The REAL Reason Shonda Rhimes Left ABC

Two years ago TV producer Shonda Rhimes left ABC for Netflix after creating several long running hit shows including Grey's Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder [click here if you missed that].

Now we know why...

Apparently ABC's parent company Disney insulted Rhimes when she asked for extra Disneyland tickets for her sister.

From The Hollywood Reporter

As part of her ABC relationship, Rhimes had been given an all-inclusive pass to Disneyland — and without a partner, she'd negotiated a second for her nanny. But on this day, she needed one for her sister, too, as she'd be taking Rhimes' teenage daughter while the nanny chaperoned her younger two. If the passes had been interchangeable, Rhimes would have been happy to give up hers — when would she have time to go to Disneyland anyway?
After some unwanted back-and-forth — "We never do this," she was told more than once — Rhimes was issued an additional pass. But when her daughters arrived in Anaheim, only one of the passes worked. Rhimes lobbed a call to a high-ranking executive at the company. Surely, he would get this sorted.
Instead, the exec allegedly replied, "Don't you have enough?"
Rhimes was beside herself. She thanked him for his time, then hung up and called her lawyer: Figure out a way to get her over to Netflix, or she'd find new representatives.

I’m so glad she left ABC. I can’t stand network television. Of all media outlets, network TV is the worst for Black people. Even BET is better than network stations. I will support her on Netflix till she gives me reason not to.

Insulted for not getting a free Disney ticket? Entitlement at it's finest.

Isn't Netflix being sued by Monique for racial and gender discrimination? Isn't that reason enough?

Shonda is a multi-millionaire so I know she could afford to get her family into Disney without needing to be comped. I'm not buying that one of the most prominent black female executives in Hollywood got mad over some Disney tickets. So either this story is pure BS, a smear campaign to make her seem petty or it happened and she used the situation as an excuse to move on from ABC.

Entitlement my foot. It's the principal behind their shady comment. Rimes made millions for that company! The LEAST they could do is foot a small courtesy after years of a mutually financially prosperous business "relationship". Services and gifts are comped all the time! Would they tell a differently hued mogul "Don't you have enough?"..They wouldn't dare! It's just a Disney ticket...EXACTLY the point.

While some look at it as "entitlement" or petty... Its the principle of the matter... ABC is a network she's carried for years... I'm sure it was no issue at all to get her an extra pass... And seeing as though as it was a reasonable request (1 extra all access pass) and nothing insane, they couldve made shit shake and not given her the back and forth.

End the end, they'd make it happen for one of their own so why not her...

I have to choose my battles. I have Mo's back and Shonda's, but Shonda wins this round.

I hate Disney and ABC way more than Netflix. I have gotten more from Netflix in 1 year than I got from ABC and Disney in all their years combined.

Absolute bullshit. This story is planted and utter garbage. Smear campaign for what? No one asked and no one cares.

I'll wait to see if Shonda responds to this. If she called Oprah about this I dont think she would have told her to leave. This is petty and I would have just paid for the ticket and dealt with them on another level when it came to coins for the next season. ABC has very little content that I view on a regular.

Shonda made ABC $2 billion. What other series of shows was as big as Shondaland? And she had to beg for a $154 pass and be told "Don't you have enough?"?? GTFOH. She left on GP and I don't blame her

Some of Yall talkin a lot of Shit right now. If she were caucasian they would've been excited to assist her with the matter. I'm sure there were some other issues. That last drop of disrespect must've been the last straw. She made em Rich and they gave her their ass to kiss.

Who is the idiot that denied Shonda her pass? She made Disney billions and billions of dollars in my Donald Trump voice.

It's the principle? Don't nobody owe her no dam Disney pass. She got paid to do a job and if she wanted all access to Disney properties she should have put that in her contract. People really be doing the most over dumb shat.

It has to be about more than Disney tickets. No one is that full of themselves.

And THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is how it's done. Take your skills and go elsewhere.

I think my issue with this story is that Shonda had "expectations" on how she "should" be treated, verses the reality of the situation.

Unless Disney was contractually obligated to provide amusement park tickets that can be interchangeable (depending on who wanted to go), I don't understand how Disney was wrong. The tickets were comped as a gift, right? Not that it was written into an agreement that she's entitled to x, y, & z because she brought in billions of dollars. You see this is my issue. Shonda made billions of dollars for the network, which is why she shouldn't have even picked up the phone when she couldn't get her tickets comped. Instead she should have renegotiated her contract or just left. But the fact that there's this story floating out there - about what she felt entitled to (which is irrelevant - because contractually she wasnt technically entitled, otherwise why not just sue their asses for breach of contract and move on? ) - a disney amusement park pass for her sister - cloaked in this "straw that broke the camel's back", during a global pandemic just doesn't sit well with me.

Black women have a hard enough time as it is being taken seriously in corporate environments. I mean, I understand where and why Shonda feel "entitled" but this type of narrative surrounding a black show runner isn't good for her image. If you wanted to leave the network - for creative differences etc - then that should have been the only narrative in the media. The fact that you needed to tell the whole story about a yt executive stating "don't you have enough?!" Is cringe worthy in itself because the executive is right! Now had she had a legal standing, she could've had her lawyers address this bullshit and what couldn't be worked out could have ended amicably and she would probably still have a bridge with ABC. But in typical black women fashion, she has to set the entire bridge on fire with a few explosives just to show how "skrong" she is smh.

Being professional and making sure your rights are clarified in legal form is how you handle corporate thugs like Disney. They don't give a fck about what you feel entitled to. If the legal papers don't say it, then it doesn't exist. All this negative exposure on disney is gonna hurt her more than it does them. Take your grievances to legal and stick them mfers for their paper!

We don't know if this true or not. I think its more about the glass ceiling. The opportunity for more creative control and money is a reason to leave ABC. Ticket gifting is not a reason to leave a network.
