Another Scandal At Oprah's School

Seven girls have been expelled from Oprah's South African Leadership Academy for Girl's for sexual misconduct. A South African newspaper reported the girls allegedly tried to force pupils into relationships with one another and to touch each other intimately. This is the second incident of sexual misconduct at the school in two years. In 2007 a school matron was fired amid sexual and physical abuse allegations.

Lisa Halliday, senior vice president of communications for the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation in Chicago, said the girls had violated the school's code of conduct.

"We consider this to be a confidential school matter," she said. "Therefore, we will not confirm any personal information or disclose any details related to these expulsions."

This school has been nothing but a problem and a half for her. I know she had her reasons for not wanting to open one over here, but she really should have. She could have kept a better eye on things, and yes, this sort of thing happens in same sex schools in general all the time.

I suppose Oprah's never heard the old adage 'take care of home first', which is a shame in and of itself. Yes...it's her money but the bottom line is that there are just as many girls suffering here as well, who [for whatever reason(s)] are not living up to their full potential and would have benefited greatly from such an opportunity. What the Mighty O's motives TRULY were in choosing to put her millions to work over there is something only she knows, but I'm glad it blew up in her face.

It has nothing to do with being 'offended' and more to do with the fact that he/she lumped ALL girls into the same category. By simply adding the word 'some' to that response, the point would have been better taken [and I would have been inclined to agree], but as stated, what he/she said was extremely asinine. :)

Hollywood Blackout said...

This goes on at all girls school in the US, too. It's what happens when girls hit puberty and their hormones are out of control crazy and there are NO BOYS around to hump on, lol.

They also have little to no privacy so even something like masturbation is damn near impossible.

The only reason this is a *scandal* is because its Oprah's school.

All girls school are ripe with lesbian action, especially at the college level.

It's a shame because these parents are so obsessed with these young girls getting good grades and getting out of Africa and coming to the US. I hope they are given counseling and not beaten for this. They are just children.

Hollywood Blackout said...

Many of us rose from being counted out before the game even started...so I think you need to take a look in the mirror, what you may see is an insecure, unintelligent, dumb-ass!! Oprah can spend her money any way she wants, I'm not knocking that, but what I am knocking is not affording the same opportunity to young black women here in the U.S. who look up to and admire her. All of us are not baby mamas, hos, and hoochies. Check the facts...it's more black women out here making a way for themselves and their families when men have not stepped up to the plate!! 12:20, that's real talk. oprah gave some money to a struggling charter school here in atlanta. she donates money to HBCU's all over the place. just because she chose to open a school in africa doesn't mean she isn't taking care of home too. granted i think she's arrogant as hell too, but there's a lot of good that she does that she doesn't bother to brag about. we all know that most girls in africa don't have a snowball's chance in hell of learning to read, let alone actually going to school. i give oprah props for this and and i hope this scandal goes away so that the girls that are there for education can get one.

malika the m.i.l.f. said...

i should clarify that i don't agree that black american young females are the horrible desciption that you made, that's most american kids in general, not just young black females.

malika the m.i.l.f. said...

face it, american kids feel entitled to education. they don't realize that in africa and in certain areas in china parents have to pay for school and many kids can't go to school past 1st or 2nd grade. in families with many kids, the parent will send the child they feel is the smartest to school so that child will take care of them in their old age. the other kids just have to work in factories or on farms at a young age. oprah did a good thing. first folks want to complain that she doesn't help or care about black people, but then once she opens a school for black girls in africa, folks are talking out the side of their necks. unscrew yalls faces and pray for those kids.

and i LOVE the dress oprah is wearing here.

Hollywood Blackout: I respect what you're saying but let it be known that NOT ALL girls are ripe with lesbian action; whether it be college or private school. Don't belive the media hype. Just because it's the "in" thing to be bisexual, doesn't mean all girls are going that route. Some of us are 100% straight. Can you say that all boys are ripe with gay action in college or in private school? Didn't think so. Stereotyping poeple is not the business. I'll say again, don't believe the media hyoe.

Anonymous said...

