Why You'll Never See Stephanie Mills on Unsung

TV One's UnSung is where all your old school favorites go to spill the tea on why they never quite made it as far as they should have.

Stephanie Mills says 'unsung' is a label that doesn't apply to her...

Stephanie Mills says UnSung's producers have been begging her to let them profile her but she keeps refusing telling Huffington Post,
"I don't like that show... They have approached me quite a few times, but I [won't] do that show... I've always been very private and at 55 I don't want to open up my life to that... They've done Angela Winbush and they even wanted me to say something about her on that show, and I love Angela, we're sisters. But I had to tell her, 'I don't want to do that.' ... I'm not that girl... I don't want to get on these shows and open my life up; I don't think it's anyone's business... Let me sing, let me do my concerts, let me do music."
"I don't feel unsung... I feel like I've had a wonderful career. I've done wonderful things and met some many wonderful different people. So I don't feel like I'm unsung at all... They even called my agent and tried to offer me some kind of tour if I did the show, and I was like, 'I can't do it'... It [goes against] everything that I believe in."

Supposedly she's MJ's first girlfriend.

Am I the only person who couldn't stand her voice?? Just wondering

See Beyonce this is how you keep your private life private. Forgive the Beyonce reference just had to do it.

Good for her! I wish more people felt this way.

Good for Stephanie Mills, er'body don't need to be in ur business!!

I love Stephanie Mills all day and I respect her decision.

I do want to know the tea on her though!

That's fine Steph, we'll get the tea after you die. There is always someone on your team who wants to be on TV.

And THIS is why I LOVE Stephanie Mills. THIS is a woman of class. She was always a smart, classy and well put together sista. I can understand where she's coming from too, eventho I love the show. I do think that perhaps TV One of someone else should do a show simply about artist of the past, as unsung implies that these artiest haven't reached mainstream appeal. Many of them hadn't but honest, many of them didn't care to cross over to a white audience (that what I consider mainstream).

If only artists of today were like THIS. And stayed their asses off Twitter. I miss the days when a celebrity had a lil mysteriousness about them. It made them more intriguing and also that little bit more appealing. Celebrities are too damn open now. And a majority of what they're revealing about themselves is a turn off. When did it stop being about an artists craft, ie their music, and become a circus?

I ♥ Stephanie "Something In The Way You Make Me Feel" Mills. And love her even more for being true to herself.

@1:01 sad but true. I respect her decision, and I'm glad she's not crying broke or drug addicted. Looks like she took control of fame.

@12:56 Beyonce don't put personal life out there like that though. Everything from her dating Jay to her pregnancy (which seem to last 10+ years let her haters tell it) was private. If the tea is spilled, she didn't put it out there.

Now lets talk about these other divas..

@12:54...every voice is not for everyone I guess. I actually like her voice but someone like Keisha Coles...I can't-it just sounds like she's screaming...I had a co worker that would change the station whenever Fantasia came on b/c she said it annoyed her too...lol

Anonymous said...

Good for her, but it doesn't have to be negative. Deneice Williams' was really good. She basically said that her career was and still is great and she is very grateful for every opportunity she was given.

But I understand her being a private person.

Anonymous said...

I think the other reason why she won't do the show is because I believe I read somewhere she was in an abusive relationship with the guy fron the group Shalimar-- not Howard Hewitt. Maybe she knows that topic will come up.

@1:02 Kids of today are truly deprived. They don't even know what REAL music is. Stephanie Mills is a gem. Listen to 'I Learn To Respect The Power Of Love' or 'Put A Little Rush On Me' #respect

She is in denial. She is definitely unsung.

Anonymous said...

@1:07 I remember that and I was so pissed for her. That skinny little fuck needed his ass kick for laying hands on her (and Jody Watley). He lucky he is in Timbucktwo Japan!

Anonymous said...

Stephanie's voice, Patty Labell's voice, Fantasia's voice all make my skin crawl. Stephanie Mills voice is far more tollerable though.

Anonymous said...

Michelle Williams voice makes me want to cry every time I hear it. I love her in Destiny's Child but she sounds like somebody's grandma...

I used to hate Teena Marie's voice..but I love her now...I even try to sing like her from time to time.

Anonymous said...

I wish other celebrities would take this route. I just feel that when celebrities put there business out there like that, it screams desperation.

