Stephanie Mills Is Not Here for Raunchy Brian McKnight or Naked Erykah Badu

Old school artist Stephanie Mills has a word of advice for Brian McKnight and his raunchy sex songs and Erykah Badu showing up naked more often than not in her videos...

Stephanine tells The Huffington Post,
“I just don’t think you have to go that far to get attention, and I think sometimes the older artists—because he [Brian McKnight] is older now—the older artists are so starved for attention that they’ll just about do anything,”
“I think it took away from all of the classiness and the great stuff that he has done before,”
“When Erykah Badu took off all her clothes, I was like, ‘It’s just so unnecessary to do that!’ I love Erykah Badu, but I think sometimes they want to do the shock value thing, but I don’t think it always works for Black artists the way that it works for White artists.”

@1:08 thats a weave. from the gelled down, course roots,to the barbie doll ends, you would have to be blind to not be able to tell thats a weave. 2 completely different textures.

Stephanie, girl, I love you but please have a seat. You want to comment on everybody else, but won't tell your own story to Unsung?

I see she got a nose job too.

^^ damn she did get a nose job. and has the nerve to talk about someone elses appearance. its always best to keep ur mouth shut when u know u have dirt in ur closet.

Speak on it Stephanie. Brian Mcknight shocked the hell out of me. His bitch rants on Twitter were even more surprising. He must be going through a mid-life crisis. Reading this interview reminds me of the Whitney interview where she says she didn't want to wear costumes. She wanted to sing about love. Her and Michael are from an era where clown costumes and singing a bunch of irrelevant shit wasn't it. Where is the love in music? All the things being sung about and promoted in songs today are a part of the reason why the world is the way it is today. There's no balance in music. Yes people sang about sex in the 80s and 90s, but they sang about love also. Artists sang about a range of different things. Worldly issues being one of them. With the state the world is in now where are the artists singing about and touching on those subjects? Everything is sex, sex, sex. Praising materialistic things. Being superficial. And having cars and bling. What about the other side of the spectrum?

Thank God I grew up in era, where artists didn't feel the need to wear stripper attire to perform on a stage. If you have the talent you don't need to be on stage performing half naked. Barry White, Whitney, Michael, etc were beyond talented, yet performed fully clothed in nice ensembles. There was a pic circulating the net of Beyonce performing spread eagle on stage in the faces of her fans, to a fans distaste. The look on the womans face was priceless as she turned her head to look/walk away.

Let me tell you something...Stephanie is a smart woman...if you listen to some of her interviews...she speak the TRUTH...

i agree with her.

and criticism is not necessarily a bad thing, when it's done right. is this our preferred philosophy: just be quiet, never comment, never criticize, and let everyone do whatever they want?

some of our celebrities are complimented too much and not criticized enough.

Anonymous said...

The truth is the truth, regardless of who's telling it.

Anonymous said...

yes, she did have plastic surgery on her nose; however, plastic surgery and nakedness/ explicit, raunchy content are two different things; I agree with her!!.

Anonymous said...

She's in the entertainment business. Looks are everything, so get off her plastic surgery--hair etc. It's all part of the industry and goes with the territory. In no way, does it mean she can't have an opinion. She has freedom of speech, just like Brian nasty mcknight & Butt naked badu have freedom of artistic expression...if you wanna call it that. I like what she said. good for her!

Got dat rite - black people ALWAYS trying to do what white folks do like this country isn't hella prejudice... Do you think that Shaniqua n dems could launch a whole empire off a sex tape of her sucking a dick....like Kim K did....

Anonymous said...

She was a wouldve, couldve, shouldve career-wise,most of her hits AREN'T played outside the "ol'skool" hour.

She originated "The Wiz" but Diana Ross played in the movie release with Michael.

Anonymous said...

I love Stephanie's music & I must say she looks damn good after all these years. I also agree with her comments BUT...I have to give her a super side eye because in this same interview she was asked who she wanted to work with & her response was LIL'WAYNE. WTF????????? He sure as hell isn't classy & calls women bitches & hos.

Anonymous said...

Why is she commenting on others careers like she's bullet proof. She's no Aretha, Tina, or a Diana Ross. Nobody from.this current generation knows who she is. She needs to worry about how she's going to.get her own attention.

Anonymous said...

Singers are artists and they have artistic tendencies; I didn't hear anyone degrading D'Angelo when he was naked in 'How Does It Feel' or Lisa Stansfield and her remake of Barry White's 'Never Gonna Give You Up'. You have to listen to the words for things that you can't see with the naked eye and yes the pun was intended. And hey, the videos are put out with the naked artists

Anonymous said...

this hypocrite cant comment about anyones appearance when her insecure ass butchered her own.

aMochaBabe said...