I don't think the problem with the schools is the kids, it's the goverment. If you send your child to a school in the suburbs, they have books, nice colorful rooms, computer rooms. the library is unreal compared to the libraries in the poor areas. how is this the black kids fault? Then you have grown ass oprah, making her statement putting down black kids.
how is a child suppose to learn if he/she doesn't have the same opportunities. if you send your child to one of these schools far out, then your child will succeed, not because he's around all white kids, but because they target the areas the child need help in, they work with the weak ares until the child is caught up. It's not the kids fault.

Hollywood Blackout said...

@2:26

I said that at all girls residential schools this happens A LOT. I didn't say that all women were bisexual. WTF?? This is not at all about gay/straight - it is about hormones and urges and stimulation. These girls are young and in a very stressful, competitive academic environment. They are on lockdown most of the time. They have few chances to blow off steam and no boys around to socialize with - this results in pent up sexual aggression -especially in girls just hitting puberty.

Not to put my business out there but iH ad urges at 12 years old. It was strange and new to me but I had a mother who I could talk to about it. These girls have school staff who are also probably isolated and held to a strict standard. Most boys and girls start masturbating at around 11 0r 12 but like I said, these girls cannot do that and many probably think it is worse than touching each other.

This isn't about media hype at all. Yes, it is cool in some social circles to be bi-curious but for most people it is not something we are interested in. Most of these girls will grow up and be heterosexual. Some may be lesbians but they would have been anyway.

And just for the record - no one is 100% gay or straight - ever heard of the Kinsey scale? There is no such thing as 100% heterosexualism. You are either MAINLY attracted to men or MAINLY attracted to women.

Ok, ya'll need to leave Oprah alone. What she was saying is that MOST black Americans don't appreciate the educational opportunities that are available to them. There are so many black scholarship money out there, that are available to disadvantage black students, but they never take advantage of it. In fact, I've read several emails and reports about how these organizations are taking back their grant and scholarhsip programs because NOBODY IS APPLYING FOR THEM! Folks, this is fact! Now I'm sure there are plenty of black folks that do want to further their education, however, these folks are few and far between.

Oprah decided to open this school in Africa because, for one, they're not obsessed with materialistic things such as ipods, newest kicks(jordans, nike etc.,) and they have a genuine desire for knowledge. Some black folks just hate hearing the truth.

I am gonna resist the urge to call you retarded because you did make somewhat of a legitimate point about the lack funding in the inner city school districts. However, this post is about Oprah and her school in Africa, and my point still stands. As another poster mentioned, Oprah has donated to tons, maybe even thousands, of inner city schools and HBC's, those funds go towards books and better educational programs. This woman is basically doing the government's job, for some of the inner city schools. So, again I ask, why do you and so many other posters hate her so much? Oprah gives to so many less fortunate, whether they be Americans or Africans, to try to help them achieve something great, I just do not understand where the hate comes from.

Anonymous said...

no one hates oprah, people recognize the fact that oprah has done alot of things for black people. But, she is not god. she make stupid statements and she do stupid things just like everybody else. The question is why do some people get so defensive when you voice your opinion about oprah.

i just can't stand people constantly trying to put black kids down, somebody has to teach them. they are no different from white kids, they are just less advantaged.

Only1Nikki said...

Oprah comes across as someone who thinks she is better than rest of her race. Her statement about American children just proved it.

Her comment:

"I became so frustrated with visiting inner-city schools that I just stopped going. The sense that you need to learn just isn't there," she says. "If you ask the kids what they want or need, they will say an iPod or some sneakers. In South Africa, they don't ask for money or toys. They ask for uniforms so they can go to school."

African children are not continuously faced with the same images American children are faced with iced out necklaces, nice cars, houses and expensive sneakers.

African children seek the bare necessities because that is what they lack first and foremost. Does Apple even market to people who don't even have access to decent clothing or in some cases running water? I can't see Apple wasting money like that.

Her statement about American children was broad and irresponsible. Oprah has access to a wide range of viewers and fans who knows who she influenced with such a negative statement. What if all the volunteers in inner city schools just stopped going?

