Underground Too Expensive for OWN

Last week John Legend confirmed rumors that his critically acclaimed slave drama Underground had been canceled by WGN [click here if you missed that].

Oprah Winfrey explains why Underground won't find a home at the OWN network...

In a press conference discussing the next season of Queen Sugar Oprah admits,
“I can’t afford Underground. It cost twice as much to make as Queen Sugar. As a matter of fact, my dear friend John Legend called me personally and asked me about it, but we’d already been talking about how we could make it work, but it’s, like, $5 million an episode, so we can’t afford it. It’s not cheap, I think because it’s a period piece.”
"And also, it doesn't have - I think the highest number I saw was like a 0.4 or something. It has the social media following, but it doesn't have the numbers that can justify it as a business, for me, at this stage in my business, to spend $5 million an episode."
”We really tried to make it work. I wanted to make it work because I think it’s a good show. I wanted to be able to save that show, but it did not make good business sense for me.”

Why would a modern day slave mammy like Oprah want to invest in a show about strong Blacks rising up? So no surprise there.

Oprah is obsessed with Slave movies. Black people are still slaves in her mind, herself included.

As educated as she is you would think she'd be producing films about how the ancient black civilizations created Universities that have the same blueprint as today. Or how the Greek philosophers such as Socrates were taught by Africans.

She'd rather have us viewing images of chattel slavery for black history month. As if that is all blacks have ever been.

She's a shucking and jiving aunt Jemima.

5 million an episode??????? Damn! Well I know I don't contribute to the numbers because I don't have cable so I watch it online at 353online.com shrugs

@DeepSeas

I think it's hard for them southerners to shake that slave thinking. Indoctrinated.

Cost way more than $5 million an episode, I saw it first hand. I heard it was closer to $20 and they were over budget with 3 weeks left of shooting. I could have been streamlined but wasn't. I'm upset, it was a fun project to be a part of.

Why would Oprah pay 5 mil an episode for a show yall niggas aint even watching?? How the fucc is that a smart business move? If you want to make dumbass investments with your money then go ahead but Ms Winfrey didnt become a billionaire by being a dummy investor. And yall wonder why Blacks are behind..

10:34 ~ Please calm down. And OWN has it's own slave narratives re: Queen Sugar and it's depiction of Black women as bed wenches and Black men as ex-cons. But you're right. Oprah does nothing without getting orders first, and obviously someone doesn't want "Underground" produced. Probably because the writing is great. I wasn't a fan, but can concede it was a well made show.

So launch a Go Fund Me page then.

I can't wait for someone to pick up this show so yall will shut the hell up with your wacky conspiracy theories. Why would Whitey care if you watch a show about slaves uprising?? Yall watched Cosby Show for years and almost none of you are doctors, lawyers or married with no side children. Sit.

@7:04, ALL slave movies and shows are created to subconsciously make YOU feel inferior. It does not matter that these fictitious slaves rose up or are rebelling because in real life, all rebellions were SQUASHED. Get a fucking clue. This had nothing to do with Black people be strong lmao

@DeepSeas, how is Oprah obsessed with slave movies but she didn't invest in this one? lol Clearly, she's not to obsessed. Name the last slave movie or show she was on?

@10:56, fuck outta here. Oprah does not take orders. YOU do. And I suspect you aren't even fully employed so you probably are your own "boss"...broke and all lol

Preach @10:34 & @11:10! Broke negros always have the most to say about what rich negros should be doing with their money lol They can't make the money themselves so they'd rather dictate from the sidelines how another person's money should be spent.

And yes, the white man could give two shits about a fictional slave uprising story. They don't care about shit that didn't happen lol.

Now, white ppl do care if someone tried to create a big budget Haitian Revolution film or series. There's been a lot of low budget ones about the subject though....budget too low to influence the masses.

No matter what you all think the of Oprah this is a business decision

"And yall wonder why Blacks are behind"

Anyone who uses this statement must be on welfare. Don't know about yall but I aint "behind" shit. Don't say "blacks", say all the niggas in my circle.

Carry on.

What legal businesses do you own? Can you direct us there so we can support you? (Waits for excuse)

You must have meant it was over-budget by $20m overall, not $20m per episode, but still, they could have cut costs. The writers and directors need to figure out how to get twice as many episodes out of the same sets, and they need to write scripts that require fewer shooting locales. They already film half of the eps in the woods. $5m per ep is shocking.

Tyler Perry is the master of this. His shows are achingly slow in pace, but that is how he controls costs.

This show is awesome and they probably don't want it on the air because it shows black folks beating the white mans arse.

Bottom line....the show is expensive to make but the ratings are too low to justify funding it. The show maybe good but evidently a lot of people just are not that interested in watching slavery based tv shows whether it's about an uprising or not.

11:10 you made me choke!LMBAO

Oprah has access to too much money to say she can't afford it. Just say you're not interested in funding a show that stands for everything you're not about. You would soon die before showing the ultimate whites any sign of racial pride or connection to your history.

John Legend, get your knee pads ready! It's gonna take all the fag you've got to keep this show rolling.

5:06 NOT ALL THE FAG. OK! I am done with this thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!

Oprah hates on anything slavery themed since Beloved bombed at the box office.

Just an observation said...

7:32 Not surprised, I didn't like Beloved. I understand it's a part of black history but I'm tired of seeing slave movies. Life still went on after slavery and their are many, many positive stories with struggle just as slavery movies with struggle. Oprah is only for projects that benefits her pocket and boost her name even more.

I wondered years ago why Sofia never opened a film studio and made films like Ray and Jackie Robinson and Malcolm x but she can't actually uplift the race ya know. She is the slave she often portrays.

How about if she canceled some of those weak ass Tyler Perry shows. $natch 3 of them joints for one decent show. Gosh!
