Yes, love it so far!
I'm still mad at FOX for cancelling EMPIRE and STAR.
Me too LaLa. I for see the same with this show. I want be watching.
I tried watching but it's all over the place. Nothing like the book and Yaya was an odd choice for the lead. Her acting is too blah for me.
is this a ad??
Never seen it, but I will now be checking it out, I'm always here for a beautiful melanated cast, with an engaging storyline. It looks good.
I'm glad Snitch posted this. I've watched the first 2 episodes and have all these thoughts in my head about this show and wonder if anyone shares the same perspective:
I gave the show a chance, esp. since I am a fan of Yaya when she was on Top Model. I don't think her acting was good on The Resident, but I thought she was perfect for this role. Even though I like the black representation, the visuals, and the storyline, and omg the all-star Black cast!--the show just falls flat for me. I didn't fall in love with it in the first episode, but I'm still watching to give it a chance. There are some flaws that I just can't get over:
The first episode moves the plot along too quickly, and although I understand YaYa's character's motive--she starts her scandalous stuff way too soon, making me not care too much for her character. The writers should have developed her character for a couple of episodes so that we could sympathize for her when she starts infiltrating the billionaire family to take over. This is important--it's what made How to Get Away with Murder so successful--we sympathized with Annalise because we knew her backstory.
Although the plot is strong, the writing is quite weak, and at some points unbelievable. For many scenes with long dialogues, it feels like they're having the conversation for the sake of giving a backstory to the audience--but these conversations would have already happened in reality. For instance, the tense dialogue between the power hungry father (played by legendary Joe Morton) and the daughter who wants her stake in power as well goes on for more than 5 minutes in a board room. However, this is not realistic, because this conversation would have happened long ago, and many times before. Another instance is the scene with Morris Chestnut's (and his fine ass) character and his wealthy white friend he grew up with. Same issue, where the white friend talks about their friendship, and Morris' character talks about the friends' white privilege--dialogue goes on for a long time, and these dudes are in their 30's it shouldn't have been the first time this conversation happened, or there shouldn't have been such misunderstanding if they were indeed best friends.
What really makes me roll my eyes is how unrealistic it is for anyone to infiltrate a billionaire's family without them doing a background check, or sniffing out their motives. Wealthy families have a lot to lose, and even have kidnapping insurance. Even though she is trying to get into the society, How Yaya's character is able to get access to certain spaces and places on their property, and behave certain ways around these folks without getting kicked out by security, or at the very least, investigated, is quite baffling and is a flaw I just can't get over. They don't figure anything out until Yaya (I'm just using her name at this point because I don't know the character's name) gives them bits and pieces of information.
Yaya's daughter is miscast. Yaya looks so young--like she's in her mid to late 20's, and her daughter I think is supposed to be a teenager. So in their interactions when Yaya is scolding her daughter, it looks weird.
Love the Black history and black hair references, but at times it's a bit too much, even for me. Focus more on the story.
I just think the writing is flat/one dimensional. They need someone like Shonda Rhimes to write for the show. She's really talented at creating in-depth plots with twists and turns, and makes you care about/or hate certain characters. The show has too much style and not enough substance to carry it through multiple episodes or even seasons.
Its truly terrible writing. As beautiful and talented as the cast are, even they can not save this crap fest. I'll try and bear it until it gets cancelled to support the folks employed by the show. But it almost feels like a waste, especially of Joe Morton's time.
It’s a damn shame Joe Morton is reduced to this kind of sh!t. Bruh would be a major player in Hollywood if they weren’t so threatened by Black folk.
I haven’t watched and won’t.
I am not watching cuz i know its getting cancelled after one season. The ratings are baaaaaaaad
I watched the first episode and I didn't like it and no plans to continue watching it... the story line is too boring for me.
I like it. I'm in.
it's full of chocolate beauty and gorgeous fashions and hair... yay positives
the writing is weak and some of the cast are weak - I'm gonna watch, but I'll be glad when we can give these stories to black networks (no not BET, OWN is kinda doing the thing) so they can truly flourish - I feel some of the mis-steps taken are Fox directed and that's why these things don't really pan out for these shows on these networks....
It's a good out of the box theme for a story and I'm here for it until it's gone...
Great Commentary Anonymous at 10:55. I could not have said it Better myself. I feel the EXACT same way. Keep Watching.
@10:55 not Shonda Rhimes, I like her but I don't want to see a bunch of interracial relationships and stuff. With your commentary maybe YOU should write for them.
Seriously!
ha ha i'm actually a research scientist and so I do write for a living, which explains the critical eye--but i suck at creative writing. Thanks for the compliment though.
Perhaps if Shonda and Jordan Peele (to balance Shonda's propensity for interracial relationships) were both writers for the show, it would be amazing!!
Watch the movie Brother from another planet starring Joe Morton, a great film.
Debbi Morgan cannot save this show.
Joe Morton (though he was the best thing about Episode 1) cannot save this show.
Keep the plot (or go with what was in the book), hire new writers, new wardrobe/stylist and get a cast that doesn't look to be in the same age range. I couldn't tell the children from some of the adults. The lady that played Michell'e in that Lifetime biopic shouldn't be cast as a teen (or really young adult).
If they wanted to go with an over-the-top kind of personality for the lead, Eva Marcille would've been a better choice.
I’m not watching shit else on Fox ever again. They’ll cancel this shit in a heartbeat. No thanks
I agree 11:21--Eva would be better for casting because she has that attitude. It's funny because Eva and Yaya were competitors for Top Model.
Thank you 10:55 NICE
I've seen this show it was called revenge on ABC