Anonymous said...

@ 4:33

"..putting black kids down.." it's funny you say that because judging by her actions, she's investing in their future. I am only getting defensive of Oprah because of what she's done for black kids. Look, we both want black kids to have a better future and better opportunities, all the donations that Oprah has made, wouldn't you agree that she's trying to achieve this?

@ 4:33

I'd have to say that Oprah's statement is accurate. The number of black kids that put education as a priority, is a minority in any inner city. This is a fact. Low test scores, which is not completely their fault due to lack of funding for the essentials needed to excel, but you can best believe that @ least half of these students have the latest fashion. It is what it is. You can't get mad at O for being honest about what she sees.

Anonymous said...

"African children are not continuously faced with the same images American children are faced with iced out necklaces, nice cars, houses and expensive sneakers.

______

And this is why Oprah decided to build a school in Africa. The children aren't bombarded with these images therefore they appreciate it more. Most black kids fail to appreciate the gift of a free education, which is why so many black scholarship and grants have been discontinued or taken away, the black kids aren't taking advantage of them.

You are entitled to your feelings, eventhough I don't agree with them. Oh and FYI, if you've ever visited any bookstore you'd see a section dedicated to Oprah's book club, and there you would see a whole range of authors that are black. However, since you've already stated that you don't watch her program, how would you know that? Hmmmm..

I only mentioned Bill Cosby because usually when a group of people hate one (Oprah or Bill) they hate the other as well. It's good to see that you @ least have respect for Bill.

Just because Oprah has a lot of money and huge fanbase, it doesn't make her God. To the best of my knowledge, Oprah has never claimed to be God, nor asked to be worshipped. In fact, the only thing I've heard her request, more specifically from black kids, is for them to be the best that they can, through education. It's all senseless hate in my opinion.

@ 5:01

Yes, American black kids are used to material things, but that's the problem. It's my opinion that most black kids associate value with a large price tag it. So because a good education is "free" they don't see the value in it. Or because success, through education, takes time and the benefits aren't seen right away (luxury vehicles, huge houses etc.,)it's not respected or they're too lazy to go thru the process.

Only1Nikki said...

Like another poster mentioned, the value of an education comes from HOME! The parents have to instill these values at home, and stop feeding into the materialistic items that are being bombarded in the media.

We can not play the blame game when it comes to our youth. Someone has to be held accountable, and if you're looking for the responsible party, you need only look in the mirror. It's not up to Oprah or Bill to fix every little problem that black Americans have.

There is not one good reason why these kids should not be in college. It's not lack of money, because there are scholarships and IV Leage colleges throwing money @ minorities. It's laziness. I think there is something more here that maybe we aren't paying attention to. The article says the girls tried to "force" other girls and touch other students intimately. What we really should be wondering is who "forced" them into sexual behavior in the past. Typically when children touch someone else by force no matter what sex, it's a red flag that the child has previously been molested. These girls should be counseled not ignored and kicked out of the institution. 1 in 3 women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime... I think its a good opportunity to promote awareness of that issue.

Who cares where she opens the school, people are people. I can't judge Oprah because she currently does a lot more community service work than I do...

i talk to kids all day. and i ask them their GPA and ACT. i talk to so many that have less than 2.0 GPA and 15-16 ACT. i know that when i was in school, those kind of grades would not fly. why are parents allowing this? these kids have a "don't care" type of attitude that is a direct reflection of their parents. if parents cared more about their kid's grades, they wouldn't be bringing that crap home.

parents would put theor kids in tutoring, sat day school, summer programs...something. it starts at home.

@6:12pm what most people fail to realize is most non-Black non-Hispanic minorities they see in prestigious and/or competitive universities are FOREIGNERs. I have been told many many times by admissions and financial aid officers at these schools that they recruit them because they are ineligible for most financial aid. They pay full tuition and they fulfill the diversity quota, so Michael from Watts gets pushed aside for Jai Kumar from Bombay or Jason Lee from Hong Kong.

