Team USA Olympians Sha-Carri Richardson and Christian Coleman faced charges on Friday in Orange County.
The arrests followed a traffic stop in Winter Garden after a deputy reported Richardson, 25, was driving an Aston Martin at more than 100 miles per hour.
A deputy reported noticing the track-and-field sprinter changing lanes, “following too close,” and “flashing” the Aston Martin’s headlights “to get cars out of” her way.
According to the report, Richardson told the deputy, “her back tire was underinflated ... the car was new ... she did not mean to go the speed she was traveling ... She offered that her phone had hit buttons and changed the car’s settings.”
Olympian Twanisha Terry arrived at the traffic stop in a white Audi, and Coleman, a gold medalist, arrived in a black Jeep with an expired tag, according to the deputy’s report.
Coleman, the 2018 IAAF World Indoor Champion in the 60m, "returned to the back" of the Jeep, “dropping an object in the grass,” and ”continued to refuse to leave,” a deputy wrote, according to a report.
The deputy reported Terry complied with orders and was allowed to leave, and Richardson identified Coleman as her boyfriend.
A deputy found “a glass smoking device in the center console” of Coleman’s Jeep that had “a small amount of a green leafy plant material clinging to the bowl area,” according to the arrest report.
Orange County deputies arrested Richardson and Coleman and took them to the Booking and Release Center at the Orange County Jail, and Ace Wrecker towed their cars, records show.
On Friday, an Orange County prosecutor filed a case against Richardson on one count of dangerous excessive speeding in excess of the speed limit. Her bond was $500, and her arraignment is on Feb. 25.
A prosecutor filed a case against Coleman on two first-degree misdemeanors: Resisting arrest without violence and possession of drug paraphernalia. His bond was $1,000, and his arraignment is on Feb. 26.
