Toni Braxton Blames Family for Stunted Career

In a sit down with Iyanla Vanzant for the season finale of Braxton Family Values Toni Braxton admits she feels held back by her family and believes she would be much further along in her career if it weren't for them....

Toni talks about how the family was upset with her because producers LA Reid and Babyface only wanted to sign her and that she was pressured to put her family on and felt like she could never live her life.

Yes. Her entire family rode on her coattails. I wouldn't have wanted to sign them either. Leeches. Tamar disgusts me amd she would have nothing if it weren't for Toni.

Toni's career was red HOT until she dropped that FOURTH album then it all went downhill from there. The music was good but her label chose an awful lead single. It didnt help that Toni was pregnant either.......

Toni put the blame on where it belongs: Beyonce
That light-skinded heffer ruined black female vocalists. When the Satanists' propped up Beyonce in the late 90's they successfully killed off all the competition. If it were not for Beyonce black female vocalists would still be thriving and alive on the charts. TPTB allowed Beyonce to rule the 00's and still trying to prop her up in the 10's. The only way black female vocalists will shine again is when Beyonce is put out to pasture.

Toni can only blame herself. She should have told them no. They were jealous and were willing to pull her down because they couldn't get to her level. Pity.

@ 10:46 - they have psych meds to help with your delusions child.

To me it just seems like she gave up like dee said after that flop fourth album.

When all else fails in someone career or life, blame somebody else. Yeah that's the way to go *sarcasm off*

It was both. The flopped album and emergence of Beyonce being all over the place. At one point all R&B music was coming from Beyonce and if not Beyonce it was coming Pop-ish R&B from the likes of Destinys Child/Beyonce. A Quick search from google shows it. It was Usher, it was Alicia Keys, Destinys Child.

dee clem said...

What the hell was popish about Alicia Keys music??? She is one of the few Rnb artists who never left her Rnb roots. THE TRUTH about the decline of Rnb is that YALL dont buy the music. We could have Rnb stars doing big numbers if yall would BUY the music. Yall spent 12 dollars on one Black Panther ticket but wont spend 1.25 on a Jazmine Sullivan or Marsha Ambrosius song........

@12:12 that's a lie before Jesus. Every black person I knew had CD Towers in their home with racks and racks of music. Black people bought plenty of music and there was a wide array of artists to support. That's why the 90's era of music was so satisfying because there was a huge variety of artists to enjoy. Many of our favorite black female vocalists, groups and female rappers didn't fit a particular appearance or sound mold. After Beyonce was touted as the end all be all nobody was promoted if they weren't her clone.

Music now is about commercial success, crossover appeal and cookie cutter appearances. That's when you get the stamp of approval from the powers that be.

Nicky Minaj is a clone of Lil Kim (only one popular female rapper of the 90's), TPTB loved the hypersexualized coon image and approved it, propped her up for 10 years, and now the only female rappers that will be popular are all some type of knock off of Nicky. Even the old Lauren Hill wouldn't stand a chance in today's climate.

You got to remember we used to have Mega Stars like MJ but other entertainers were still promoted even if they didn't do his numbers or had his draw. Now the standard is EVERYBODY has to be a mega star to get backing. The field has narrowed tremendously and that's not because we don't have the talent or don't buy albums. Not every artist is going to go platinum but that is the standard set by jews who own black music.

@dee

If Marsha or JAsmine put some hits then I’ll buy it. Fact is Floetry music > Marsha’s music. Jasmine’s music is meh.

dee clem said...

Why are you bringing up the 90's???? I thought I made it clear I was referring to present day. Of course Black people bought CD'S in the 90s. There was no Youtube. How else were they gonna hear the music??? BUT NOW Black people have become lazy and cheap. BUYING MUSIC doesnt excite them anymore since you can get it for free. But yes lets place blame somewhere it shouldnt be.....

dee clem said...

Marsha and Jazmine make very good music. Yall dont support Melanie Fiona Lalah Hathaway Ledisi or even Jill Scott anymore. They make good music, you have just gotten used to listening to trash.

Her career stalled because of the rise of Beyonce which was in the 90's. What they play on the radio, which is their commercial artists, is a direct reflection of who's on the charts and who they want to impose. It's the same 5 people on the charts.

dee clem said...

They play what people buy. YALL DONT BUY THE MUSIC. If you bought the music they would play it. What part of that dont you understand??? Toni is that you? Didnt you say on Behind The Music that you never should have LEFT Laface to go to Blackground Records where Aaliyah's uncle refused to spend money promoting your album???? How is that Beyonce's fault???

Beyonce killed the music industry with all her orchestrated cyber bullying bullshit and i'll believe that forever. I watched her do it. She put up instructions to the "beyhive" On exactly how to harass and stalk people online if they don't worship her and only her, and they put them into categories like "worker bee" "honey bee" "killer bee" and the rabid insects in her FORUM took that and ran BEYOND!

