Jay Z Releases Statement on the Barneys Incident

After catching heat for remaining mum Jay Z releases an official statement regarding the status of his collaboration with Barneys...

This collaboration lives in a place of giving and is about the Foundation. I am not making a dime from this collection; I do not stand to make millions, as falsely reported. I need to make that fact crystal clear. The Shawn Carter Foundation is the beneficiary and the foundation is receiving 25% of all sales from the collaboration, 10% of all sales generated in the store on November 20th and an additional donation from Barneys. This money is going to help individuals facing socio-economic hardships to help further their education at institutions of higher learning. My idea was born out of creativity and charity… not profit.
I move and speak based on facts and not emotion. I haven’t made any comments because I am waiting on facts and the outcome of a meeting between community leaders and Barneys. Why am I being demonized, denounced and thrown on the cover of a newspaper for not speaking immediately? The negligent, erroneous reports and attacks on my character, intentions, and the spirit of this collaboration have forced me into a statement I didn’t want to make without the full facts. Making a decision prematurely to pull out of this project, wouldn’t hurt Barneys or Shawn Carter, but all the people that stand a chance at higher education. I have been working with my team ever since the situation was brought to my attention to get to the bottom of these incidents and at the same time find a solution that doesn’t harm all those that stand to benefit from this collaboration.
I am against discrimination of any kind, but if I make snap judgements, no matter who it’s towards, aren’t I committing the same sin as someone who profiles? I am no stranger to being profiled and I truly empathize with anyone that has been put in that position. Hopefully this brings forth a dialogue to effect real change. – Shawn “JAY Z” Carter

Nicely written by his PR team. Anyway, Jay Z only donated $6000 to his own so-called charity a few years ago!

Anonymous said...

All these foundations and charities do is make more money for the CEO's everybody knows about these tax havens, so he's only lying to himself. Anyone can "give", to a charity/foundation but never put their money where their mouth is. Therefore, I'm not impressed!

How convenient, it all goes right back to Jay-Z!

we findin out Jay Z a fraud more and more every day

Anonymous said...

He didn't release a statement because he gives a damn, because he doesn't. He probably didn't even release it for the sake of his own business because he's just worried about pleasing white people. Maybe his PR team said lets release some bullsh*t just in case Beyonce or the Obama's need black people on their side for something, we don't want this incident to maybe get in the way since you all are a team of super 4, so throw some BS together to keep black business calm in case they need it, because we know you don't give a damn about it and beyonce use to not care but now she needs everybody she can get because the gays alone ain't doing it.

Anonymous said...

How many more 'facts', does he need. He's just buying time. It's obvious money means everything to him. Profiling anyone black, white rich or poor is flat out ridiculous. Wealthy people who don't appear wealthy are treated the same way. I've worked in retail many years and have personally watched white employees size up another white customer and treated them completely different simply due to the way they looked. This was at Saks 5th Ave.

Anonymous said...

Jay Z is not lying to himself, he's lying to his stupid fans and stans, the white-guilt-ridden yuppies and the ass-kissing liberal negroes.

It is known that less than 10% of ANY money donated to a "charity" actually goes to its cause, because at least 80%-85% goes to the corporations who are hosting these said "charities".

So "Cray-Z" needs to GTFO with that first paragraph of his statement, because when it comes to business and corporations, it is ALWAYS about profit, " creativity and charity" be damned.

This is one of the pitfalls of the entertainment industry. These artist eventually become exactly what they thought they could control, but now they fully understand the term" money talks", and become addicted to it. This is why they eventually become recluses or loose their minds. The love of money is beast!

Black people crack me up. Where are the crowds for black on black crime in the ghettos?? Speaking up and in an uproar of babies having babies?? So what Jay is dealing with Barney...who gives a damn? Only the people mad because this hood rat keeps filling his pockets. Just like a pimp!!!

This eloquently written "statement" by his PR team is laughable! Does he really think people are buying his charity scam? 25% goes to his charity/foundation? Really?!!!! And another 10% plus another check from Barney's? Why not just write Jay one check instead of using his so- called foundation as a front. But I guess that wouldn't look humble. Please!

Has anyone ever seen or heard of any recipients of Jay-Z's foundation?