Say what you want.....Stephanie is right & her comments are on point.

Notice her compliments to both entertainers but she indeed gets real with her observation of their recent choices.

Brian strayed from respectful and Erykah strayed from....clothing!

Completely unnecessary especially in artists who actually HAVE talent.

Only1Nikki said...

She got that nose job before it was popular to do so. I am glad she did she looked like if she sneezed she was gone bust her chest plate.

cns said...

They asked her opinion and she gave her opinion. It's refreshing to see someone give and honest opinion without fear or kissing behind.

Anonymous said...

Stephanie didn't you have a song with DMX a while back? Oh, OK...

Anonymous said...

2:03 Her publishing checks and royalties from music and broadway plays keep her from being attention starved. I pity any generation that doesnt know her music because its great and Great music is timeless. huffington post asked her opinion and she gave it. The artist she spoke on have REAL talent and don't need to resort to shock value tactics. Larry Fishburne"s daughter is a perfect example that blacks need to have several seats trying to pull those white stunts. She was made a bumpy booty joke while Kim k is worth 89Million.

Anonymous said...

2:41 Ummm What's wrong with recording with DMX?

Anonymous said...

Tell the truth and shame the devil
We need more Black folk speaking truth over these souled out celebrity exploits

Anonymous said...

I agree with her fully..... Yes, she had plastic surgery; however, a nose job and nudity/raunchiness are two different things.

Anonymous said...

2:42 royalties from WHAT? people have to play your music and buy it to get royalties. i doubt shes getting more than a couple hundred per year and u cant survive off of that.

Anonymous said...

and as far as the Diana Ross reference, yes, Diana is a LEGEND; however, vocally, Stephanie Mills has her... im sorry.

Only1Nikki said...

@ 3:01 I totally agree.

Anonymous said...

Who? Sit that one hit wonder ass down.

Anonymous said...

Ppl can throw dirt on Ms Mills all they want but she's a talented sista and she makes a great point...when ppl reference her, yeah, they may talk about her marriage with dude from Shalamar, or her with Michael but for the most part...you hear about the little woman with the big voice...she did her thing back in the day. Give respect...there are too many yes men in the world...I don't give a fuck what her titties look like, did she make a good point??? yeah exactly...

Anonymous said...

Something in the way you make me feel, I feel good, home. When I was younger I grew up watching BET and MTV videos and I'm 35 that may be old to some on here but home girl used to have some jams and can sang. Gone Steff, and the last I checked this country has freedom of speech,so let's agree to disagree everyone has an opinion and should be able to voice it without being called out about it.

Anonymous said...

@3:11...No, you sit down. You must be young to ask 'who'...you sound real silly right now. Stephanie is REAL black talent. Now if I hear another person say "she ain't no Whitney", I'm flip!..Ste[hanie was from an era of black music where the artist had no desire to cross over. "Feel the Fire", "Two Hearts", "Rush on Me", "Home"...and the list goes on. Stop playin...please. You may not like her opinion but to say "who" makes you looks extra disconnected..

dreadee said...

She spoke the truth, but I don't think either of them give a shit.

Lisa Stansfield was not fully unclothed in the "Never gonna give u up" video...sorry, Im a stan for Lisa...she was in a tub with water all over the place but she wasn't naked...try again..

Anonymous said...

3:18 stfu. im not that person but YOU sound silly. you expect everyone to know everyone else?

Now have you heard of mac zoe? If you havent, then youre silly and beyond ignorant.

and oh...she aint no whitney!

She chopped half her nose off

I like Lisa Stansfield too. Been around the world and I-I-I, I can't find my baby.

3:36 U sound idiotic. Stephanie Mills is loved in Cali. if you don't know her music maybe your don't live in cali. Just because you do not know someone's music or her fans doesn't mean she wasn't a star. She was a star on Broadway and I know at least one album went gold so she's not a one hit wonder just because your radio station at the time did not play her music. I don't know if you heard of the first amendment but in AMERICA people are allowed to have opinions

Anonymous said...

4:16

And I quote...

You must be young to ask 'who'...you sound real silly right now

I dont give a fuck where shes loved, who knows her, blah blah blah. to say someone else is silly because they've never heard of another person is IGNORANT. You are beyond foolish.

Anonymous said...

Anyone who doesn't know who this woman is a idiot!!! Then again you niggers are use to people with no talent being on the radio!! Black people stay looking stupid!!!

Anonymous said...

^That's the best you have, to justify your idiocy? Yawn. You're just further substantiating my claims of your obtuseness.

Only1Nikki said...

