE's getting the business right now.
Regardless of what Dwayne does with his dick or to other women he will always be known as and spoken of as a MAN.
Gabby has lost her title as woman or lady. She will forever be known as a home wrecking,nasty slut who doesn't respect other women or marriage vows. A person who pretends to have it all together but in real life is an insecure knob slobber and live in baby sitter. She's his homie lover friend.
What about when those boys get just a little older and dig up all she's done and said to THEIR mother? Can you imagine how she really treats them when Wade leaves her there to baby sit while he goes fucking?
Pretty sure the show is well written but even though people know they watching a show they still want to believe in the person playing the character. Hell we cant have Charlie Sheen playing a priest we need to believe what we watching for half hour.,, shiiiit 8 minutes just to believe this trick is positive is all it would take.