There was also this site called "Beyonceitis" where they would talk a gang of shit and celebrate beyonce "ruining" female artist careers, like ashanti, aaliyah, mariah, janet, britney, madonna, TONI, etc... and I have a gut feeling that it was one of her relatives running that site, so sweetie my answer will forever be FUCK THE FLEAHIVE!!!

dee clem said...

Yes Beyonce brainwashed your fans to stop buying your music. Sure Toni. Take your meds sis. Tell Birdman I said heeey boo

Some of y'all are disgustingly gullible and need a reality check. The music industry has changed when alot of labels were consolidated into just a universal or Atlantic, to name a few. Its why we don't have a plethora of singers or rappers that were females after the mid 2000s like we did in the last 3+ decades. Yes, people favored Beyonce mainly because of image and some good joints she had. So, yes they pushed her more and allowed her to steal and blackball from other artists who she is threatened by. This includes some of the girls aforementioned @2:10 including Amerie. That is why she does and says nothing when her Fleahive attack other artists. She encourages ebullying because it makes her feel powerful as said "Queen". Now that Bey is at her peak, the other girls are slowly coming out and doing new music. And if you don't believe this, Toni did a rendition of 2pac's " Me and my Girl friend" before J and Bey did theirs. Just to show you that the politics is why we are given what or who we are given not because people not purchasing their music. Another example, Drizzy had a platinum album out and she wasn't even nominated at BET yet they give Onika 100 BET awards when other girls were grinding such as much yet not promoted like her. Signing off. The fact is sometimes stranger then fiction.

I completely agree with the comments that say Beyonce caused the decline of black female artists. She had the help of her shady manager father, Jay Z, and payola from her record label to help her shut down other black female artists. Beyonce also stole ideas from other female artists as a tactic for people to compare her to them so that she could be declared much better than her competition.

The music industry allowed her to sabotage other black women, because it's racist as hell. They only want one black woman to thrive in music at a time, while it can be several white singers that can be allowed to be successful and create generational wealth. Beyonce didn't give a shit that other black female singers were being sabotaged as long as she got her piece of the pie. Rihanna was the only black woman that was able to slip through because she had LA Reid by her side and since Jay Z signed her it was okay for her to thrive because she made Jay Z and Beyonce richer. Also don't forget her and Jay Z got caught inflating her streaming numbers on Tidal. She has had so many tools to help her be the so called queen bee of the industry.

Nicki Minaj has sabotaged black female rappers in the same way. I'm glad female rappers have spoken up about how she's sabotaged them. I wish black female singerss had spoken up about Beyonce but now it's too late. They will be called a hater and harassed by the Beyhive. The Breakfast Club tried to get Amerie to open up about how Beyonce copied her style, which essentially ruined her career. They are industry insiders and they knew what had happened, but Amerie changed the subject like she was scared. Sadly, Beyonce will continue to dominate unfairly until she's ready to retire. By that time, she will probably prepare Blue Ivy to follow in her foot steps. The reign of Beyonce may never truly be over if that happens. That's a frightening thought. Music has already suffered enough favortism to her.

She should not have divorced Kerry.

How can Bey stop yall from BUYING music? Ummm what?

I REALLY BELIEVE ALL OF THAT..TONI COULD HAVE BEEN WHERE BEY IS AT OR NEAR TO THE POINT THAT HER CAREER WOULD'VE SOARED...U KNOW SOMETIMES U DO HAVE TO TELL YOUR FAMILY NO.NO..WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS..THEY HAVE TO LEARN HOW TO FLY ON THEIR OWN.

If Beyonce is so powerful why does she only have 5 #1 singles?? HOW SWAY?

Anonymous said...

I say her marketing was to blame. Long before Destiny's Child was even relevant, Toni posing on the cover of Vibe magazine naked contradicted the classy image she'd portrayed previously. If it were some artsy or periodical respected by the masses, or if she wanted to limit her audience to young urbanites, it would be different.

Also, I would've not spoken publicly about finances. While the first time did expose LaFace (and possibly Pebbles) for shadiness, this could've been settled without media attention. Though not a fan of Bey's, sometimes a person has to accept that not everyone is made for superstardom. Few people can keep up with the times and even some major names have had contract or money issues go wrong.