Anonymous said...

Thats right Stephanie. Don't be exploited. Do life after

Anonymous said...

I'm sorry but I can't agree with her statement. Unsung does not give the real tea and a lot of the information they give is cookie cutter and not the real tea that you would read on lipstick alley or other blog sites. She doesn't have to do the show and that's her choice but ask her this who is checking for her? What album has she put out in the last few years or so that was not a greatest hit album? That's a part of being in show business

Anonymous said...

She didn't do it cause Unsung is a show for has beens. She is in denial and know it's over. Instead of her saying this she come up with some bullshit about how she's private WHATEVER!!

Anonymous said...

Stephanie has TOO much tea to spill on all your faves, that's the real reason why she ain't going on here. Who else in the industry can give you the goods on Diana Ross (remember The Wiz/Motown controversy), Teddy Pendergrass, Michael Jackson and a few sips of tea on Shalamar? Also she has many friends in the industry, who knows what else she can spill on...

TheBarberLady said...

@ 12:54. NO you are not. I'm glad she accomplished so much in her career but I just couldn't stand listening to her. I would say that back in the day and get side eye fever from all the crooked glances.

She has that Billy Goat thing...bad.

Patti LaBelle and Stephanie Mills were both on MCA in the 80s. Most of Stephanie's biggest hits were originally meant for Patti, but Patti said no to all of them. I'm sure Stephanie feels some kinda way about getting the leftovers.

Also the producer of Never Knew Love Like This Before, which was supposed to cross Stephanie over to the white crowd, went on to produce Madonna and y'all see what happened with that.

Let's also not forget how she was originally in line for The Wiz movie but Diana Ross got that instead.

Stephanie has had a lot of missed chances to make it to a Whitney/Donna/Diana level of fame and maybe that's why she's feeling salty about being called "unsung."

1:11 what are you talking about. That quote is the most used and uninformed quote every. In Junior high I was listening to NOTHING but Luther,Patti,J5,MJ,MOTOWN,70's all genres,60's and what not and so were alot of other kids at my school. We listened to "todays" music too. Especially in h.s., all kids listened to was ol skool hip hop,Bootsy,Hendrix and classical,MJ again, lol and R&B. When we had parties we listened to it all. Stop using that dumb ass quote. Just because your kids listen to just todays music doesn't mean we all do. Let people listen to what they like. Smashing Pumpkins,Cranberries and all that other labeled "white music" we didn't give a flunk. Now in college, you see kids who listen to just popular stuff and kids who to oldies and popular.

@1:30pm Maze have not put anything new out either but every show the have is a total sell out. With all the bull-shit out now, it's not hard for an old schooler to have a sell out concert. So to answer your question who is checking for her? I am for one.

@1:02 - P-R-E-A-C-H! I honestly wish a hacker would completely destroy Twitter and Facebook. The attention whoring from both celebs and non-celebs is *beyond* pathetic--it borders on a damn mental disorder!

Stephanie Mills may be "unsung", "washed up" to some, but for me, I'll gladly take her over every so-called "popular" or "top selling" artist that's out today. Her *worst* songs could wipe the floor the crap that's on the Hot 100 these days! I wish this Autotune mess would die already!

BRAVO!

Anonymous said...

Has anyone thought that STEPHANIE didnt want to be a big hit? Not everyone wants to sell their soul for a hit album, in which she already had major talent. You see she is not strung out, broke, in media, etc and you know why? Because she chose not to go that route, Diana was arrested for drunk driving and Berry Gordy controlled her...

Anonymous said...

Stephanie Mills ISN'T un-sung. She still does concerts and plays. Un-Sung is more about artists and acts that have just up and disappeared. I don't know why they even profiled Christopher Williams as he does plays now.

I also give her big ups for living her life to a STANDARD and living her life in a way that she ISN'T in the tabloids and rags every other week about drugs and bankruptcy. Just goes to show that you CAN have success on your own terms.

im checking for Stephanie too! I just bought a couple of her albums (literally albums)

Stephanie is not Unsung. SHe was a major hit back in the day. Most of the old school concerts get sold out. I love her voice. She doesn't screech like some people we know. Jeffrey Daniels from Shalamar never put his hands on Jody Watley, it was Howard Hewett that did that. Christopher Willaims act in plays and he tours with old school acts too.

