Tyler Perry Rescues GA Couple Held Hostage in Mexico

Movie mogul Tyler Perry rescues an American couple from Sandy Springs, GA being held hostage in Mexico after they couldn't pay their medical bill...

The ordeal began after Stephen Johnson went into diabetic shock aboard a Carnival Cruise and was taken to the infirmary where he stayed until they reached the port of Mexico where he was rushed to the hospital and stayed in ICU for the next 3 days. At the end of his stay Stephen and his fiancée were physically prevented from leaving the hospital until they paid $14,000.00 in cash. The hospital also stopped treating Stephen and took his call button.

That's when Tyler Perry stepped in. After hearing the story on the news, Tyler Perry called the couple and told them he is bringing them home.

Since Tyler Perry's call, the doctors have said Johnson is not well enough to fly and will be released after the weekend is over.

The hospital bill has since crept up to $16,000.00.

That was a good deed on the part of Mr. Tyler helping out his fellow nubians. With that out the way here comes the shade, you mean to tell me his ass on vacation with no damn health insurance, diabetes has a whole range of symptoms before yo ass kneel over, extreme thirst, dizziness, dry itchy skin, blurred vision, extreme hunger and a host of other symptoms. I'm going to need our black men to start paying better attention to their health, too often symptoms are ignored till a crisis ensue, ain't no damn way his black ass ain't been having symptoms long before he took his black ass on vacation, when was the last time this fool had a checkup? my mother has diabetes and I remember when she started having symptoms, on account of her unhealthy ass eating and took her black ass to the Dr, who diagnosed her with diabetes. While they were rescued by Mr. Perry charity and generosity, I'm going to need this couple to get their priorities in order. I just can't with some of my people, when going on vacation make sure your health insurance is up to date, purchase travel insurance and check out the insurance of the country you are visiting just in case anything happen to yo ass ova there. Mr. Johnson need to get his shit all the way in order.

That's crazy. I can't imagine being held hostage over a medical bill. Good luck to this couple. I wonder why the State Department didn't act faster. Sounds like they only intervened once this story made the news.

I totally agree with you Niya. Black folks should think about their health but how many really want to or can afford to do that? A lot of our people seem to live in the moment instead of planning for the future. Most of the low income Black folks I know save all year to go on vacation or wait for that tax refund check but don't have any kind of basic life insurance to speak of -- life, medical or even car. So I doubt travel insurance is even on their radar.

As for TP, I ain't mad that he continues to generously sprinkle his goodwill onto his fellow Georgia natives but I can't help but think all his altruism isn't without motive. I feel like his public displays of assistance are a build up to something else; perhaps a foray into politics? I dunno but something about him always gets my Spidey senses tingling.

R in NYC says:

This is what burns my butter. So many Mexican women cross the border and give birth in an American hospital. American taxpayers end up footing the bill. We don't hold the mothers and their babies hostage until the bill is paid.

@ms mac
Tyler has always gotten the *side eye* from me, something about him and his movies with the overly religious themes, which is hypocritical as he is not who he portrays himself to be. I can't get with the overly religious god themes when these Atlantiens in that circle for the most part, lead the most debauchery of lives and hid behind that religious shit. He has always been shady and have a hidden agenda behind his motives. While it's nice what he did, I have always seen shadiness about him.

I'm not feeling the public display of altruism. It's one thing when the people mention what he has done but he's always taking about who he helps. He needs to be more humble than that. Otherwise his ass has help them couple come home whereas Drumpf helped a nigga rapper, ASAP Rocky, come home. Should have left Rocky's black ass in jail.

No this story needed to be heard so that you Americans know what these Mexicans are about. You there rallying for them to let their people walk up and have more rights and privileges than you, you take them into your bosom (talmbout "you almost like us, you can say nigga"), and they would still turn around and side with Donald Trump and be racist towards you in your own natural born country.
Good on Tyler Perry for helping these people, and good that he is famous so the story got out.

American insurance companies are notorious for not paying medical expenses incurred in foreign countries. This same thing happened to a former coroner's husband. Most foreign hospitals want cash...

But I read on a different website that his fiance was trying to offer the Hospital $7000 cash money and make payment arrangements... Sooo you and your man out here flossing on Cruise ships, with a pocket full of money and NO Health Insurance... Sounds like PRIORITIES are NOT IN ORDER... SMH

Hey Just an FYI check your own health plans. Your coverage outside of the country, especially if you have a PPO might be minimal. Even if you have no insurance travel insurance is dirt cheap. insure my trip dot com has great policies.