You coons are done, finished, demolished. You are incoherent and dysfunctional. You are mad at Jay-Z but not Barney's. Your fake outrage is why your community will forever be swindled, hoodwinked, bamboozled, and embarrassing. Where is your fake outrage for the fact that your women spend a billion dollars on hair weaves, but have no financial prosperity in the Black hair/Black hair care market? Where is your fake outrage on the fact that your men are targeted for prison? Where is the fake outrage on the fact that your schools need adequate textbooks and supplies? Where is your fake outrage on the fact that you are owed reparations but have yet to receive them? The bottom line is you dummies are mad at Jay-Z because he's Black, rich, and powerful. You all will never be two of those things, yet because Jay-Z shares a racial identity with you, you feel as though he owes you. It's in the nature of your people to hate on each other so these comments aren't surprising.

You're just another Jay stan typing a long-winded screed deflecting from the fact that he is a hypocrite and a greedy tool of the white corporate world.

Black people are mad at Jay because he expects to be able to profit from a store that allows its staff to discriminate against black paying customers without anyone putting him on blast for it.

Just like that other coon, Kanye, they think we are dumb enough to go along with their so-called deep and edgy music and marketing ideas.

I wouldn't be surprised if Kanye started selling klan robes and hoods as "urban gear" next. Jay is probably a silent partner of his already, selling those confederate flag bags and shirts.

We should have known they wouldn't stop at that Niggaz in Paris bullshit.

The majority of their fans are WHITE PEOPLE. These two idiots are cooning for their white audience.

Maybe one day you will realize this and stop stanning for those two self-hating idiots.

OK, let's stop acting like the NYDN is making Jay the scapegoat, b/c he is black. When John Galiano was accused of anti-Semitic remarks, there was immediate pressure on Natalie Portman to cut ties- b/c she was of JEWish descent. Just like if MACY's employee had been accused of homosexual remakes, any LGBT celeb associated w/ the company would be under the same pressure and scrutiny- if they, like Jay, had not spoke immediately when the story first broke. You shouldn't wait for a media outlet to put your ass on blast to speak out on something. You need to release a statement of some kind the moment Barneys was first accused. Sorry, but I don't buy his bullshit apology. I think he's trying to bind his time and find a way to proceed w/ the business venture. It's all about money with this clown. He could care less about to black kids being racially profiled, all he cares about are the connects that can be made w/ this business venture. I hope his actions are a serious wake up call to ALL minorities, that he doesn't give a damn about us, and just wants to expand his profile. Fuck him and his money.

My comment is for jay.
Why did u do a charity since like you said weeks ago your PRESENCE alone is CHARITY?

Anonymous said...

I love how some of the people posting here keep bringing up other political and social problems and asking why are we outraged about them.

We ARE outraged about all that, but this is an ENTERTAINMENT BLOG, last time I checked, and Jay Z is an entertainer.

Anyone with good sense knows that this is not the proper forum to be discussing serious political issues. Don't get mad at us because you don't have the guts to get out there and walk the walk in real life.

Back on topic, didn't Jay say his "presence was charity"? That's hilarious, given this weak attempt at a PR statement about this deal with Barneys.

I don't know when some of the blockheads posting on here will understand that problem is the hypocrisy of a black man who has sold out to his white corporate masters and is cosigning the exploitation of his black brothers and sisters to line his own pockets. This is far from the first time Jay has done this, and it won't be the last.

Anonymous said...

I don't like the man but I have to agree with him. Besides, if you're going to boycott Barney's, then be prepared to boycott all of the other high end stores in America. As black people, we KNOW how these white folks roll...don't go inside their stores then. Support your own black people-STOP the whining. Bitch who is 21yrs with a child and another on the way(working at home depot) should NOT be trying to buy a $2,500 bag.

Anonymous said...

@12:29

We can boycott 90% of the retail entities in this country if we want. I never have shopped at Barneys in the first place. I have more important things to do with my money than wasting it on expensive high end gear that will be out of style 6 months after purchase.

The point is that Jay Z is making a profit from this store who allows their employees to disrespect and discriminate against black people.

Instead of following Stevie Wonder's example, and saying "I DON'T SUPPORT RACISM", Jay has his PR people release this crap ass statement.

