Essence Atkins Tries to Come for Tyler Perry

In a candid interview Essence Atkins says Tyler Perry's little experiment of casting Kim Kardashian in Temptation failed...

Essence tells Sister 2 Sister
"I found it interesting that Tyler did that with Temptation, hiring Kim Kardashian because she has 16 million Twitter followers, which would seem like a brilliant marketing plan."
"He has one of the biggest Twitter personalities out there in his movies, and he had one of the worst box office weekends."
"It’s not a failure, but it did worse than his movies usually do just based on him.  I thought that was an interesting finding. Your experiment didn’t work."
"People want to see good stories. It’s not necessarily that they want to see Kim Kardashian in a movie. They want to see her in a bikini. They want to see her with Kanye. They want to see her on her show talking about her life with her sisters, but that doesn’t mean that they want to see her in a movie.”
Temptation pulled in over $22 million in its debut weekend, making it Tyler Perry's second highest box office gross for a movie not starring Madea. Why Did I Get Married Too is no. 1 in that catagory with a $30 million opening weekend take.

Madea Goes to Jail raked in $41 million in its opening weekend becoming Tyler Perry's largest opening weekend to date.

ESSENCE please have a few seats, a couch and a futon. Temptation came in 3rd that weekend and was a good opening. Why you hatin' on Kim? You can't act either. I'm just sayin'.

Sincerely,
A black movie supporter and Fan.

What is the big deal..she wasn't the lead actress. Why are people using Kim as an excuse..hell she is no worse than some of the others. Now Essence please name a movie that you were the lead actress or supportive actress and it was Oscar worthy..#crickets!!!

Always thought she was hot... but that forehead (damn!).

Ummm Essence STFU and exit stage left!

Ugh I swear "hatin" is the most overused word in the English language ..I don't agree either but she's not "hatin" on that cum bucket Kim ..simply stating her opinion YEESH

I've always hated the way her jaw moved when she talked it moves like she got mouth full of peanut butter

She is definitely right! Finally someone with balls to speak the truth!

Failed how??? TP raked in a mountain of money while filming on a shoestring budget(as usual) and Kim K. was great. She portrayed a shallow, narcissistic, walking, talking, blow-up doll...the role she was BORN to play and she did it flawlessly. Go somewhere and audition for another straight to DVD flop or soon to be cancelled BET series Essence!

pUHLEASE! What truth is this bish speaking? Sounds like she's a tad bit salty and jealous SHE DIDN'T GET KIM'S ROLE.

Sorry folks but sounds like Miz Magazine Title For A First Name is a 'lil upset. What's it all about? Hmmmmm... Anyway, why is she keeping track of Tyler Perry's money like that? And so what if his Temptation movie ONLY made $22 million dollars during its debut weekend. When's the last time Essence Atkins was in a film that grossed $22 thousand dollars during its debut weekend??? Stfu Essence. (That is an awful name.)

Wonder what's really behind the shade she throwing. Every black d- list actor that wants a gig does a Tyler Perry movie. Guess she thought Tyler would be beating down her door.

Tyler Perry is doing good numbers for Tyler Perry. What Essence is saying is that he should've been doing bigger numbers against, say, Steven Spielberg or an equally established director.

Putting your movie out on a slow weekend in the beginning of the year and yeah you will do some decent numbers cause it ain't shit else in the theaters. But if Temptation opened against the next Mission Impossible, Transformers or Batman movie? Yeah, OK.

Let's not forget the movie itself got the WORST reviews of all time and of course Tyler made the biggest mistake on having a rape storyline because now white movie critics are calling him out on his bullshit for the first time ever.

ALL OF YOU NEED TO DO EXACTLY WHAT YOU TOLD HER TO DO BECAUSE IF SHE'S NOT ENTITLED TO HER OPINION OR HER OPINION DOESN'T COUNT THEN NEITHER DOES ANY OF YOURS. I'M JUST SAYIN'

Kim K stunk up the movie and you know it. Pretty sure some folks did not turn out because she was in it. When did she take acting lessons again?

Anonymous said...

I'm sorry, how did "Haunted House" do? I strongly suggest she worry about her own flops, just saying...

Every experiment involves risk. They don't work 100% of the time. I admire risk takers.

Dear Essence,
Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one & right now you're showing yours. You mad Tyler Perry didn't have a role for you? You mad that you allowed yourself to get type cast and therefore aren't considered for more parts? Running off at the mouth about Tyler Perry & anybody else that doesn't pick you isn't going to help that. Your time would be better spent taking acting lessons.