Umm, some of you folks have amnesia, Beyonce used to be kinda thick with a round ass and used to wear light brown hair with highlights. Her daddy forced every member out of the group and only kept the ones that drew no attention away from beyonce. from there that ass got smaller (she became obsessed with thigh gaps, a white woman fixation), got that nose job and her hair got blonder. U can't catch this bitch not looking like a white woman. she doesn't even consider herself black. she plays up her non-blackness every chance she gets. this is for her crossover appeal and commercial dominance. so the current queen of popular black music doesn't even self-identify as BLACK even though her daddy darker than charcoal.

did ya'll forget that on beyonce's ascent that ANYBODY who was hot she would immediately duet with?? anybody that was hot she collabed with, anybody that was competition she smothered them. that bitch was everywhere doing everything. it used to be artists took breaks between albums, NOT BEYONCE! her and her daddy goal was domination. she wouldn't stop touring she wouldn't take any breaks, she was everywhere. she took the oxygen out the room for other artists. she became the STANDARD. so if you wasn't light skinned, booty shaking in a onesie and touring like a slave you you didn't make it, you weren't star material, you didn't get the blessing from the money hungry record labels.

sorry but beyonce ushered in the era of decline for variety in black female artistry...and she ain't even black let her tell it.

beyonce is NOT the most talented artist to emerge from the 90's...she's the one that TPTB supported (for her detrimental image that she sold...spot light hoarding will do anything for a buck). ffs beyonce couldn't even TALK PROPERLY but she was the chosen one and all the other females careers peaked after she was anointed.

4:19 Baaabbyy!! Amerie knew who they really are and she was too intelligent to fall for the bait. But I'm glad that she found peace throughout the drama as she lived her dreams performing in Asian countries, promoted reading, married with a new born. She's doing good.

The breakfast club and the whole entertainment industry work in cahoots with one another to promote division against women and other groups of people. Giving certain people donkey of the day but never give Jay nor Bey. Not to say some don't deserve it but not giving these two it. They have an agenda to uphold. Its up to y'all to stay sleep or get woke.

@4:19 "The music industry allowed her to sabotage other black women, because it's racist as hell"

Once again this supports my comment of promoting division. They dont love her they just love the hatred she spew to other women of color to mask their own hatred towards blacks and other people of color.

I am @3:26 and I mentioned her peaking. Now that the public is starting to get tired of her and her hubby, they are practicing atonement. Out of nowhere she wants to reconcile with her ex-band mates to make her look good again to the public. Reason being: Tidal is plummeting. The SEC and the police are now doing Investigation on her due to her constantly abusing the system ie payola, strong arming staff to present awards to her, to name a few. Boy, I only wish lurker was here.

I agree on Beyonce ruining everything and out on a high pedestal to be the only R&B female singer worth listening to. I believe alot of Singers were either taken out or knocked down so Beyonce can be the only one. You got muthafuckas saying She's greater than Michael Jackson. Bigger than Aretha Franklin. Same goes for Jay Z. I believe that nigga was put up to be the top rapper of all time. They had to get rid of Biggie to do it. Meanwhile the artists thats really talented are stuck on YouTube.

I have always supported the artists I like both on spotify, itunes and any other mp3 download site. The problem is that music has had change. Before it was the trend was about thug rap/dance hip-hop/r&b. Now the trend is about soundcloud mumble rappers and autotune. Its the same group of people as always. It used to be you could learn about newer artists as they came out but they newer artists have to fight long and hard and do different things to get shine. Take for example K. Michelle. She has a wonderful voice and I think she is an excellent singer. I HAVE purchased her music, however, she needs reality shows and a combination of social media to get mainstream exposure, YET, radio stations will keep playing same top 40, Selena, Taylor Swift, Beyonce etc, etc, unless YOU follow a specific artists career you wont know what music they are up to and what projects they have. Its unto the consumer to look for new artists. You can't blame family for a stunted career growth. Music tastes change both in society and with the consumer. Toni and her family however, have a reality show, she needs to TAKE this and turn this opportunity into other streams. Its not that she isn't talented and cant make music, its that music tastes have changed. Its not the same anymore.

The same anon commented at least 8 times in this thread. We get it. You hate Beyonce. Move on babe.

Anonymous said...

I don't hate Beyonce but this is the truth. Too bad we were too young to see it when it was happening.

Anonymous said...

Don't blame this on Beyonce because it's been happening a long time.

The same thing happened with Diana Ross. Martha Reeves could out sing EVERY female singer at Motown, with the possible exception of Gladys Knight who was Motown for a hot minute. Gordy pushed Ross instead of Reeves because of his love for Ross and his need for White acceptance. I think this is the main reason Aretha never signed with Motown. She knew the game Berry was playing and wanted no parts of it.

Same thing also happened with Lena Horne and Dorothy Dandridge. I admire both women, but truth be told, they couldn't stand in the same room with Ruby Dee and Cicely Tyson. Dee and Tyson did okay in Hollywood, but they would have been much more successful had Hollywood invested in them the way they did Horne and Dandridge. And there are more examples ...

So don't blame this fuckery on Beyonce. Just like Ross, Horne, and Dandridge, Beyonce is a victim of the divisive games White people love to play.
