Still Broke with Expensive Taste

The sales numbers are in for Azealia Banks long-awaited debut album, 'Broke with Expensive Taste' and looks like your girl is still broke…

Teyanna Taylor, who also debuted last week, didn't fare much better.

HA! that's what she gets for her nasty attitude and twitter beefs.

Money depends on if she's independent.

No one knows these women. They need to hire folks that will put them out there. I only hear about Azealia and Teyana through blogs.

Honestly, that's about 10,000 more copies than I what initially thought she'd sell if BWET were ever released this century. Even though I'm not feeling her music, I still think she's far better than Iggy, and should have the relative commercial success and exposure that she is. But, her nasty attitude, Twitter beefs, and the fact that being a Black female in the rap game isn't as much of an "exotic novelty" as a White girl with a fake ass and an Australian accent, and also, the token Black female rapper spot is currently taken by Nicki Minaj, she's not going to go but so far in the mainstream industry. Supposedly, she tours a lot overseas, and managed to make a million from that in spite of not having any major label support, so maybe that should be her bread and butter.

the debut took too long for both of these young women. also neither are extremely talented. while i like that azaelia speaks up for black women in the music industry, she's just okay to me. the good female rappers are pretty much still underground. i like rhapsody.

Azaelia's album is AMAZING! Probably the best this year--easily!

She was doing the absolute most without having an album out. THIS was the time for her to make some noise. Not to mention she kept showing up late for shows and picking with people. What fans she had probably bounced. She was feeling herself too soon!

That's all women do in the industry is show their ass and titties.

It doesn't have anything to do with her "attitude". I haven't heard a single song by her until I decided to listen to this album because I'm always here to support girls/women that look like her since most of us definitely don't. I was presently surprised. Not only was it different, but she has skills. She would be a lot further than she is if she looked "other". There are so many entertainers with bad behavior and bad attitudes that are sitting on top right now, men and women, and they've done things way more terrible than Azealia, so save that excuse.

Well it was only available on iTunes and that's with only a couple days of sales soooo....

OMG!!! Whoever said that they do not have talent is just a plain ole hater!!!! Because I did purchase neither but I heard both (I will buy this weekend), Both of the pieces of work are pretty damn good. Especially Teyana's album is on some R&B GROWN WOMAN SHIT. You need to go check it out before critiquing their work. Because it sounds like you all are doing it based from reading BLOGS all damn day. If you listened you might have something positive to say!

10:49 and 11:10 are dead on. Not enough exposure, not enough image control. Azealia IS talented and creative but she doesn't have the big names and mega bucks behind her. The dumb commenter that said her attitude was responsible... really? So the people who make it in the music business are humble, down to earth, sweethearts? Really? Lol. Some people need to think before they post. Instead of a captcha, snitch needs to require an IQ test, I swear.

It's too bad that she alienated so many potential fans with her various twitter beefs. Because BWET actually goes off. If she could stop arguing with every damn body she could easily take over the rap game. Idk about y'all but I'm sick of every song on the radio tryna give me a complex because I don't have diamond-encrusted tennis shoes & audio blackface *coughIggyAzealiacough*.

Maybe she doesn't do favors for the right ppl. you know how it goes. Are albums selling anyway? Get your tour & endorsment money girl.

She will continue to flop until she gets a record deal with a major label. being an independent artist is nowheresville. if she got with the right label she could at least find singles success!

This girl is dope!.
Off topic.. To that poster that asked about any current artist that have good music out..Jazmin Sullivan
And idk if I'm late on this one but saw Mint Condition Unsung and it was good.. saw Troop's about a month ago it was good too..just saying

Cosign 11:17. With the way music sounds today I don't purchase albums however, I did pre-order Ms.Taylor album on itunes and I am pleased. Kanye helped her get that old R&B feel back. I can play the entire album without skipping, which is extremely rare. And everyone knows that people don't really buy albums anymore and the good artists are never promoted accordingly. Good job to both ladies.

she should have promoted the best song- had radio play and media interviews.....not the blogs either...I mean REAL interviews,

iggy took alopecia's spot as the female rapper to replace nicki. she coulda capitalized off '212' in a big way but she blew whatever chances she had. say what you want bout iggy but she didn't let her ego get in the way of her come-up. alopecia got big-headed too soon and fucked up her shot at mainstream success. attitude DOES count when you on the way up. at least wait until you get some hit singles at least before acting arrogant.

Bought this ALBUM. Love: Idle Delilah, Desperado, 212, Heavy Metal and Reflective so far. Those three have been on rotation, haven't listened to the rest yet.

Well done Ms. Azealia Banks!!

She's actually a very talented rapper, I was listening to a rap of her's the other day on Youtube, a video where she was rapping in the ear of some yt dude, the song was pretty good, I guess she spends too much time engaging in cyber beefs instead of focusing on her "art". she's a very talented young woman and really should just focus on her stuff and leave all that other bullshit alone.

When did the commenters on here become so evil? It's becoming common to run across comments rejoicing in someone else's misfortune. How sad and miserable some of you are!

I bought the album and its very good and creative. She is not copying anyone else's sound. For Azealia to do this on her own and get to #30 is amazing. Imagine if she had a real label behind her. Most of the commenters don't even have the $10 to buy the CD!

Anonymous said...