She has the right to an opinion - BUT her facts are off. Madea is the cash cow and most of these other movies are done at bare minimum so any profits keep him afloat. In comparison to some of his other films, this was no where near a failure. And I believe someone above mentioned the question - Essence where is your $22 million gross. Mind you she was not the lead actress so why is Kim even a thought for blame??? Maybe she should be rethink her blame.

did Essence help "fund" it? Negroes always wanna hate when they don't even put in..

I don't support the ghetto movies Tyler Perry put out. I decided the Temptation was also a ghetto movie that I would pass on...I heard it was a good storyline...but majority of his movies are PURE JUNK. I won't even watch this on cable, losing 2 hours of my life for that crap. NO THANK YOU!

Tyler Perry, proud of his drive and that's all I'm proud of his body of work isn't nothing but a minstreal shows

I think it probably pisses off legitimate actresses like Essence, who work hard at their craft, and have experience get passed over for non-acting fame whores like K. And then to add insult to injury, black film makers pass over black actress to cast instead a white or latin, yet they expect to still recieve the support of black America at the box office. They won't get it.

Anonymous said...

The reason why his movie didn't do that well is because of how STUPID it was. Even some of the hardcore Tyler Perry fans have admitted it wasn't one of his best films. It had nothing to do with Kim K. Her role wasn't even that big.

Anonymous said...

When TP told us that KK was going to play a part in the movie and we told him how we felt having that DICK SUCKING WHORE in his movie. and TP went with her anyway that's why TP fan's did not go and see the movie he could have made more money if he would had listened to the fan's ijs.movin on

Anonymous said...

I agree with Essence. They are many Black and Latina actress and even White actresses that are struggling to get work. It was poor casting and it didn't help drive his movie sales. His fan base are not Kim fans and Kim fans are not running out to see a Tyler Perry movie.

I Talk Reckless On the Internet said...

I agree but talking about it in recorded media is a hell no. Hollywood is too small for that.

Anonymous said...

I loved the movie. Kim Kardashian was funny and the movie was really interesting. I think Essance is kinda green becuase she didnt get a "temptation" paycheck.

typical bitter black woman syndrome

Anonymous said...

What she said was the truth, hell Hollywood is not knocking on her door so there wont be a backlash. I stopped or never had supported the coon TP. He lost a lot of his fan base(black women) when he started talking shit about KimK. Hit him in his pockets and stay away from all his movies and maybe he will go far far away with his Shrek Gay Azz.

You can bet your next paycheck, d-list actress Essence Atkins won't get cast in any Tyler Perry movies. Essence better hope TV-One keeps airing Half & Half re-runs, or she might have to sign up for an EBT card.

Actually Haunted House did well. Opened with a $40 million box office on a $2.5 million budget, and there's already a sequel in the works.

Get ready for him to start making the white movies now...lol.

Anonymous said...

So Essence didn't get the part lol I always found her corny.

Anonymous said...

all Tyler Perry had to do was cast a white woman with real hair for Essence to lose it. lmao. Essence needs to focus on her lost edges. TP is no Shakespeare so why get mad at Kim.

Anonymous said...

I liked Half & Half and though I think Rachel True was the better actor, she has a point. While KK's role was not big or substantial, a c-lister like Essence or Shar Jackson may have appreciated the opportunity.

But those are the breaks

So she can either up her game at the Strassberg Institute and see if Spike Lee has an opening or stick with Wayans and that wack Ice cube show.

People always talk about how TP has made a ton of money with his movies but that's not exactly true. TP has released 13 movies and they collectively have made about 500 million in the US at the box office, averaging a little over $40 mil each. Even though TP may only spend between 15-20 mil apeice to make the movies, after factoring advertising and other costs, TP's films aren't exactly blockbusters. But I guess if Lionsgate can profit 5 or 10 mil from a TP movie then they'll keep chucking them out.

And the films have basically reaped $0 from the international box office. There was an attempt once to release one previous TP film in overseas markets but it failed miserably. Other countries simply aren't interested with the cornball rubbish that TP puts out.

I applaud Essence for speaking out. She only said what most actors of color in Hollywood are thinking. TP has always been a gimmick and stunt queen and until we stop supporting this bozo he'll keep putting out amatuerish, crude and lackluster fare!

Why people being negative towards the TRUTH Essence spoke is just plain old fashion HATING, bitter negative people stay looking for any opportunity to spread their hate.
What Essence said isn't even new and it damn sure is the truth.
Just because you like seeing Shaq look big and goofy on the basketball court doesn't mean you want to see that muthaf*cker looking big and goofy in a movie, on a tv show, on a fitness show for fat kids, doesn't mean if he has a large twitter following that his sneakers are going to sale big bucks at payless?