Only1Nikki is right. Many, many public schools offer a woefully inadequate preparation for higher education. Those schools are just concerned with stanching the bleeding and getting those kids out the door. Whatever comes after graduation is someone else's problem.

@6:17 there ARE a lot of scholarships out there for Blacks and everybody however MOST of them are poorly advertised. It is very difficult to find all but the most well-known and well-established scholarships. That is part of the reason why they go unclaimed. Another part of the reason is those applications take WORK. Many kids are ill-prepared to write an essay on the spur of the moment and a lot of parents don't know how to help them. I guess this separates the wheat from the chaff, but a better army of guidance counselors would go a long way towards addressing a lot of these problems.

BTW even with scholarships, school is expensive. Most scholarships go towards tuition, maybe fees and room and board. Financial aid officers take away your federal aid in proportion to the outside scholarships you receive. It is up to the student to cover her meal plan, books, lab costs, etc. and if you don't get work study good luck landing a job that will let you work 2 hour shifts 2 or 3 times a day.

I'm not at all saying it's impossible because it is. You just have to be emotionally strong and mentally hungry to go for it.

@7:06pm I agree!

u know why teachers don't care as much? cuz they are overworked becuz schools keep consolidating, they don't get paid enuf to deal with these behaviorly challenged kids (i have seen them first hand), and they have to use their own money for their supplies. soto think that ppl that are not making enuf money are gonna care as much when these kids don't seem to wanna learn is silly.

when i ask kids why they have a 1.75 GPA, they say cuz i didn't care my 9th and 10th grade year. u can teach kids all u want, but if they don't care to ingest it, they will never get it.

i have a cousin and 2 friends that are teachers. i also have two good friends that work as subs. i have also worked as a sub and i work closely with high school kids now...so i am not making this shit up outta my ass. these kids don't care. it is my observation and others that can see it. maybe where u r the kids are great. but i have seen it ohio, cali (bay area), chicago, and the oklahoma (where i am from.) if i have seen it alla these different places, then something is wrong. until we admit that something is wrong, then it would be terribly hard to fix it.

those girls are at the age when they are ready to experiment. Since there are no boys around some are going to experiment with each other. If you do any research on boarding schools you will find that this is fairly common. It's sort of the same thing that happens in prison.

BTW, I do have a problem with those who are forcing others against their will.

Even if “they” stopped coming would that make little kids in the hood study more ….NO. Children fail largely because of their parents and environment.

they come here and open stores and shit a blk person cant even get a loan 4 a damn thing.
Actually they loan each other money and often have their own banks. Something that we used to do and have. If you have 30 associates, relatives and friends, all of you should be able to get together and raise 20k in 3 years to open a small store.

dont get it when someone says point the blame on the parent because of there lack of education, shit isnt that why we send them to school to get educated
Yes but the parent have to pick it up somewhere. The parent needs to make sure his/her child has completed their homework. The parent should also spend money for a tutor if they aren’t able to help their child with his/her homework. Less money on video games and more money on tutoring. BTW, google Korean wagon to get an idea of how serious some working & middle class parents take their children’s education.

when I was in school parents wasnt involved in our education because the teachers were doing there part.Parents only came when there child was acting a fool.
If not working then you had lazy parents. The children who do best in school come from a home in which the parents are most active.

but now we get these teachers that dont give a pluck
Not when the teacher is afraid you or your child is going to beat the breaks off of her.
.dont know half the shit there self.People can say what they want but our children lack of education is also lack of the education of the teachers.
A good point here. We need more math teachers. Kids in the hood need math and science. We are moving away from an industrial/manufacturing economy and into an information economy. Less Ford/Hanes more Google and Yahoo.

ONLYNIKKI SAID:

===================================
Thank you, baby. Look, nobody is sayin' Oprah is a bad person, but you coulnd't hypnotize me and tell me she's not a fuckin sellout. Her statement says so many things, but what blares the most to mah 3rd eye is she understands like a muthafucka what's goin on over here, yet she flew her ass across the planet to cut a ribbon over there. I understand where people like DFY come from because a lotta things Oprah does make me feel the same way - fuck that sellout. She's just like the rich couples across America that recognize the problems with an overabundance of orphans in this country... then fly way the fuck to Russia or Southeast Asia to adopt...fuck those sellouts too. Our TV's will show starvin kids in other countries all goddamn night, but won't shine a light on the tragedy goin' on her in our own nation.

