Mathew Knowles Tax Dispute

The state of California says Mathew owes money, Mathew says he doesn't...

From The Detroit News
Music executive Mathew Knowles, credited with building daughter Beyonce into an international superstar, before being replaced recently, owes the state of California more than $12,000 in delinquent taxes, according to public records.

The Texan disputes the tax bill, however, and said the state owes him money.

What's owed:
The state of California filed a $12,115 tax lien against Knowles on March 9 with the Los Angeles County Recorder of Deeds.

His side:
His accountant, Debra Whelan Johnson, was unaware of the tax lien until being contacted by The Detroit News.

She said the tax lien is a mistake, and that her client is owed a refund.

She determined the best way to correct the mistake was to have Knowles file a non-resident California tax return for the tax year in question.

"My firm has filed the return and Mr. Knowles will be receiving a tax refund," she wrote in an email. "This is not my point of view, but a fact. If you would like a redacted copy of the return to verify I am sure we can make that available."

Despite repeated follow-up requests, she never provided a redacted copy of the return.

Knowles issued the following statement: "I have overpaid my taxes in California and look forward to receiving my refund. If it had not been for you I wouldn't have known."