I have no problem with Kim, I've even defended her for being more than a groupie, she does WORK, she does do sh*t to make her own money, but her in her own show is one thing, her on HGTV Design Star is a problem and I purposely skipped that episode, when she was on the Apprentice (the season before I discovered Trump was a scumbag) I skipped that episode, and when she was on Top Model, that sealed the deal that I would never watch Top Model again. Kim doing her show and her slutty sh*t is fine, but please don't bring her into legitimate hollywood work, she didn't earn that and doesn't deserve that extension into real projects, it's offensive to the audience and the real talents. There!

Everybody has a lane and they need to stay in it. Speak Essence.

Essence has been mah girl since Smart Guy so I have a soft spot for her. And she's right. Sure Kum Kardashian's role in the Temptation movie wasn't all that significant, but Terry Perry knew what he was doing but letting it be known that she would be featured in one of his works and just letting that ball roll where it may. It got negroes on all sides talking and debating whether they should support the film or not. And according to the stats his indirect attempt at inciting engagement around his up and coming production failed.

Maybe Tyler should just focus on having QUALITY actors, regardless of color, and not trying to be slick and slip in some underbridge troglodyte to drum up interest.

Anonymous said...

Guess she wanted the part. The part was not very significant and actually was typecast for Kim's real personality. And if she believe it was about Kim's twitter followers she really does not understand the business. This was about trying to cross-over and cashing in on the real Kardashian brand. Kris is a serious businesswoman, and Tyler is a sharp business man.

Anonymous said...

Can this woman have an opinion about this closeted bottom boy and this overexposed Kardashian cunt whore without being accused of "hating"? I swear, I HATE celebrity defenders that feel everyone should kiss a celeb's ass all because they are A-list or have a lot of money. Fuck that shit! You bunch of chickenhead crack babies!

@5:16pm this 5 cent hater trying to act like $500 million dollars in profit isn't a big deal. Just Dumb.

Someone needs to ask Essence what happen to her career????
Why is she in bullshit like "Mr. Box Office" ????

Bee Gee said...

As if there weren't already enough reasons to avoid paying 10 bills for a Tyler Perry production.

Some people don't mind him casting an untalented famous for nothin' attention whore in a spot that could've gone to a creditable ACTRESS of whatever skin color... some people do mind. I'ont knock Essence for stating her opinion as an actress that felt insulted by what she saw as a bad casting to serve an ulterior motive.

Tyler Perry has carved out his niche in Hollywood and has done a good job whether I think he's a house nigga capitalizing on the buffoonery that is Madea or not. And as was mentioned earlier on the post, he obviously is trying to tap into different waters with this Kim Kardashian shit.

Cool, but just like Samuel L. Jackson voiced his disdain with rappers of no acting experience taking roles away from qualified thespians, Essence is within her right as a proud actress to voice her discomfort with what she saw as a horrible casting.

This is what hollywood movie-makers do though. How many rappers have been featured on movie trailers so that racist hollywood could pimp a whack movie to urban culture? Uncle Tyler simply cast Kris Jenner's daughter in an attempt to the drone culture that waste their lives devoting themselves as fans of famous for nothing celebrities.

As long as I can keep my 10 bones and say "Fuck Tyler Perry" and "Fuck a Kim Kardashian", I'm cool..

There she (KIM) goes again! Transparent woman living in a black mans world trickin and making her coins off of you Knee-grows...I swear, some you will eat 10 yards of her shit and beg for more! SMH! "Team Essence"

Anonymous said...

Essence can say whatever the hell she wants. She shouldn't have to censor herself just because it's kim kardashian.

Let blacks keep defending kim something she wouldn't do for any of you and she damn sure ain't gonna attack her own people over a black person. Black people are the only people that do that shit DAMN SHAME. If blacks hate her out of bitterness and jealousy - then what's white people's reason for hating and wishing death on kim and her family? I can't stand hypocrites.

Anonymous said...

His movies all suck. Save your money bcuz Temptation sucks major ass too.

Anonymous said...

She's right. Putting Kim in the movie didn't even help his box office sales like he thought it would. People get on my nerves always regarding off unfavorable opinions as hate. Kim Kardashian was not needed in this movie. Tyler Perry admitted he only casted Kim because she has a lot of young fans who might go see the movie. It definitely wasn't because of her acting skills. My annoyance with him isn't necessarily that he didn't hire a black actress, but that he didn't hire a real actress period for Kim's role. Sure the role Kim had wasn't amazing or challenging, but that could have been resume material and work experience for a real actress. Real actresses have it hard. Kim has dozens of reality shows in her corner whether she films another movie or not.

Anonymous said...

I didn't see it because I was not supporting kim. Her image is pushed on black women too much already.