And I feel like this... bitch don'tchu EVER speak at me about mah family when yo ass been livin' single with no husband/partner or kids. You can't tell me jack shit about mah family life or how to raise mines so take yo lil rat dogs n' get the fuck outta mah face. I went broke a fuckin joke to adopt mah lil man, but when I got him I struck it more rich than dat bitch will EVER be. I'm cool with tha lil book clubs and da surprise lotta giveaways, but dat shit means nothin' to the multitude of Black people dat she (in my opinion) isn't doin' nearly enough to reach. But like Nikki's quote implies...she probably gave up on dat idea a long time ago and took it to South Africa. She need to lead by example. Put them fuckin rat dogs down and go adopt a child or two from right there in Chicago and lead the single woman by example into the future. But nah, she's done her deeds, right? She has this powerful TV show that I couldn't name one nigga dat watches more than once in a blue moon, and she has her school on the otha side of the planet, where kids "appreciate" what she's doin, but then stood there at Obama's acceptance speech, cryin...you shoulda had a gang of students from The Oprah Winfrey Academy of Chicago ridin' witchu.

So who cares because Oprah Winfrey has NEVER been a leader in any African-American community dat I've heard of and she's nothin' I would tell my daughter to be like.

the schools are horrible in the black neighborhoods, you might find one or two that is just okay.
i don't care how smart a parent is,if your child is not in a good school, they will struggle. i think black parents should overflow the white schools with there children, so that they can get the same education as the white kids are. you might find out that your child is gifted just by putting them in a good learning environment. I look at the MCAS scores in the black neighborhood and it's insult to expect a parent to send there child there, I don't even know why the school is even open. oprah has no idea what is really going on with the black kids, if she did she would have never made that comment.

@ quesha: i couldn't agree with you more. the only reason i'm in college and about to graduate is because of my father. my mother (who had custody of me) didn't go to pta meetings, didn't check homework, didn't give a damn how i did in high school. once i decided to go to a community college she was STILL making snide comments about me needing to just get a job, forget school, and move out. now that i'm about to graduate from a major college in my state everyone is patting me on the back, but i remember how everyone was talking crazy about me. i talked to my son's father just yesterday about my desire to send my son to a private school, hopefully with other black students. i certainly don't think that ALL black parents are as lazy as my mother was, but enough of them are that the future generation is in trouble and we all know it. it sounds like we have concerned parents on this board which is what we need more of, but unfortunately we have schools full of children that are the result of laxidazical parenting. and once again, i'm not a fan of oprah, i don't even watch her show, but she seems to seriously support education and folks need to stop clowning her for doing good. there is no sense in talking bad about people that want to help their own community. folks are talking about her sending money to a school in africa, how about giving her props for giving money to all of these struggling HBCU's? what oprah said in that statement is what folks have been saying all along- american children feel like everything should be handed to them. folks need to stop getting so defensive and taking everything personally. not ALL children are self-serving, but enough of them are to know that something is wrong with them as a group.

malika the m.i.l.f. said...

@9:10, i think oprah understands what goes on the black schools (she's from rural mississippi for god's sake, she knows that they don't get the same money as white school) but like i just said, most parents really don't give a damn what their kids are up to. my mother and my sister are two examples that i've witnessed that treated the school like a babysitter. i still wonder how much i could done in life if my moms would have had my back on the educational tip and put a foot in my ass when i needed it.

The truth of the matter is that America is not a third world country. It really is the land of opportunities. I say this as the daughter of parents that came from third world countries. In third world countries you will get NO WHERE without an education. That means elementary secondary AND college and if you work hard then maybe just maybe you won't be that poor.