@11:03, 11:17, and 11:10 that album is amazing. Anyone who says that she doesn't bring anything to the table hasn't listened to her music. It's interesting people actually call the garbage Beyonce churns out music.

LMMFAO!

Both of them ghetto, hard faced booger wolves are ZERO ASS LAMES. HAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAA! At least Teyana has landed a baller or two because she honestly has NO career. Azalea's baldheaded low buget ass just needs to go back to working her part time job at Family Dollar and call it a day! GIVE IT UP.

Anonymous said...

Hmmmm....all these broads do is instagram and twitter bang. That's it. The fact they have any music out is odd to me and I am not surprised both of their joints didn't even go wood. Them shits is particle board. #nevertoreachplatinumstatusever

Anonymous said...

But she released the album independently. That's more hard work and money per album than most of our faves. Good for her.

Anonymous said...

It seems they both have Champagne taste but Beer money! LMAO at that.

@ 10:51am the world is a big place so you're comment was very on point. Her album sales are no way a reflection on how much money she can make worldwide off of her brand. So all the other comments made regarding other wise my suggestion is look into marketing and branding before making those

In the words, of Kanye West
"Hater niggas marry hater bitches and have hater kids.."

@1:06
NEVER tell anybody to give up on their dreams.

Even if Azaelia is not making millions, I'm sure her job fulfills her on a personal level, which is probably more than most people can say. There are too many people clogging up the music scene for the love of money and fame anyway when it's really about art and innovation.

Anonymous said...

1:57, what dreams? This bitch (I think someone called her Alopecia, LMMFAO) CLEARLY ain't thinking about her "dreams". ALL she stay doing is beefing with folks just to get some relevancy. beefing and beggin for people to do a track with her or to release her from her STANDARD bullshit record deal. Go-gettas make their dreams come true, not constantly bitch and moan and having delusions of persecution!!!

Anonymous said...

Well isn't that how it works with the industry? I guess she hasn't choosen to join the rest of them, it's not all glitz and glamor, once she's a full blown throt she'll come up.

Anonymous said...

"looks like your girl is still broke…" LOL!

I don't know who this is, but that intro paragraph struck my interest, so....
Is that a spoof album cover? If not, ugh!
I stay confused by female artists who more than likely have a female or gay male or teenage fan base using vulgar s*x selling images in their promotions. If your fan base isn't nasty straight males or lesbians WHY!!!!! are you flashing T&A? Why would you think that's something that would attract an audience to your MUSIC. If you're a female wouldn't looking "fierce" be more appealing to a gay male and female fan base. A look your fans can copy? Don't female and gay male fans like copying make-up and clothes and heels?
When was the last time T&A was a successful selling tool for black musicians not crossing over into POP????
Ciara, Tierra Marie, Trina, Lola Monroa (LOL), etc. T&A promotions work for getting athletes attention, passed around industry hotels, some naughty magazine covers, maybe a movie. It gets them some shine on a THOT level, they make money and get flown in but when has it ever helped sell albums and make charts and be a real winner in rap or rnb MUSIC?
It's like these musicians aren't really passionate about the music, they're passionate about being successful and awarded as s*x symbols...music is just an excuse to get in the s*x selling door. Record labels wasting effort on girls who don't really mean it. SMH

Anonymous said...

@ 5:28 pretty much. they don't really care about the music it really is playing second fiddle to their true desire make money by any means necessary (selling out) and being a celebrity. there aren't artists anymore just celebrities/spending their time perfecting a great pose on instagram but not promoting their music.

Anonymous said...

This reminds me I need to grab Bank's Album. It's about time another black female rapper got into the game. And yes, she's very talented. Anyone who says otherwise is honestly just a hater or very ignorant of what good music is.

Anonymous said...

I always buy albums; I didn't buy hers, but I always buy albums

Anonymous said...

@5:56 pm she is not just "getting into the game." She's been out for a while and has several mix tapes that are better than most artists' studio albums. Her Fantasea mix tape is superb.

Anonymous said...

LOL, there is one big problem with the numbers, they don't reflect the total of the revenue artist are earning. STREAMING is what will determine success and sales. Downloading....WHO BUYS CDs??? is over! The Charts have not caught up with the market change.

Anonymous said...

I haven't called an entertainer an "artist" in a long time. Azealia is an artist. You can hear the passion in her raps and this girl has impeccable wordplay. Every song thus far I've heard from her, I've liked. Listen to her old and new stuff; she is not bad. I hate that our women don't get the recognition they deserve. We have to support our girls Azealia, Teyana, Jazmin, Chrisette M. You better believe whites are pushing Iggy's mediocre ass and literally shoving Kims' ass in our faces. She'll be alright, though. Money comes from TOURS/PRIVATE EVENTS anyway.

Chic Noir said...

Her album is the best I've heard in a very long time. I really love it and am proud to see a Black girl do well.

Y'all need to at least listen to the album OMG. It is fire.

Chic Noir said...

For the record, I'm sick of the overly sexualized images of Black women in the media. I wish we would make a return to glamour.

people do not buy albums anymore!

this means nothing

Anonymous said...

The sad part is Teyana has a million followers on Instagram, Azalia has at least quarter million yet the sales don't reflect that. So no true fan base just a bunch of nosy mofos