I wanna know which venues Stephanie Mills is selling out and which festivals she's headlining, 'cause some of y'all are reaching. Selling out Madison Square Garden ain't the same as selling out the rec center on Madison Avenue. Being the lead act on Lollapalooza ain't the same as headlining a gay pride parade in Selma, Alabama.

Anonymous said...

She's right, she's not unsung. Tell 'em, Steph!

J.Swindell said...

Sorry but as much as I like that show, they are not consistent. For example, they have many veteran acts that are "unsung" that still make some performances today (i.e. Bootsy Collins), others who had the talent but got derailed by the system or drugs (DeBarge, Vesta, Phyllis Hyman), 1-2 hit wonders (Clarke Sisters, Sheila E.) and they asses just ran out of ideas (Whodini, Full Force).

But Ohio Players, Teena Marie(RIP), Donny Hathaway, Shalamar and many others have had more than a couple of hits and a few of those made the Top 40.

So I think it's just whoever (or person that chooses to represent them if deceased) that has a story to tell. There is a feature on Google where you can look up old issues of magazines and JET gives detail about what happened at the Jeffrey Daniels/Stephanie Mills wedding and you can tell that marriage was doomed from go.

I like the work that Ms. Mills has put out and think she definitely made her mark. I think she is missing the point. UnSung is a show to market your legacy, share something with your fans and other aspiring artist about the business and the hurdles you made to be were you are. She does not have to share certain details that are too personal but things that frames a time line of her career with success and periods that were not so successful and her input into the reasons. She is a talented diva that other singers admire. UnSung is a show that notarizes artist WHO MADE IT! Not artist who never or one hit wonders. All the artist that have been on UnSung have been bona fide talented acts who saw fame rise and decline something 95% of artist who make it have and will experience.

5:27 very well put! The show has had several artists that most of us would think went as far as they can go! As you stated it does help mark their legacy! It is not a slap in the face for an artist to appear on this show, or degrading! These are artist the public has backed for years and we would like to know more about them! its not like they are sitting in a barbara Walters interview where any question may pop up! She does not have to share her personal secrets with the world! I think there have been many artist that have been on the show that kept several secrets in the closet! Im fine with just knowing what they are doing now and if they plan to release new music!

Anonymous said...

3:05, u are rude as hail! But u right, and I got my chuckle, lol!

Anonymous said...

If she doesn't want to put her personal life out there then more power to her. I wouldn't question that aspect of her comments. What she's missing is Unsung is about talented artists who may be hugely popular in black society but never got their due outside of it or have been forgotten over time. She can't with a straight face say she's ever gone mainstream or that teens and 20 somethings of today know who she is.

It has nothing to do if whether or not she's still touring because the O'Jays have been touring constantly for decades. Artists showcased on Unsung have seen a resurgence and have probably also seen a jump in their record sales. If she's worried about being exposed then I understand that but if she thinks it's demeaning then she doesn't get the purpose of the program.

Anonymous said...

My guess is she doesn't want to be asked about the physical abuse she suffered at the hands of her husband, that guy from Shalemar.
I always liked Stephanie Mills.

Anonymous said...

@6:22

That's what I was thinking. I never saw "Unsung" to be a slap in the face of how irrelevant a singer was, or is (because let's be honest, every entertainer is going to have their time to shine; it can't last forever). I thought the show was about those few artists with extraordinary talent but never had mainstream or worldwide success (the was MJ or Whitney or Beatles). So far that's been ALL of them on the show.

I agree with Stephanie Mills' stance though. For those saying she doesn't have to reveal secrets if she doesn't want to, you might not know to what extent these Unsung producers will go through to pry something out of her no matter how much she resists and stands her ground. Not to mention her agreeing to the show will greenlight other employees/coworkers/producers/singers to give their side to what they know about Stephanie and she probably doesn't want that either. She's just playing it smart to NOT open Pandora's (gossip) box.

Anonymous said...

Actually the show is highlighting great artists and their careers. Every one who has appeared on the show comes off as a class act.

Anonymous said...

Stephanie's just pure class! For her its just about the music, she's not interested in being a 'celebrity' and good on her

Anonymous said...

^ Exactly. That same "celebrity" aspect is what put MJ and Nippy in early graves. Who says you have to be a celeb as well as a musician?