In America you can make a decent living with just a GED. That is how much opportunities there are. I have known people that could barely read that got sponsored to come to America. They didn't have a pot to piss in at home. When they come here they bust behind and in a few years have a nice home, car and business going.

The sad thing is that our black youth is constantly brain washed to believe that if they are not athletes rappers or some kind of star then working hard isn't worth it.

The bullshit about not having the same opportunities as better suburbs or white suburbs is bullshit. My parents had to pay to go to school, for everything books supplies lunch and uniform. In America all you have to do is show up. You could even get free lunch and breakfast.

All you need to truly learn is a good teacher books and the willingness.

Your statement is completely untrue. I know from experience.

I came from an inner city school black neighborhood. Would you believe I sat in the same desk my uncle had carved his name into some 20 years before. Not only that our book also had not been updated since he and my mother were there the books we had to learn from listed Jimmy Carter as the last president FYI I graduated from highschool in 1996.

My children go to schools that were given Exemplary Status Award(S) (More than one) in our predominantly white neighborhood each of the children are assigned computers text books are up for review to be updated every year. The district also hires retired teachers to tutor children if they are having a problem in a specific area.

Like I stated earlier immigrants get the same education (junior high/high school) as black people and they are still going to college and becoming successful. As long as individuals like 5:02 & 4:48 keep making excuses for why our communities are so fucked up, the more we cripple black kids. There are no excuses, and nothing that you say will change that. I'm not being ignorant or closed minded, it's just that I have seen too many kids that come from poor communities & school systems, but I have also seen these same kids go to school and become successful. I know if they can, then so can everyone else.

@ 4:48

And just to add to your comment...

I went to a public school and didn't learn shyt! I coasted thru junior and high school, but I still went to college. It was an eye opening experience, and I had to work twice as hard. But the point is, is that I didnt let the "lack of funding" or "poor educational system" prevent or keep me from going to college. It's all about values and priorities. Kids now a days, only value quick get rich schemes e.g. selling drugs, stripping etc., or becoming "famous". No one wants to work hard for something, when there are quicker ways to fame and money.

I'm not saying all kids, just a large percentage of them.

@ 6:28 You misunderstood my whole point I know kids from impoverished neighborhoods can make something of themselves I did it.
My point is that you can't compare children from Africa to children from America plain and simple. When the government wants to judge the educational system here in the US they don't compare themselves to Africa they aren't on our level they compare themselves to China. I also am not making excuses for the reason why some American children can't succeed....Like I said I did it. Let me ask you something why don't immigrants get an education in their own country?
Now try not to make an excuse.

What I am saying is like I said earlier
Suburban education and Rural Education are not equal
African children and American children can't be compared to one another (two different back grounds)
Also Oprah's comments were irresponsible it could have caused volunteers to simply give up.

FYI

I know allot of immigrants who work at Wal-mart. I also know allot of immigrants who drive cabs. I also know allot of immigrants who cut yards and live off our welfare system.
Not every one who travels here takes part in the American dream. Just like some of them fail so do some of American children.

It was lovely chopping it up with you guys, good night.

You proved me, and other posters that agree with Oprah, right with this one comment..

"Let me ask you something why don't immigrants get an education in their own country?"

As another poster mentioned, America is the land of opportunity where someone with a GED can become a millionaire. This country caters opportunities that other countries could only dream of. Which is why Oprah decided to open a school in Africa. She probably wanted to bring to Africa, what we take for granted in the US, which is the OPPORTUNITY for success through education.

Thank-you again, for proving my point.

Goodnite!;)

One more thing, I don't know what area of the US you live in because the only immigrants I see are doctors, lawyers, and engineers. In fact, at our local walmart I see black kids that work there..

Also, the immigrants that take advantage of our welfare system usually do so to help send their children to college. They'd hold down 5 jobs to make sure their kids get an education..excellent values

Immigrants work in all sorts of jobs. They even aspire to the rapping booty popping bling bling lifestyle--see Angel Lola Luv and Akon.

Not all immigrants are doctors, they are teachers, cashiers, stripper, etc. They do NOT have the same educational system. Some have better education, and some worse, depending on where they are from and what type of school they attended (convent, British-run and so on).