@ 3:11 I don't think anyone has a problem with you not knowing. It's the fact that you didn't know then tried to act like you did by calling her a one hit wonder. When all else fails Google is your friend.

Anonymous said...

@5:03 If you read my first post directed to 4:47(or you) I relayed that I am not that person @ 3:11, but feel its ridiculous to call someone silly because they havent heard of a person.

Spewing vitrol in the midst of a nonsensical at someone because they havent heard of your favorite artist is a far worse "offense" than failing to google.

Only1Nikki said...

@ 5:11 I agree hence the reason I didn't co-sign the previous comments. I often say "WHO?" in a post and people have no problem freeing me of my ignorance on the subject, I believe it is because I don't bash what I have no knowledge of.

Anonymous said...

"I think sometimes they want to do the shock value thing, but I don’t think it always works for Black artists the way that it works for White artists.”

++++++++++++++++++++

THANK YOU!!! Regardless of what surgery she has, who she's worked with, whether or not she's "unknown"/"hasbeen"/whatever, Stephanie told THE TRUTH!

Anonymous said...

To say that Stephanie Mills is a one hit wonder is like sayin that the sky is not blue! LMAO....she is FAR from a one hit wonder....The woman has many hits under belt as well as hit albums..Please do your research! Vocally, she is so underrated that it is sickening. She, in my opinion, is one of the best R&b female singers ever to have done it....Angela Winbush is another who fits this description. Again, I agree fully with Stephanie's opinion.

Anonymous said...

"never knew love like this before", " whatcha gonna do with my lovin", "put your body in it", "sweet sensation", "two hearts" (duet with teddy pendergrass, "last night", "the medicine song", "I feel good all over", "the comfort of a man", "youre putting a rush on me", "never knew love like this before"......Some of THE MANY HITS of Stephanie Mills through the years, dating back to 1979. Ok, I am tired of typing. LOL.

can you believe, people need to be reminded of that? the first amendment is so important; in fact, i think everybody should read the bill of rights at least once.

STFU, self cosigner. ^^ Dumbass who dont know the law.

As long as your rights arent offending OTHERS rights, theyre legal. how you gonna say something ignorant, then when called out on it by someone who is practicing THEIR right, claim first amendment? lol!

Stephanie told the truth! Erykah is a damn joke trying to present her old @ss self as a Black empowered women when she is really 3 baby daddy deep and ridiculous! Brian done got old and is pitiful talking filthy as a senior citizen! Stephanie is right Black folks used to be classy. What has happened to the CLASS? I did not want to see Erykahs stanking old @ss naked.

trivia time... Micheal Jackson was so wowed by Stephanie Mills performance in the broadway version of the wizard of Oz he famously watched it 6 times. She is a tremendous talent. c;assic RB at its best... old school compiliation staples. and at 55yrs old she looks good.

Anonymous said...

When one has true talent there is no need for the other things some artists have made a successful career of doing. That said Stephanie Mills is an R&B legend. Enuff said!!!

Anonymous said...

My issue is, Stephanie Mills has a lot of skeletons in her own closet worth talking about. She is basing her rant off of one mistake Brian McKnight made, What about all her past woes that you guys "her supporters" are conveniently leaving out of this thread. Let me name a few things for you guys. Remember Stephanie filed a lawsuit against her business manager? And she lost that case i might add. What about all the people she verbally and physically attacked throughout her career? She was sued once and had to pay up. You guys already know about her divorces, She can't keep a man or a friend. There is way more dirt to Stephanie Mills than what's being told in this thread. All you guys that are bragging about her hit songs, Why don't you guys tell more dirt on her because i know it all TRY ME.

Anonymous said...

@1:16 AM What does her past have to do with her comment? It's not like she put these artist down. Her point was that they didn't have to do what they did to rejuvenate their careers.

I think she was trying to send out a message to black artists to stop clowning for white folks and get back to black dignity and black pride.

Since you made the challenge I'll take you on. What dirt do you have on Stephanie that has anything to do with her comment?

I dont understand ppl not being able to give their opinion. I dont think that if you have a great voice you dont have to get naked or make up crude and nasty songs.whitney was on crack but she never got naked. We havecdione warrick, dianna ross, aretha franklin and the list goes onthese womenvnever get naked.

Stop hating on Stephenie! She has more hits than a lot of new artist! But it takes a lot of no music as knowing idiots to discredit her! Air is all that comes out your stupid ass mouths!Stephanie is one of the greatest even Micheal Jackson dealt with her! And if you don't know her then you beginners and behind on music! Stop hating on this legend because you can't stop her and she has done more things than any one of you so stay! She is a legend!