@6:30

I'm guessing that's her frame of reference as well. It was a big mess after the Shalamar episode because Jody Watley didn't like the way her relationship with Jeffrey was portrayed. She hadn't planned on focusing on the bf and gf part of their relationship as much. Jody even made a youtube vid discussing her complaints about the end result of their episode:

@1:07 - You're right. I heard Jeffrey Daniel used to beat on Stephanie. Jeffrey has been in other relationships with women, and has been known not to keep his hands to himself. If he has issues with woman like that, then it's obvious he doesn't like women. So, he could be gay. I always had a "feeling" that Jeffrey possibly swings that way. Anyhow, I will miss not being able to see Stephanie on, "Unsung". If she wants to remain private, I respect her decision to do so.

I love Stephanie Mills she was a major artist back in the day and she did "sell out concerts" during her peak as an artist. I went to see her in concert every time she was in Philly. Like most artists she hit her peak and then she fell off mainly because R&B music started to fade as Hip Hop began to take over. I wouldn't say she is unsung. She had personal issues with her marriages and family as we all do but that isn't any of our business. She was always a private person even in her hey day. But then again Most Old School Artist keep their personal life private as they should. These new artists need to take some notes from them and stay off of Twitter ranting it's very unprofessional and unappealing. I personally like Not knowing everything about an artist it keeps me intrigued. Many old school artist are making good money touring these days because people want to see artists that Can Sing and care about their craft. My teenage daughters love the old school music. I don't want see Stephanie on Unsung. Stephanie is a truly talented singer and performer without any gimmicks and you don't need a gimmick or props when you have talent. Thank you Ms Mills for keeping it real and letting them know you are NOT Unsung, stay true to who you are.

Anonymous said...

@5:45 Stephanie Mills is not in the same category as those artist you named she had more hits than all of them put together and Heather Headley for the most part is mainly a Broadway performer that made three CD's. Stephanie was only in the WIZ. Everybody from that ERA knows about the problems Stephanie had during her marriage to Jeffery Daniels not to mention he had been in a long term relationship with Jodey Watley shortly before he married Stephanie. on one hand the show could work in her favor but on the other hand it could open old wounds that she has moved on from. Also some things could come out from other people that the producers bring on the show from Stephanie's past that she might not want revealed. I'm sure their are many things that would be aired on the program that are out of her control and it may not be positive and I can see why she wants to avoid that.Other than the Jefferey Daniels mishap she has remained pretty much been scandal free so why mess with that. If she is on tour successfully and making that money she doesn't need Unsung.

Anonymous said...

I just watched Jody Watley's youtube discussion about her relationship with J Daniels. she talked about the abuse but she also talked about his marriage to Stephanie Mills and how hurtful it was and the tension it caused in her and J Daniels personal and professional relationship. You could tell she wasn't telling everything. I remember when Stephanie married Jeffrey and I was shocked and surprized because I always thought he would marry Jody. Also they got married so quickly after Jody and Jeffrey's break up I always think Stephanie was "dealing w/ Jeffrey while they were still together and could have been part of the reason for their break up Jody kept harping on that marriage. Maybe Stephanie doesn't want all that to come out because many people were there to see what really happened. Jody said she did get an opportunity to talk to Stephanie years later and they got a chance to heal old wounds. It seems that the very public relationship of Stephanie and Jeffrey caused even more hurt to Jody because as she said Stephanie was a Very Big R&B artist at the time of their marriage when it had always been Jeffrey and Jody. She also said most didn't know about the abuse between jody and jeffrey I must said I didn't know about the abuse I like many saw them as a "sweetheart couple". I wonder was he also abusive to Stephanie as well.

Why do some of you posters on this board think Stephanie Mills has to cut a new album and give sell out concerts to be considered relevent to you?

You don't see Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson still playing basketball, do you?

Sports fans respect their idols for what they were in their time and are not looking for them to suit up and play the game again. It's The same with Stephanie. Why do she have to make a new album? Have sell out concerts?

Stephanie did her thing when she was young, just like you're going to do your thing at your young age.

If Marvin Gaye was alive, I bet he won't look as sexy as he did back in the day and I bet he wouldn't have sell out concerts, but I know he will have a following of women, young and old.