There is no doubt a A LOT of immigrants come here and have access to programs and non-profit organizations' assistance that your average American is denied. Immigrants are able to go on medicaid, receive foodstamps, WIC, and so on. They get interpreters, free care at the local clinic, homes built for them, free tutors, free clothing and school supplies...They get a leg up.

No doubt Americans, esp. Blacks need to work harder and reach higher, but the playing field is far from level. OnlyNikki hit it right on the head.

@Bee Gee, I am glad Oprah opened that school. Those girls needed the help. She should have opened a sister school right there in Chicago or in--gasp--Mississippi!!! Wouldn't that have been something. To invest in home turf. Oprah changed her target audience a long time ago and with it her tune, but I suppose she's entitled to spend her $$ as she wishes. So am I. i did not like her tone in her last line. Many suburban (white) soccer moms will parrot that statement.

Until you build your own fucking school, I'd suggest you shut up. Oprah may talk the talk, but she also walks "the walk".

I have read just about all the posts on this board and I share the sentiment of those who say that Oprah was out of pocket and spoke without thinking her statement out thoroughly. I feel that she was wrong for basing her decision to go abroad and help kids in Africa based on their answer to the question she asked kids. Kids are a product of their enviornment and their mentality on success and education is formed on what they see as successful. The people that they associate success with have clothes, shoes, cars jewels and the latest electronics. They have Jay-Z, Beyonee, Kanye, Missy, Lebron and so on and so forth, and those people have and flaunt the things that the expressed a desire to have. Americans equate material possesions with success, so its natural for an american kid to want these things, they are children, they dont know what is best for them, most children dont.

My question is this. why does oprah have to fel like she has to go and invest millions to give African girls educated when Africa has billonaires like Aliko Dangote and Patrice Mostepe. Maybe she should have met with them and influenced them to use some of their money to improve Africa's education system while she focused on doing the same for American kids. now she can do with he money what she pleases but I think that three times as many kids in the world with subpar education if she would have eccouraged them to do for kids in Africa while helping kids in America.

Yeah she built a school. If SHE'S not TEACHING in it its just another building she paid for with all her money.

and all those girls were not poor. my co-worker watched something and saw where some of the girls lived, my co-worker who is a nurse said one of the houses looked better than hers. i think we need to help own own first. we have enough under privileged kids here. also like someone said back in the day the teachers did their jobs and they held it down. parents showed up for the conference or if the kid acted a fool and he or she may have gotten their ass beat at school and child protective services was not called. now the teachers are in it for a check. so they can live nice and drive a nice car. it is no longer about the kids. we parents actually started to lose control over our kids in the 1980's when the SCHOOL SYSTEMS told the kids "if you see your parents doing anything wrong call C.P.S." they did not tell the kids that the call would actually send them to the foster care sytem to live with strangers. were i live they even told kids if mom or dad beats you no matter what you did call C.P.S. as we can see and have seen the kids that should have been taken away were not and the ones that were should have stayed with mom and dad. our education system is backwards. people always talking about god and the bible. well they don't do what the bible says. the bible says charity begins at home. not just in your house. africa is just the in thing for celebrities nowadays. i remember the crack baby adoption days. all that has played out. and so will this.

YA'LL CRAZY IF YOU THINK THAT SHIT DON'T HAPPEN HERE AT ALL GIRL SCHOOLS. THEY SOME FREAKS!!!

we know it happens here, oprah thinks it only happens here with the black kids.

@12:20 and Malika the highest form of charity is giving of your heart through your time and effort NOT giving of your money. Yeah, Oprah gave money (which is more than most people have done) but has she taught in the school, did she personally speak to the girls at the school? She could have done all that here and more. Money is wonderful, however I think people working in Americorp, Peace Corp, and Teach for America are more deserving of your praise. I'm not trying to knock Oprah for doing some good, but I'm not calling for sainthood either.

These kinds of problems are UNIVERSAL. It doesn't matter what country and what race. Oprah was trying to do something good, but unfortunately nobody is exempt from this.:(