Jay couldn't even be bothered to cancel his concert in Florida after he pretended to support the JUSTICE FOR TRAYVON protests by grinning and cheesing in Trayvon's parents' faces for the benefit of the cameras. SHAMELESS!!

Just like Jay used the Obama campaign to get paid, and to get free press and more marketing for himself. How are you gonna say you support a candidate for president, and when you are asked what YOUR political views are, you say you don't believe in anything YOUR CANDIDATE is running on?

Jay Z actually did this in an interview-- dumb ass had no idea that he was parroting the Republican political spiel while claiming that he was an Obama supporter.

the irony is while they're profiling blacks, the whites are busy stealing and enjoying their goods for free, you can tell me barneys doesn't analyze their loss prevention each year. and like another poster said in the previous post about jay z, blacks are allowed to buy whatever they want. it doesn't matter if you live in the projects or own an apartment, if you saved money to buy your 2k purse or 300 dollar belt, then that's your prerogative. it's called live and let live, everybody lives above and beyond their means, blacks shouldn't be crucified for wanting nice things like everybody else, nobody questions the white kid who spends two thousand on an apple product, or 2k for rims on his car. it's called live and let live.

as for jay, it's funny when he needs to sell out one of his tired concerts, he uses black urban radio to harrass listeners over the airways to buy tickets, but when you ask jay to stand up for his fans, because the companies he associates with hate the very same skin color that are a part of his fan base, then it's a problem. jay has a social and ethical responsibility to show support for his own kind, because after all, it's nothing but hood, ghetto black dudes that stay on his nuts and over rate him, if not he would have faded to black already. black people need to stop supporting black celebrities that don't support them. if Jay won't break ties with Barney, fine, but make sure you and your money break ties with Jay z, the corporate slave. stand up for your rights, this white/black issue has been going on for thousands of years. god created this world for everybody, but a wicked group of establishment have made the human existence evil.

Anonymous said...

All this is as simple is just basic math. It's as simple as 2+2=4.

Jay no longer has to cater to his black fan base, because his white fan base is much larger, and has longer money.

He knows most black folk weren't checking for Barney's anyway, because we know how they roll in their stores.

Jay's "foundation" and this so-called partnership for charity is all about getting white $$$. He knows racist white people will happily spend even more money at Barneys and buy more of Jay's Xmas collection now that Pookie and Boomqueesha won't be there shopping alongside Cody and Becky.

Anonymous said...

no black person, ever, was named pookie and boomqueesha. you sound stupid exaggerating names. if Jay only needed a white fan base, then white rock stations would be playing his crappy music, he wouldn't need urban/black radio.

Don't get salty because you can't accept the fact that Jay only uses urban radio to hold on to his supposed "street cred".

Just look at the footage of his concerts, you will see a sea of white faces. Why do you think Gwyneth Paltrow felt ok taking her preteen kids to a Jay Z concert--- and she said she had taken them to more than one in multiple cities? Because most of the crowd was white.

Anonymous said...

What's so funny is everybody knows these white designers make their merchandise for their people to purchase and not for people of color. There has been many white designers who have already expressed that they hate to see any people of color wear their labels. Every time someone buys their merchandise that money goes back to their community, not ours. There is no such thing as bad schools in their area and they have their very own Doctors, Police, Stores, top Grocery stores, etc,... Your $2,500 dollar bags and other expensive items help their Soccer programs, schools, police departments, and other programs that your kind aren't privy to. Not to mention being able to pay for all that racist type of profiling security that you receive when your kind steps foot into one of their establishments. If these people really cared about your dollar, then why don't they open a store in the hood, a place where you can find many people wearing their labels?
If Jay is to receive any monies from this deal with Barney's, he too will bring his money right back to the community where he lives, where it will benefit his environment and not in the hood where I can almost guarantee some fool will be wearing his labels.

you clearly can't distinguish between nick names and government names, you said some black girl out there meaning, you don't, have never, and quite frankly will never meet a black girl named boomquesha, again you sound silly. and the black boys you do miraculously know called pot, pookie or whatever have legal names. the point is, stop feeding into stereotypes or too many Martin episodes as to how black people and black culture really is, i'd rather nickname my son pookie than Apple, Billie bob or Betty sue for a girl, any day. In conclusion, you associated black names in a negative light because you've been brainwashed that everything black is wrong.
