Shaboozy Addresses Grammy Speech Backlash


Over the weekend recording artists Shaboozey & Jelly Roll won the Grammy Award for 'BEST COUNTRY DUO/GROUP PERFORMANCE.' 

In his acceptance speech Shaboozey, the son of Nigerian immigrants, dedicated his win to the 'immigrants who literally built this country.' 

Shaboozey clarifies his remarks, claiming it was not his intention erase the contributions of Black Americans...

This apology is just him trying to further express what he said originally. Immigrants may have contributed to this country, but indigenous black Americans built it. It was our ancestors’ bodies, voices, and perseverance that made it possible for his parents to even come here for a better life. I wish folks would stop trying to gloss over that fact.

I get what he means. What an immigrant would say and feel with no reference, referral to or awareness of the dismissive part - just immigrant mentality without meaning it that way. Glad he’s addressed it and moving on. I’m still a fan and still glad he won!
